Members MichaelGL
I will always resent that woman for creating Jeffrey O'Neil along with a laundy list of some other stuff.
Members JackPeyton
lolz^ i know im srsly the ONLY person who liked it but... the only time i liked jeffO was when he had that little affair with Marah.
Members Khan
Jeffrey O'Neill was, and is, bad, but nothing compares to Weston's ultimate crime, the Maryanne Caruthers "mystery." Not one moment of it jibed with history or logic, and it was a shameless ripoff of the Lake Elizabeth mystery, to boot.
Members Khan
As for the current, notorious HW's... James Harmon Brown & Barbara Esensten (AMC): Whenever they're in their element, they're very good at emotional, heart-tugging storytelling. (I know many will scoff at that, lol, but I think it's true.) Unfortunately, however, they're often asked, I think, to write outside of what they are adapt at. The result? Reva's clone, for one. Jean Passanante (ATWT): A very intelligent, accomplished woman. Alas, I think her disdain for the genre is always bubbling at the surface of her work. I mean, there's coming up with lame plot twists, b/c you don't know any better; and then there's coming up w/ lame twists, b/c you honestly don't give a s**t. IMO, Passanante falls somewhere along the latter. Bradley Bell (B&: He could be the finest HW in soaps today...if he would just slow down, and stop changing his mind every 23 seconds. Hogan Sheffer (DAYS): A man who posesses extraordinary creativity, but who has yet to learn that, when it comes to storytelling, the second act makes all the difference. Robert Guza (GH): His vision for GH is, perhaps, misguided, but it isn't exactly ill-informed. The truth is, if Gloria Monty were still alive and producing the show, it wouldn't be too different from the GH we're getting now. Monty's GH, however, had more heart, and more humor, than the GH of today. It didn't matter that the show wasn't really about the hospital anymore, b/c Monty, in her own, eccentric way, made Port Charles a delightful place to visit everyday. Guza's GH, OTOH, is dark, and foreboding, and not that much fun. David Kreizman (GL): An eager young chap who is in over his proverbial head. Even the best of his work comes across as mediocre fanfic - and that's putting it mildly. Ron Carlivati (OLTL): Frankly, it's still too early to make any real assessments of this man's work. Yes, OLTL is more entertaining these days, but, you know, after Dena Higley, there was nowhere to go but up. Lynn Marie Latham (Y&R): She would be fine, I guess, for any other soap, but I feel as if she's only paying lip service to Y&R, to its cast and crew, and, perhaps most important, to its' audience. (Still, the ratings are high, compared to other shows, so what the hell do I know?)
Members Sylph
Oh, now he's good, but when I was praising him, you said he sucked big time. Do I need to answer this? Good post, though.
Members Khan
I'm sorry, sylph, but I don't recall saying Bradley Bell "sucked big time." (beat) Of course, I never gave him much praise, either. I apologize, though, for offending you and for contradicting myself.
Members MichaelGL
I like your assesment of the current Head Writers. I agree with your comparision of Monty and Guza, you hit the nail on the head with that. Also B&E do know how to write emotional stuff (Lizzie's lukemia). Members Sylph
Those weren't your exact words, of course, that is why I didn't put them in inverted commas. You used a circumlocution, but that was the point, wasn't it? My post in this thread, on the other hand, wasn't cynical or ill-intended. Your apology is accepted gladly. Bradley is good, but he has a bad reputation because fans criticise him way too harshly everywhere and then those who didn't see his work accept that opinion. Many have also stated that the role of story consultant or something like that would suit him much better, and that he should leave head-writing duties to someone else. And I agree. There are many reasons on my side not to like him - he ruined Brooke in my eyes pretty much forever as well as Stephanie, he made all his man as weak as they can possibly be, then there are those endless triangles and incestuousness... You know what I'm talking about.
Members Khan
>> Many have also stated that the role of story consultant or something like that would suit him much better, and that he should leave head-writing duties to someone else. And I agree. I'll give Bradley Bell this much: he knows better than anyone when to cut his losses on a story and move on. My only question is, what about when the story has actual potential? Sometimes, I can't tell whether Bell sabotages his own good stories b/c he's insecure, or b/c he's just plain bipolar. Relatively speaking, though, Bell is the best HW employed today. He "gets" his show alot better than most other HW's do. Again, though, that isn't saying much, nor should it blind everyone to the man's serious faults as a writer. I don't know if replacing him as HW is the answer - although, it would be interesting to see B&B through someone else's eyes - that is, so long as that new HW doesn't ignore what makes B&B unique from the rest. Members RuAsRuAnAu
Poor John McCook. He won't get anything juicy as long as Bradley Bell remains as HW. The man is a good actor. Maybe LML can create a new character for him to portray on Y&R. After reading Mulchaey's recent interview, I am even more convinced that he should be B&B's HW. As for Alden & Ferri Esser, they should return to Y&R. Brett Staneart should only be a SW.
Members Khan
Patrick Mulcahey head-write B&B? Huh-uh. It's either AMC, or nothing.
Members RuAsRuAnAu
I know people just hate it, it makes their blood boil, it stirs up violent rage within them, but Mulcahey & Guza Jr. are close friends (Mulcahey speaks highly of Guza Jr.), so I would not surprise me to see him return to GH. Members StevieM
OK, this could take awhile, and some people (mainly Toups who knows me) might be surprised by my answers. I actually won't list Reilly, although I think he destroyed DAYS, and even Passions would have been better off had he left--it might have been saved. I'm leaving Reilly off the list because I would actually like to see what he could do with OLTL. He might be what they need, especially with Velentini there to keep him in-line, and a more normal team of sub-writers. But definitely ban Reilly from NBC daytime forever. Which shouldn't be too long, since thanks to him there won't be any soaps left on NBC pretty soon. I won't list Hogan either, although he's destroyed DAYS. If CBS goes ahead and cancels ATWT and GL then Chris Goutman will be free to return to AMC. I suspect that cancellation will happen, and I suspect that Goutman will get the job offer from ABC. At that point I think that Goutman and Scheffer should be reunited at AMC. It's possible that AMC is the right show for Scheffer--I can see some of the stuff he does on DAYS being more popular over there. It is somewhat of a show about seduction. JFP is a producer but I'd like to see her banned. She completely destroyed AW (with more then a little help from NBC daytime VP Susan Lee). And let's also ban the worst of her HWs over there, Tom King and Craig Carlson. I'm not sure why Elizabeth Korte was suggested by someone. I thing that she and MVJ give great dialouge. Maura Penders too, I don't know why she isn't working. I can't quite bring myself to ban Guza, but I will call for him to be dismissed from GH. When Guza is on, boy is he on. He really does have his moments. But he has done incredible damage to GH, and the show needs to re-create itself. I'd actually be curious to see what SSM could do with GH. And definitely get Wendy Riche back as EP. I don't see what's so bad about LML. But I admit I don't know her work too well. Tom Langan, Peter Brash, Paula Cwikly and Dena Higley all get banned for life. Maybe I'll give Brash a reprieve, since in some matters he just didn't know any better. Paula did...she was just a vindictive person. So were TL and Dena. (I hope you all saw my "promo" post, LOL). As for Brad Bell.....N/A. B&B is his show. To ban him is to ban the show.
