PSNS: November Discussion

I just finished watching November 21's episode and it was excellent! By far the episode this month. We find out what Pilar's secret is and I was actually surprised at how fast Reilly let us know about it. LOL Anyway, the secret goes way to when Pilar only had Luis and Antonio. Pilar flies down to Mexico to see Juanita, her best friend from when she was a teenager. Pilar meets Juanita's husband, Carlos Vasquez, who is a total slimeball - Carlos hits on Pilar right away. Next we see Carlos talking over phone to one of his men - Carlos is actually running his family's mob organization and is planning on killing the rival mob family. He's been lying to Juanitia all this time. Pilar overhears everything, but Carlos catches her. Carlos tries to force himself on Pilar but she hits him, then he hits her back and knocks her down. He starts dragging her across the floor and hits her again and knocks her out. While Pilar is unconscious he rapes her (we don't actually see the rape). Carlos is still on top of her when Pilar regains consciousness she grabs a candlestick that fell on the floor and hits him twice on the head. Next we see Pilar sitting on the couch, she’s all dazed, with blood on her face. Juanita comes home and sees Pilar and wonders what happened. Pilar looks over to Carlos’ body.

Pilar: “He’s dead.”

Juanita: “But how? How could Carlos be dead?"

Pilar (crying): “Juanita, Carlos attacked me. He forced himself on me...I tried to stop him, but I couldn’t because he was so strong...and I.....I hit him with that.”

Juanita: “Liar! You killed him. You killed my Carlos!!”

Pilar (crying): “Noooo....I was defending myself.”

Juanita: “Murderer!!! Murderer!!!”

Pilar tries to tell her best friend the truth about her husband and that he raped her, but Juanita will have none of it. Then we hear sirens, it’s the police. When the police gets there, all hell breaks loose. We hear tons of gun fire going off. Juanita runs to the window and yells, “My children are out there!! NOOOOO!!!! STOP SHOOTING!! DON’T HURT MY CHILDREN!! NOOOO!!!” It’s a massacre. Her children are dead. Next we see Juanita in handcuffs.

Pilar: “I’m so sorry.”

Juanita: “My husband gone, my children murdered by the police....because you called them.”

Pilar: “I thought the police would stop the violence, not add to it.”

Juanita: “I don’t care what you thought. You are to blame for my entire family being killed. You took everything away from me, Pilar. Everything I held dear.

Pilar: “I didn’t mean to.....Carlos raped me and I tried to defend myself and I killed him by accident.”

Juanita: “You liar. My Carlos was a good man. We had a loving marriage. He wouldn’t hurt anyone. He certainly wouldn’t have forced himself on the likes of you.”

Pilar: “Juanita....”

Juanita: “Shut up!! I lost everyone I loved, Pilar......because of you. And now I’m going to prison for accessory for what I don’t even know!! All because of you!!”

Pilar: “I tried to warn you about the Vasquez family. I knew being with Carlos would be bad. I knew he would get you in trouble.”

Juanita: “I am only in trouble because of YOU!!!!! You better start running, Pilar. Run as far away as you can because I won’t be in prison forever and when I get out, I promise you, I will find you wherever you are and I WILL KILL YOU AND EVERYONE YOU LOVE!!!!!”

Flasback out to Pilar.....

Pilar: “Please God, protect me and family. I beg of you.”

I also noticed the clue of them making sure we knew that Pilar only had Luis and Antonio at the time of the rape. Which makes be believe Theresa is really Carlos' daughter, making her the heir to the Vasquez crime family!!! :o

Juanita is out of prison now and she's coming for Pilar and her family! Damn, I love this storyline. Eva was so good in this episode.

Hmm...what else is happening....oh yeah, Vincent/Valerie is pregnant!!! LMAO!!! That is so awesome. I loved Vincent’s reaction.... “Noo....I can’t be! It has to be a mistake.” HAHA Oh wait, there’s more. So Valerie goes to Eve and ask to get a blood test done to make sure he/she’s pregnant. Eve confirms the pregnancy and Valerie only wants Eve to be her doctor. So during the examination, Eve is checking “down there” and is shocked and says, “Oh my God, I recognize the genitalia.” ROTFLMAO!!

