Fire Jean Passanante and Chris Goutman

So I decided to start this thread tonight. I thought of varies ways to word the title. I thought maybe of posters being able to say why a certain storyline wasnt working for them and how it could be fixed. But I axed that because no one listens to the viewers. I will just say I will not rant anymore. This is probably the last monthly rant. It is obvious to me changes will never be made. It is sad when you are not enjoying the show you once loved for almost 30 years. But that has happened. I am only enjoying Nuke and some of the Carly storyline. But Jack has become to much of an ass for me to continue to care. So what's there left to watch? Some characters I love are not shown or are either in bad storylines.

So as I sign off I hope to see more Nuke. Hopefully leading to a full sex scene between the two. Then ATWT can go into cancellation. I just cant bare to watch a show completely unravel in front of me. But thats what Jean Passanante and Christopher Goutman have done to my ATWT. Gone are the days of the exciting Friday cliffhanger. The clever writing leading to a shocking twist. The last time I felt that about ATWT was with Barbara boathouse fire back in 2001. Most recently Nuke kiss left me wanting more of them. Besides that ATWT has totally stunk. Thank you Mr. Goutman and Passhack for ruiining a historical classic soap opera known as ATWT.

I second your motion and agree with the comments, but for some reason, I just don't think either of them are going anywhere. ATWT will go out with these two writing a crappy series finale. Maybe they will bring back the fake gorilla from the AW finale to kidnap Nancy. Oh wait, Nancy won't even be mentioned.

I agree that sadly when the show ends next July that it will be Jean and Chris that finish it out :( Not a fact on the July thing but just speculation. I agree that the show is really not recognizable anymore, sure I will say a certain show is good once in a while but compared to what it should be even those shows suck. Lets face it the show is dieing a slow painful death, no sets, no houses(except for Gwen and Will how nice), No family interaction, no interaction outside of storylines, all newbies running the show, the vets are nowhere to be seen, this includes anyone over the age of 30 it seems. I could go on for ages on just how sad it is to see this show go right down the tubes. I agree with Soapduds that the last good storyline we really had would be the boathouse explosion, that and the Spa storyline(I know not many liked it but I loved it, lol) Right now I am sort of in the same boat I am watching for Luke and Noah and that is about it anymore, I try to get into the other storylines but they are so horrid and boring that I just can't. I already gave up on Y&R and B&B it will be a shame if I have to give up on ATWT before it ends.

And some more, now we can't even get a full opening everyday anymore, sh*tty camera work and lighting the other day, another sign that the show does not even have enough money for the basics :( If CBS or PGP cared about the future of this show, JP, CG would be gone now, not to mention they would give them atleast enough money for the basics and enough money to have good storylines again that involve the whole cast instead of non core characters. Even the actors look like they could careless anymore, scenes that should be great no matter how bad written are not anymore because the actors are not putting there all into it anymore. Poor Jen Landon looks like she is about to pass out in most scenes, then again who could blame her she never gets a friggin break, I am sure she would like one once in a while, Its not even just Jen, it just really seems like most don't care anymore. I will say one thing and I know everyone will think I am playing favorites which I am not at all, but the only person bringing there acting chops with them lately is Van Hansis, then again he is probably just happy that he can finally be on screen after a 10 month break of only 30 shows. I love Maura and even she seems like she does not like what she has to do anymore, again who could blame her, same storylines year after year, and again over worked.

I really think that SOW blind spot about actors not being happy is about ATWT it is written all over the actors faces.

Wow talk about death and misery in a thread...

It sucks (for you that is) that you're not enjoying the show. But I happen to think that its decent overall. Definitely not in the pit of abomination like Passions is at least. Plus the acting on ATWT is definitely by far the best on Daytime besides Y&R and GH. And I haven't noticed any "fatigue" on the part of the actors but I'm sure that JL probably does get moments of tiredness...she does lead a very busy life I'm sure.

Anyways I hope this whole cancellation talk is just rumor. It would be painful to know that I won't be seeing Paul, Ro, Meg, Carly, Luke, Aaron, Will, Gwen, Maddie, Allison and Co years from now...

