ALL: Worst year(s) for your soap

What year or years have been the worst for your soap? I will start out with AMC

I find 1998 and 2006 to be a tie for the worst year of AMC....for 1998, the stories were too plot driven (Palmer stealing Nazi art, Mateo's visions, Camille as a ghost and involved with Adam's past, the poison tattoo, Kit's rape) and there were very few stories that actually worked (ones that did, to me, were Adam/Liza, Ryan/Gillian, Stuart/Marian, Bianca battling anorexia but that was from Lorraine Broderick, Brooke's trial, and Dixie's return). Overall it just did not feel like AMC for me in 1998....at least on the flip side to this was the veterans were shown

Now for 2006, again the stories did not do well (Dixie's return, St. Ryan in every story, Jonathan/Lily, Terry the molester, Unabortion, Tad being Greg's killer and the entire Greg Madden murder mystery) and that same year they pushed full steam ahead to rewrite a very pivotal historical storyline in AMC's history and we all know which story I am talking about. What did work (Zach/Kendall, Zoe/Bianca, Satin Slayer, The Mardi Gras Ball, Janet's reign of terror) just did not measure up over the bad so the bad outweighed the good....but 2007, AMC has thankfully picked up the pace and improved

And what I find interesting with both these years is guess who was the head writer for each one...Megan McTavish! How interesting

Lots of candidates for DAYS:

1999-2000: Evil Gina, Subsex, Carrie/Mike on the floating bed, rapid sorasing of Belle/Shawn/Philip/Brady, Virtual Eden.

2003: The dreaded Higley months followed by the firing of numerous vets.

2005: Iraq, Stan, John is a druggie, Marlena/Roman, Chloe's plastic surgery adventures, Chelsea is Georgia, Austin/Sami/Carrie/Lucas redux, Jack arranging for Frankie to take his place.

2007: Touch the Sky, Santeen, a non-existent "vendetta" based on ret-conned history, Sami "torn" between her husband and rapist, sidelining of the big 4.

I left out 2001 because of the Salem bombings/Bridge collapse, 2004 because of the Sami/Lucas romance & 2006 because August-December was decent. Overall, these were also crap years.

2002 was awesome. B)

AMC: 2002, 2006. Those are the years I actually dropped AMC bc it got so bad.

GH: 2003. The year of the Mob 4. Those 2 couples dominated and brought the show down

OLTL: 2004. I think this was the year of the Santis. Nuff Said

Y&R: 2007. This year has been a complete mess

Y&R - 2007: This show has always been my one last hope for daytime, but watching the show this year is almost like watching a death. I fear the show will never recover from this. LML has RUINED this show.

AMC - 2006: See my comment for Y&R, and plug in JHC/McT for LML.

I actually think that 2000-2001 of AMC was the worst for me even though we still had some of the last full Bianca coming out episodes which were great. This was basicallyw hen Agnes Nixon left her brief return and Jean Passanante was in charge of the whole show. We had... Libidizone, psycho Leslie COulson, "Dog Boy", Mindy, meathead and the other giggly e popping teens, PSYCHO LAURA character assassination (all for a man), Ghost Gillian and her merry adventures (which involced possessed Opal for a bit)

Am i forgetting something?

I didn't like any of Dena Higley's stuff on OLTL even the bright lights other fans saw--I actually prefered the Santis and the end of Malone's period... However I think the period right between Malone's first era and the Labines stuff (which wasn't great but at least the show was fun to watch) with I believe Leah Laiman and Jean Passanante (there she is again) as HWs was pretty awful, even worse than the show under JFP

If 2002 was that bad for you on AMC, why not 2001, which was a worse year? The same goes for 2005.

2003 for GH was a good year. If you didn't like 2003, then what about 2001 (McTavish) & 2005 which were clearly worse. The "Fab Four" got blamed for everything under the sun concerning GH.

    • She, the star of the show that she is, was fantastic in the episode, and the scene does include her, but it's more on the embarrassing side of things, much more. It's certainly a fresh idea, I can say that.
    • I know French Fan had released monthly summaries for all the soaps from 1975/1976/1978 that helped to put focus on who wrote what.   It's somewhere in the message boards (not sure if in archives or not). From what I recall, Labine did start the Ben/Betsy/Arlene triangle, the Jamie/Diana story, the Felicia story, and Rick/Cal/Meg stories.    When Depriest came on, she kept the ball rolling with all of those tales by having Arlene's mom starting to work for Meg as there was blackmail from Arlene to Ben, Felicia's story became more psychological where she was being stalked.. but you couldn't tell if she was truly being stalked or if it was in her head, and I think Arlene also had an admirer that ended up dying in a struggle.  The months she was writing sounded interesting and full of tension. Once the Schneiders came on... it seemed as though what had been started by Labine and built on by Depriest was reversed by this team.  I wonder if Upton had to sort of rebuild because of what the Schneiders had done during their time working on the show.
    • I really didn't start watching the show until season 12 when I was a teen, so I only caught the last three years. I LOVED the show over all though...even that part of 13 that was a bit messy! So, it's been a treat streaming the previous seasons on Plex. I'm amazed at how well so much of the writing holds up over 30 years later. Far better than a lot that we get today! For the most part, stories move along at nice pace with good twists and turns! I just finished season 11, so I'm finally picking up where I started watching all those years before. When I started watching as a teen, Laura had already died, so while she was mentioned pretty often, I didn't have much background with the character. CM was an amazing actress and had chemistry with everyone. So, it's a bit of a headscratcher that they didn't seem to have any idea of what to do with her starting at around season 7. Her scenes at that point are mostly short, brief, and she has very little true story right until the episodes where she's dying in 9. I wonder what it was about the character that the writers couldn't figure out what to do with her. Also, Ben's exit storyline was a bit confusing for me. I never really got who this woman was who was stalking him and this "secret organization." The whole plot seems like it should be on a different show. Michelle Phillips and Nicolette Sheridan have really fun mom/daughter/frenemies chemistry. I remember having a huge crush on PP's Michael and being disappointed when he was written out at the end of season 12.
    • mayoclinic: Symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder and how severe they are can vary. People with the disorder can: Have an unreasonably high sense of self-importance and require constant, excessive admiration. Feel that they deserve privileges and special treatment. Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements. Make achievements and talents seem bigger than they are. Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate. Believe they are superior to others and can only spend time with or be understood by equally special people. Be critical of and look down on people they feel are not important. Expect special favors and expect other people to do what they want without questioning them. Take advantage of others to get what they want. Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others. Be envious of others and believe others envy them. Behave in an arrogant way, brag a lot and come across as conceited. Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office. At the same time, people with narcissistic personality disorder have trouble handling anything they view as criticism. They can: Become impatient or angry when they don't receive special recognition or treatment. Have major problems interacting with others and easily feel slighted. React with rage or contempt and try to belittle other people to make themselves appear superior. Have difficulty managing their emotions and behavior. Experience major problems dealing with stress and adapting to change. Withdraw from or avoid situations in which they might fail. Feel depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection. Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, humiliation and fear of being exposed as a failure. --- Or maybe Leslie simply has Soap Villain Syndrome.
    • Ambryn Michelle and Trisha Mann-Grant are easily the most charismatic actresses to grace daytime in a longggggggg time. This show wouldn’t be as good without them, IMO.
    • whatever she has is far worse. Narcissism is just a symptom for deeper issues.

    • What is it? I already know Ambyr was electrifying.
    • The show isn't great right now, but I do hope it can stay on, unlikely as that may be. I guess at least it's better than this time last year. I will say it doesn't really feel like Shortland Street anymore.
    • You guys are going to die when you watch the first scene of today's episode.
