Not bitter. Just pointing out the mags are several years behind viewing trends. Their lack of creativity hasn't helped the genre gain any new fans. I want Days to succeed, but I also remember when it was actually a great show.

Even if Days is the lowest rated soap once Passions goes off the air, the soap magazines will still give them as many covers as possible claiming that they and GH are the ones that sell. I swear, even if Days was five million viewers behind the closest soap, they'd still get the cover of SOD every other week. And of the course the annual "plan to save Days" edition.

It's very encouraging to see all the CBS soaps up from a year ago. I think the quality sucks on them, but obviously they are doing something right in terms of marketing and reaching out to fans.

Days would be better off with a good lead-in. I don't even know what most markets show before Days and how often that changes. Is it something like Jerry Springer or Rachel Ray? Judge Judy? CBS and ABC have pretty cohesive all day line-ups and apparently that is an advantage.

On a bright note, Days does air several times on Soapnet so the show makes money from those airings and not just the ones on NBC.

ATWT and GL just got an international distribution deal so more money for those shows too.

CBS.com has done more and more video with commercials and will have InTurn2. If the network can find a way to make more money from other avenues, 3 millions fans today may not equal the same dollars as 3 million fans a year from now.

If the above from last week was a new low in total viewers and the total viewers for OLTL this week is 6. OLTL 2,898,000 (-3,000/-233,000), then didn't OLTL hit yet another new low in total viewers? Also didn't they hit a new series low for the 18-34?

Yup, new low for OLTL. Thanks for catching this. LOL :)

No, thank you. I wondered if I was missing something. Thanks for confirming.

I posted this elsewhere: Has early daylight savings time harmed the soaps?

In recent weeks, some of us have puzzled about declining ratings for the soaps...not the general decline, but a specific, all-show plummet that almost every show had. Y&R's average, for example, fell below 4.0 (3.9 or 3.8)..but all the shows died in March :-).

I got the idea from Matt Roush (TV Guide columnist), who blamed early DST for the recent decline in NBC Thursday night sitcom ratings.

Could this also be true for soaps? Assuming many viewers watch at night, could it be that earlier DST has them outside with the kids longer...and not tuning into their soaps? Would this affect the network ratings (or do they only count real-time audience).

I'd love to know...

If days does leave NBC in 2009 and that is a big IF,

Honey, why is that a big if?! Jeff Zucker(Presdient of NBC) has already told the press they probably won't renew DAYS past 2009! PASSIONS is gone and that leaves DAYS, the sole survivor on the daypart. NBC is gearing up for FRESH SQUEEZED(or whatever the hell the name of that live entertainment show is)...they've already registered a website for it.

I know you love DAYS(I mean, from 1995-2000, DAYS was my *SHOW*), but look at what the show is stacked against, in addition to its Nielsen Numbers?!

nbc will be losing lots of veiwers and everyone who watches days will turn nbc off and wont turn around, i know i will...

NBC has already lost alot of its viewers. Pretty soon NBC will be behind CW in Total Viewers at the rate they are going.

Nbc may chicken out and not release days from their network because the last time nbc said they were going to release days they chicken out and signed days to a new contract because ABC almost had days of our lives, i think that was right before the salem stalker storyline.

The ABC talk was in 1998...DAYS on ABC at that time would have been awesome because the show was then #2 in the Nielsens and I think consistently #1 in Women 18-49. A winning lineup for sure. During the Higley era(when NBC almost cancelled DAYS), there was no existing negotiation(that I am aware of) involving DAYS/ABC.

If nbc does release days and they get picked up by another network, Corday and their fans and the actors and the man hogan sheffer will be laughing in nbc's faces because IF days leaves NBC, nbc is dead, they will lose every days of our lives fan and lose lots of viewers, its not fiction, it is a fact.

NBC is already dead honey! And Jeff Zucker has no problem cancelling a show that is one of the lowest-rated soaps in daytime right now. NBC won't be dead because of DAYS's cancellation, NBC will be dead because of NBC.

Days right now is in a slump but they will pull out of it and by the may/summer days will be back to being great again, i can already tell, these last couple of days has been great, the whole month of april been better then jan/feb/mar.

This board needs your optimism. I don't mean to shoot you down or anything, but the writing is on the wall.

Frons did say this:

If NBC cancelled it, would you buy Days of Our Lives?

Right now, I’m really focused on - for SoapNet – the GH Nightshift spin-off. Our first loyalty is going to be to the shows our viewers are really connected to. Certainly the success of ABC soaps on ABC would really prevent us from picking up Days for ABC and I don’t know that when the time comes for Days and NBC to part ways that we’ll have an economic model that will make it practical to put on SoapNet. Otherwise, I would certainly consider it. But remember, if this kind of decline continues for Days on NBC, it would be very hard for anyone to continue with that show in 2009. The erosion of the audience would be so great, it would be very difficult to rebuild it. At the same time, you’re going to be facing a very high cost structure because the show’s probably been on for like 40 years. Carrying a heavy cost structure and a declining audience – that’s a rough business to be in.

Not very hopeful, but still it's something.

That quote from Frons tells me something else. He implies that the 'success' of ABC soaps is one thing preventing him from picking up DOOL. AMC may be on a small upswing, but OLTL also hit a demo low, and falling (and will until they take far more drastic action than they seem willing to.) ABC soaps cannot exactly be termed successful at the moment, despite the 'NightShift' spinoff (which sounds suspiciously like GH's ORIGINAL storyline intent). OLTL is falling into many of the same issues that plague DOOL.

It cuts both ways. If Frons can make a go of ABC soaps, they stay, and there's no room for DOOL, but if they fail, there's no reason to pick up DOOL either. There's little in Fron's business model that gives me any hope.

I'm not all that broken up about the declining possibility of DAYS moving to ABC, personally. I don't want MY show, the show that's been a big part of my life for the past 14 years anywhere near the destructive clutches of Brian Satan-Spawn Frons.

  • Member
Well what is Fox took DOOL?

would u mind?

Oh, I would be thrilled if FOX acquired DAYS, and in a perfect world, that's what would happen, but I doubt it will.
