The death of Jake McKinnon on ATWT was done really well. Lesli Kay pulled out all the stops in that scene. But Jennifer Munson's death is the gold standard of soap deaths. Having her family and friends around to individually say goodbye to her was fantastic. When Jen said goodbye to Hal and Barbara, even hardhearted me was bawling like a baby.

You knwo this makes me realize something--i don't think soaps liek to have the "weeks on deathbead" slow deaths the way they once were so known for--now usually if someone's that ill and we see them sick for weeks on end we knwo they'll ultimately be cured... But in the 70s and 80s especially it was one of the biggest soap staples--I've read that often it was a gimmick even used to raise ratings

Michael Malone wrote a great story with Megan's death. Much better than Passanante writing of Jennifer's death.

Last time I checked, Maggie Horton was alive and well.

There was nothing good about Sunset Beach. Nothing. Poor Another World got no support from NBC, while they salivated (at least for a while over Sunset Beach).

The same thing occured with LML/Alden/Smith to John Abbott on Y&R. And that was far superior than Passanante's writing.

SoapHunk's 100 Most Memorable Moments In Soap History has fifteen deaths on its list (five in the top 20) with Phillip Chancellor III's 1989 death on Y&R being the highest ranked one at number ten. Where was Cassie's 2005 death? I am glad they did not list Tony's 2006 death on GH in its top 100.

Maggies "death" wasn't real, but at the time, it was very much fact, and longtime fans who loved Maggie were broken hearted to see her being killed.

And you may not like Jennifer's death on ATWT, but it touched a lot of people. To balk at it is your right, but its pretty freakin rude to tell people they're wrong for feeling devastated by her demise because you find another writer's work "far superior".

David Kimball's trash compactor death on Y&R. I was only 4 or 5 at the time, but I remember it vividly to this day.. and watching it on YouTube just solidifies my opinion. It wasn't a tear-jerker, but it was brutal and shocking.

OTOH, I remember laughing at Maggie Horton's "death" on DOOL because it was so cheesy and she was so overbearing. My sisters and I were going, "Die already, dangit, jeeze! Hey, you can see up her nostrils..."

We didn't see her actual death, but Maureen Reardon Bauer's untimely passing, and the ripple effects throughout the entire community, on GL wasn't just good soap opera, but good drama, period.

Also gripping, for me, was Megan's death on OLTL. It's probably the only portion of Michael Malone's writing that I enjoyed.

I agree, the most powerful death for me was Maureen Bauer's on GL. There was a great and amazing storyline prior and following...it was real drama...I still cry seeing those scenes between her and Ed prior to her leaving...
