Getting a new Soap on the air

Ok

Does anyone know the process of writing a BIBLE for a daytime Drama?

How much does it cost to get the finished product copyrighted?

Also since the networks arent that big on daytime dramas now could a daytime drama work in the syndication market?

Any pros and Cons?

Thanks

Hmm, I know MyNetwork TV is struggling, but I think you'd probably have a better chance trying to sell a telenovela to them than trying to syndicate a full-blown soap. Also, you could pitch to other countries I suppose, like the UK, where soaps are more respected.

I am not connected with "the industry" though, so really can't help you much on your questions I'm afraid.

Can't you just get a copyright from mailing the bible to yourself and keeping the package sealed? I'm pretty sure I heard that before.

I think a new soap could succeed, but when was the last time a traditional soap was launched? Both SuBe and PSNS were experimental soaps and PC was young and progressive. If someone launched a traditional, multi-generational soap with a clear vision, it could work. Y&R, Capitol and B&B are great modern examples of that. Be bold and original, but at the core it has to be a traditional soap.

MyNetworkTV was a bad idea and it was rushed. What would've been better is the original plan to air them on FOX networks during daytime. It would draw more attention from the soap press and be easier to promote. FOX is launching a news show ala Today, so why not add the two soaps?

Does anyone know if the bible is just the back story of the characters and their descriptions or does it actually include ideas for episodes as well

I want to give this a try so im trying to make sure I have all the bases covered

While a copyright is very important, there is another route to protect intellectual property without an official copyright.

(I'm not 100% sure on this information, so you may want to do more research)

I believe you can send a copy to the Writers Guild of America, along with a nominal fee. The WGA will file the copy along with the date that it was received. This is done in case someone "steals" your idea somewhere down the road and attempts to pass it off as their own. In any sort of legal action, the WGA would be able to verify the date they filed your soap bible which can be used to determine if an idea was actually "stolen" and who "stole" it.

Good luck on your attempt, and unlike some of the other posters, I do not share their pessimism concerning the daytime genre. Sure the news of NBC's cancellation of "Passions" and imminent cancellation of "Days of Our Lives" (in 2009) are distressing, CBS continues to show confidence in the genre and the much maligned ABC soaps appear to be on a ratings upswing - despite rumors of an expanded "Good Morning, America" and the demise of "All My Children" or "One Life to Live".

    • That works for me. And/or Dani could be in with a fast crowd and got involved with something shady and Bill came to the rescue.
    • I think judging from synoses of other shows, that the summaries are roughly in the order they played throughout the year. So Kubeck returned to a more crime theme. Maybe now that EON was competition they wanted that audience? Re Jameson Parker, the story goes that he was not pleased that TPTB wanted to tread lightly with the Dale/Ellen romance and he was taken to task over some improvs he added re touching Ellen in ways considered too 'racey'.So when his contract was up he quickly moved to OLTL as Brad.
    • I don’t think it was intentional. Because if it was, I imagine it would’ve been mentioned in one of those ‘Welcome to the Neighborhood’ specials that aired.
    • I mean, soaps are a world were 5'2" Eva Longoria can be a runway model...
    • I wonder if Michelle Val Jean even considered this. It seems so obvious to many of us.  If they want the Dupree name to continue, Anita and Vernon need at least one male heir.  Two would be even better.  Do you think Val Jean may have written it this way intentionally for some reason?
    • Agreed Anita and Vernon definitely needed a son or two.  The Duprees are the core family, yet the name practically doesn’t even exist anymore.  Some slot machines would be nice

    • I would have it come out that Dani was pregnant with Naomi while her career was still on the rise, and the idea of a Dupree having a baby out of wedlock would be scandalous, and Bill, who was starting out in his career, received pressure from Vernon/Anita to do the "honorable thing" and marry her and in exchange Vernon promised to help his new son-in-law out with his legal career.

    • Dani as a model never sat right with me, especially when some of the cringe dialogue was saying she was a rival to Naomi Campbell. Not trying to be mean or disparaging against her, but in no world would Dani/Karla Mosley's looks have ever have been accepted in the real world and ultra competitive high fashion modeling industry - certainly not 15-20 years ago. I get this is fiction, but come on...
    • Thanks @Paul Raven really appreciate this.  Did Parker Stevenson leave Somerset for OLTL, or was he written out by the show? The Ellen and Dale story seemed to get a positive response, at least in some quarters. Maybe that was too much for P&G. I didn't know about any stories Ellen had after the relationship ended so I'm glad to know a little more now. Seems like almost every woman on the show had to have some tie or desire for Julian. I assume this is not written in chronological order, but I notice we got from many typical melodramatic soap stories to all crime stories.  All this focus on Carrie, Vicky, Heather, etc. reminds me of how much the show seemed to cycle through heroines compared to how they settled on Julian. Who was the long running woman who got focus? Ginger?   I didn't realize this final headwriter was an unknown. I wonder if Henry Slesar may have recommended him? Or knew of the real him? Somerset had already had a long run for a soap spinoff, but I wonder if the show would have been renewed if Lemay and Rauch hadn't agreed to try their own soap...or if NBC/P&G were just done.