Another good storyline is the baby Jonathan storyline. I didn’t expect this storyline to be that good, but the new twist of Jonathan a liver transplant has made this storyline quite interesting. So baby Jonathan needs a liver transplant because Vincent changed Eve’s medical prescription (eveyone thinks it was Eve because she was drunk, which later on made Eve lose her medical licence). The transplant can only be from a close relative....nobody seems to be a match. So now Ethan goes to Theresa (who’s in jail....more on this later). Ethan thinks Jane could be a match for Jonathan, but he’s worried because if Jane gives up part of her liver, Jane could develop some problems in the future. Ethan thinks he can’t objectively make that decision (to get Jane tested), so he asked Theresa to make it. They’re in a dilemma! What will Ethan do? Does he risk the future of his daughter to save his baby son? What does Theresa do? Does she tell Ethan that he has another son and he might be a match for Jonathan, and risk losing Ethan? Awesome stuff.

Okay, back to why Theresa’s in prison. Theresa saw that Gwen/Ethan were getting closer because of the Jonathan crisis. Tabitha sees this as a perfect opportunity to wreak havoc (to get Endora back from the dark side, she has to do as much evil as possible LOL), so she disguises herself as a fortune teller.....yup....the same fortune teller costume from July 1999. Theresa even recognizes her and says, “Aren’t you the fortune teller who told me I was going to marry a Crane.” Jim Reilly was kicking it old school here! Loved it! So Tabitha gives Theresa this “anti-love potion” to give to Gwen. Theresa being despereate of course, puts the potion into Gwen’s drink. Gwen drinks it and starts choking and his hospitalized. It wasn’t an anti-love potion, it was poison!! LOL

Then there's Esme. What a character. LOL I totally loved Spike/Esme hooking up.....and then Esme/Julian! LMAO Julian was back to drunken/horny/dirty Julian.......the Julian of 1999! Drunk Julian/Esme dancing and then playing twister.

So there's the recap for those who can't wait.

Damn I love this show. I can't wait to see what happens next. Bravo, Passions!! Keep it up!!

LOL um is Vincent pregnant by Julian? God I wish I had DirecTV. I never really followed PSNS but I think it's awesome how Reilly is not allowing himself to be constrained by boundaries anymore. I mean, it never really felt like Reilly was constrained by boundaries, but he has amazingly proven that yes, he can go even further.

Toups I totally agree with you November has been a stellar month for Passions. It seems like the show has really hit its stride on DirecTV. I can't wait to see what happens next. Toups, do you know how the show is doing ratings wise? I hope we have the show for many years to come because I truly am loving it.

I disagree. The show has lost me. I get to watch a few episodes a week and other then Pilar's story and Esme, I could care less. They are destroying characters left and right again and Vincent being pregnant was too much for even me to swallow. I never thought the show could be worse then end of 2006-early 2007 but it is now. It's a mess IMO.

Did you see the November 22 episode yet? It was hilarious!! Tabitha and Kay's magic battle over Fancy/Noah/Paloma had be rolling. And of course Eve and Vincent's dialogue about the pregnancy. LMAO I'm going to try and type up the dialogue for tomorrow. It was absurd.

Unfortunately I don't know what the ratings are, but I believe DirectTV picked up Passions for another cycle. YAY!!

theres a huge hole in the Pilar story. This woman hates her and wants her and her family dead but the only reason why she hasnt done anything yet is bc she has no clue where Pilar is. Um then how come she didnt go to Maria and threaten to kill her if she didnt reveal Pilar's whereabouts? Why didnt she for that matter kill Maria and Paloma as a message to Pilar? Are we really to beleive that when Pilar visited Julianna from Harmony, that she didnt once talk about her new life in Harmony? Its not like Pilar moved or went into hiding. And why couldnt Pilar tell Theresa this secret? Its not like Theresa wouldnt understand especially since she tried to kill Alistair, a man who has forced himself on her

Speaking of Alistair, where the hell is he?

Simone is with Whitney in New Orleans. Vincent has threatened to go kill them several times. Toups, I'm with you, PSNS is on fire! I still haven't seen Thursday's episode, but the reveal of Pilar's secret has been fantastic! Eva Tomargo is one of the best soap actresses and she's once again knocking it out of the ballpark.

