DirecTV to cut ties with 'Passions'

NBC soap may find another suitor in '08

By JOSEF ADALIAN

DirecTV has lost its passion for "Passions" -- but the NBC U-produced sudser isn't quite dead yet.

Satcaster has told NBC it won't be ordering a second season of the soap, which moved to DirecTV in September as part of a $40 million deal designed to bring more original programming to the service (Daily Variety, Apr. 25). NBC canceled the show earlier this year.

In order to keep "Passions" on DirecTV through August, satcaster has ordered 52 additional episodes of the show from the Peacock's Universal Media Studios. However, starting in early to mid-January, skein will begin airing just three times a week (compared with four weekly airings now).

"Passions" will go on an extended holiday hiatus next week, then return in February for another month of filming. Show will wrap production in March, and as of now, there are no firm plans for it to continue.

However, with UMS having reduced the budget on the show significantly, there's talk that "Passions" might yet find another life elsewhere. Newly acquired cabler Oxygen might make a good fit. Peacock also could turn the skein into an Internet-based sudser.

DirecTV and UMS declined comment.

I'm not joining a board just to read a post, lol.

Passions has been getting ratings equal to that of when they were on NBC. If they are canceled then too bad. However, I don't know how much I believe this....is that even an "official" board? Or is it a fan board?

I'm hearing Tracey Ross told the webmaster of a board to say this. I don't know how true it is, but why would an actress on the show do something like this?

DirectTV would be stupid to cancel Passions now, especially since its doing almost as well for them as it did for NBC. However, nothing surprises me in this day and age. With the strike on, DirectTV maybe doesn't want to help pay for scabs, even though some of the Passions writers have gone FiCore.

Ron, I agree with you. The few good actors on the show, like Andrea Evans, Liza Huber, Lindsay Hartley, John Reilly & Tracey Ross , hopefully will get good jobs on other soaps. I hope Andrea will now return to ONE LIFE as Tina. Lindsay probably would make a good Adriana on ONE LIFE. John Reilly could return to GH as Sean Donely, but I doubt it. Liza Huber would be good on ATWT, or maybe on ONE LIFE as Kelly or AMC as Greenlee.

LOL, this is so funny. My mom was telling me today, that the teacher she works for husband worked did lighting on a soap. She said he lost his job not to long ago when the soap got cancelled and that he got it back when DirectTV picked it up. And then she said last week, the woman was complaining becuase her husband lost his job again. Of course my mom didn't know the name of the show, but what other soap got canclled and picked up by DirectTV this year? LOL

So, if my mom is write about what her boss told her, I'd say this is true and that DirectTV cancelled Passions. I'll have her ask the teacher on Monday.

Passions might have gotten decent ratings, but did those ratings generate enough cash to cover the show's budget? Despite the fact that the budget was slashed post-NBC, it still had a sizeable cast. The ratings, as decent as they might've been on DirecTV, just might not have been enough to cover those costs.

I didn't figure it would last long on DirecTV, anyway. Shows that air on cable, no matter how good they are, just never have the longevity that daytime soaps have had on the regular networks, no matter how good they are.

It also goes to show that the show should've simply ended on NBC, so that all fans of the show could've been given a real finale and payoff, rather than allowing it to continue on mercilessly and fade away without a whimper.

Why would it last air in summer of '08, though? What is it about Passions that allows it another full six or seven months of airtime, even after being cancelled? Are they planning to take it to radio next? YouTube? Broadway?

I don't think it's right that DirecTV picks the show up, says it's the most watched show on the 101 history, and then goes and cancels it. Over at Coffeerooms, they're saying that the only reason DirecTV picked the show up was so they can get more subscribers. I agree. They don't care about "Passions", all they care about is getting new subscribers. Now that they did, they can forget the show ever existed. At least NBC treated this show with respect. The only thing we can hope for is for NBC to come to their senses, dump Today Show 4, and bring "Passions" back. That way, the show will reach its 10th anniversary, but that would be asking for too much. I really feel bad for the actors, they were so hopeful and were really committed to staying with the show only for DirecTV to slap them in the face. I'm pissed off for all of them. It's not right.:angry::angry:

God, and the sad thing is, I could totally see this happening.

Just let this show die already! It's going to go through fifteen different forms of broadcasting before it's finally let go completely. What ever happened to bowing out gracefully? JER is going to do everything he can to keep his creation alive until it finally just whimpers out pathetically.

I would feel this way if it were Days, too. I would want the show to go out on top of its game rather than being tossed around from network to network to network and cancelled fifteen times before it's finally ended pathetically.

    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).

    • I did some research and the story wrapped up with Eric,a caretaker responsible for Georgina's death who then  tried to do away with Laurie but a vision of Georgina spooked him and he smashed into a mirror, dying of glass wounds. So there was a supernatural element. I wonder if the Brody character in the credits was Eric Brody?