The fall previews leave me no indication that the tide will turn by year's end. Just look at Goutman's smarmy acceptance of praise for the gay story. If it ended today, the show would sink like the Titanic. How could this man not see a problem in only exploring the loss of Susan's sobriety for 3 episodes? ATWT is only dedicated to stunts with no long term investment. Porn, crystal meth, dead hookers, more dead babies, nurses running corporations. Even Rosanna is a mere replacement for Emily in the woman-miserable-because-of-a-man department. Things weren't even this bad before Sheffer came on board. As far as ATWT and GL in general, I wonder if this may help explain things:

So are there no checks and balances in place to whip Goutman into shape if he falters? :o Despite Dwyer-Dobbin's often criticized failings, I cannot remember the P&G shows being as contrived and BORING as they've gotten in the last couple years.

I really do think so, because at least back then, the writing wasn't also compounded by limited sets and a refusal to give veterans airtime. That's a part of why Y&R remains tolerable for me right now. It would be different if it looked cheap and we never saw Katherine, Nikki, Victor, Jack or Jill.

If you want Procter & Gamble Productions to fire Passanante & Goutman, who would you like to replace them with? Ellen Weston and John Conboy were deeply criticized for their tenure at GL. Now GL has been stuck with David Kreizman & Ellen Wheeler who are unfortunaetly worse than their predecessors. The same goes for ATWT: Hogan Sheffer is a far better writer than Passanante will ever be & Felicia Minei Behr helped steer ATWT in the right direction which Goutman picked up on. If it wasn't for Behr's talent & success, Goutman's job to revitalize the aging warhorse would have been much harder.

It's time for new writers to come on board, a house cleaning of the writing staff, and by new I mean another Sheffer: Writers who've never watched daytime before. If that's not feasable, then intice Nancy Curlee & Pamela Long to head write ATWT. Both writers rocked the hell out of GL with their quality writing as head writers. Those were the days... :(

For EP, how about another ex-AMC EP: Francesca James. I find her to be under-rated. Would Curlee make for a good EP? I know that Long was EP of Twice In A Lifetime, so she has experience in that field.

I am soooo glad that I discovered this thread already in progress...... I have been thinking many of the same thoughts re: ATWT of late over the whole summer really. My take on the show is quite simple: The people in charge have ALL run their course!!!---

There are still some brigt spots here & there. I loved having Lucinda & Susan featured pretty prominently over the summer. Maura West is still top notch even admist bleak storylines. The characters of Henry & Vienna are a treat, even in the short, light scenes!!! And yes, I love that there is Luke & Noah in the mix.............. I am just hoping that the 'writers' & producers continue to support the storyline & not pull a sudden, out of nowhere, conclusion to this timely storyline. Lastly, I applaud whomever responsible, for AT LEAST keeping our Beloved Snyder Kitchen Set featured. We long-time fans have that, if not much else to remind us of yesteryear Oakdale.

ITA, the stories are painfully shallow for the most part. Poor Gwen & Will. They have to be the most miserable young couple of the last 15 years on Daytime!!!! The lack of character crossover & interaction is almost insane on the show right now. (Gwen is just about killed by Cleo & it is hardly mentioned a couple days later......... by ANY member of her family even!) Paul Ryan is revealed to be alive & it barely registers with anyone sans Babs & Meg. How have TPTB allowed this great ensemble cast to become sooooooooooooooooooo fragmented???? It cannot all be a case of budget restraints, can it??

Above posts have already mentioned the very few sets this show still manages to showcase-- I have to say though..... I too, find the lack of any real feeling of community on ATWT, is more sad now than ever before! I do fear that soon entire episodes will alternate between the Lakeview Towers & Al's....... then maybe the Snyder Kitchen on really special occasions!!! It is tragic. There are still sopas on the air that feature quite a few sets!!! (And I am not just referring to Y&R)

If there is indeed any real hope for the show to turn around, I think that it must mean that someway somehow the show opt for new Writers & Producers, pronto! The cast is still more than capable!!! Heck, what ATWT does have is a bevy of Vets still under contract!!!!!!!!!! Give them stories while you can CBS & P&G.

Surely, the show cannot continue for another year even, in its current fashion.