My one complaint would be the endless Gwen/Ethan/Theresa triangle. With DirecTV they should've moved on. Instead they simply restarted the storyline. They need to reveal Little Ethan's paternity and MOVE ON! I also think the Shuis story is moving far too slow. Get Beth and Marty back, immediately.

Loving anything with Vincent and Eve, especially the pregnancy. My only complaint is that they didn't keep Simone to give Eve some hope. The Russell's are the only family to suffer with this move. Pilar and the Crane's have most of their siblings. They could've cut someone worthless like Pretty to recast Simone and give her a love interest. Would also be nice for Kay to have a friend, so she isn't always stuck with Tabitha.

speaking of Pretty, where the hell is she? She and Alistair have disappeard and I completely forgot about them. They havent been on all month and their part of the Fancy/Luis storyline seems to be nonexistant as that storyline is now all about Shuis and Marty

They could always recast Simone and pair her with Pretty....... c070.gif

    • Good point. It would provide some conflict with Jack. As much as I am not interested in Claire, I don't find it difficult to understand why she might be a bit reluctant  to commit to a guy who has already been divorced twice or is  3 times?before he is 30. That's a natural obstacle that Claire would be hesitant about. But in GC every relationship is true love and various past marriages are forgotten.
    • He had no chance getting on The Sopranos

I’m in NYC, and I can’t help but wonder if NYC prosecutors, politicians, etc. ever felt the way that Laura did, back in the 80s-90s when they were trying to take down the mob.  “Oooh, don’t put John Gotti in prison. The guy who comes in after him might be worse”
    • Happy 18th Birthday, Sophia! I like that Tate gave her a birthday party. And that Marlena counseled him about whether or not he has feelings for Sophia, and his relationship with Holly. I like how messy Tate is and I hope he continues to be messy. He just needs to have more argument/fight scenes with Doug III

Days just needs to work a little bit more on establishing better chemistry between Tate and Sophia, but I still think that’s mostly due to Rachel Boyd. Sometimes, I think that Sophia might secretly be scheming, but with the way RB plays it, (if that’s what they’re going for), it doesn’t seem to be working. Tate was also really sweet and dorky during the party too The drug scenes didn’t do much for me though. I don’t mind that Kevin panicked and ran off with the drug once he heard Steve and Shawn coming, but I felt like that story was the weakest part of today. But I am interested in seeing what happens next. And I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Steve and Shawn had matching jackets Btw, I see Mayor Price established a quid pro quo with Xander today lol I wouldn’t mind that being more than just a plot point. It could lead to some pretty good drama if it’s handled correctly. And it would be a lot better than Xander declaring war on Sweet Bits/Chanel and Felicity.  And Stephanie, finally having her mother to confide in about her life, her relationship with Alex, etc. has been one of the best things about the Paula/Jeanne episodes. The book thing still seems very Ron/Jamey-like though, mostly because it’s so centered around Alex, sort of like how GH used to make storylines about Liz all about Finn or Franco Hopefully, Stephanie talks to Kayla about the book. I’d like to hear more of her perspective on it. I also like that Kayla and Marlena were there for each other as well. These are such better ways to use all three of them. And, we got an update about John One other thing I’ve noticed about the Paula/Jeanne episodes (except for the ones that are worked on by Jamey) is that they’re longer than Ron episodes. Episodes usually clock in at around 40-41 minutes now, as opposed to 35-37, or as short as 31. I like that.
    • Also Victor being the obstacle for Kyle/Claire feels forced. If anything it should be Diane. Diane has a history of having issues with the Newmans, doesn’t she? Jack could be the one trying to reel her in while she’s meddling in Kyle and Claire’s relationship. They’re making the characters of Diane, Victoria, Nick, Sharon be way too complacent when they could have a stronger role in the younger characters like Mariah/Tessa, Kyle/Claire etc
    • A year later we had these ratings for the week of May 11-17 1987. This was probably the last time the CBS soaps (at least til Dallas’ finale) ranked this high. Dynasty had already ended its season.  CBS reran the Dallas Early Years movie on Saturday night against Golden Girls’ season finale, which was the failed Empty Nest back door pilot.  Interestingly a repeat Family Ties was #1 this week. The week before the season finale of Family Ties beat out Cosby as well, but it was Cheers that beat them both out with Diane’s exit.

    • Hello to everybody!

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.

    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.