I've ONLY been watching for Luke/Noah--and while it looks like they're finally giving them the material they deserve (July where they basically showed up every once and a while to prop up Cleo's story was frustrating) it just makes me think what a wasted opportunity this all is--judging from youtube and forum discussions lotsa people are tunning into the show for Luke and Noah--people who never thought they'd enjoy a soap have said how much they love the story, etc... But there's very little else on the show I could see catching their attention (at least very little does mine--and I've been a casual ATWT watcher for over 10 years so know most of the characters, etc)

    • I actually thought he came off as younger. It's so hard to buy Martin as Nicole and Ted's son unless they had him when they were 12.
    • @chrisml Isn't remarkable that, on a soap whose brand is built on twists and mysteries, that Raven's last straw was as simple as Logan saying that she was incapable of loving Jamey.  In the episode when Raven exit's and leaves Jamey with April, I can remember feeling the subtext that Raven is also trying to talk herself into leaving him behind.  There's so much in that little scene.  She's trying to stick it to Logan for saying she was a bad mother.  She's both granting April's wish, and damning her with the old adage of being careful what she wished for.  And, she's hinting to Draper that she's going to boff his father. It remains my favorite scene, and it still blows my mind that was not the end of that episode.
    • Oh lord not Drew just figured out it was both Nina and Portia that set him up. Willow WILL never leave this man. Ric taking the case purely just to spite Sonny is [!@#$%^&*].ing hilarious.
    • And in addition to Patti being de-aged, she was no longer a nurse, divorced from Len(fair enough) and her two children were not seen and barely mentioned. So basically she was a totally new character. For newer viewers it didn't matter but any loyal viewers would have been wondering about all the changes with Patti. Sarah Whiting always puzzled me. The writers finally decide to acknowledge Jo's family and do so by making up a never mentioned adopted teen. Why not just bring in Tracey, Jo's actual grandaughter? As for Liza, perhaps it would have been wise to rest the character when Sherry left. They were big shoes to fill and her Liza was so identified with Travis. I don't recall what was going on in the story at that time but if they knew Sherry was leaving, write it so Liza would leave town to care for an ailing Janet and take a breather with the character for a few months.
    • Ahh interesting. Yeah, that's sad for A-M. I will say, he and Nick became fast friends when Susan started working at Spaulding. A-M/Lucy/Nick/Susan had a lot of double dates in those 7 months. A-M was Nick's best man at his wedding to Susan, which now that I think about it, is odd that he wouldn't have considered Fletcher. I remember those two were so close at the paper, and even living together with Ben. Once Tangie left SF, Nick left the paper, and Fletcher/Holly were rarely seen... so I guess they felt that friendship wasn't shown often enough anymore (which again, lazy writing).
    • I honestly don't think Alan-Michael ever really had a friend on the show. Maybe Cameron or Samantha, but otherwise... *Cameron was a high school friend who ended up dating teenage Dinah after she broke up with A-M. Samantha is Phillip's biological sister, who A-M treated like a sister. Interestingly enough, they were born the same week on the show in 1981, but A-M ends up being older than her when she returns to town in '89.
    • I thought he was very cute too, and a likeable presence even though on paper Cliff was a prick. I wonder if he was well-liked by viewers or someone at the show as there's a point in these episodes where he could have been written out and was not.
    • I'm not a Derek fan at all (and not even all that much of an Ashley fan, but man has she become awful in their relationship--like she's not even trying.  But also I admit, I don't think I'd ever live with someone, even someone I was married to (I know they're not married) in a bachelor apartment unless I had to.  Even just a one bedroom would make a big difference.  I'd probably end up hiding in the bathroom a lot

    • Going back to this, I'm even more confused why Amanda would say that only a year later (lazy writers), because I'm watching April 29, 1996 right now and literally all of the current on-air Spauldings (Alan, Alex, Amanda, A-M) and Coopers (Buzz, Lucy, Frank, Eleni) are on a plane together for Lucy/A-M's wedding. Along with Reva (which right now makes sense because she's married to Buzz), Dahlia (so out of place, but by default because they can't let a high school kid they just took in stay home alone), and a very random Rick (he's barely had any interaction with any of these characters all year haha).  It's like a madhouse on that plane, which is pretty comical because most of them don't get along... but they very much know each other. Still miffed that Bridget is totally forgotten here. And David. And Nick/Susan! Couldn't they have waited to fire them until after this wedding?  It was only like 2 months later. They had to make Alan be A-M's best man (which is wild to me) bc A-M doesn't even have any real friends on the show right now.
    • You're right and I do imagine many longtime viewers were put off. I suppose the show felt many of the longtime fans were gone, so in that sense I get it if the show had continued. They should have taken greater care with the generation below Patti. It's hard to remember she was meant to be mother to Sarah. I wonder if that is one of the reasons they killed Sarah before Patti arrived. Or were those different teams?
