Happy Birthday, Sunset Beach!

On January 5th, 1997, NBC launched Sunset Beach. They cancelled it on December 29th, 1999, but I still have great memories of it, thanks to an old videotape I found last month containing the final two episodes of the show!

OK, so I watched them as I was recuperating from a cold and -- man! Beth Millstein and Ann Schloette (sp?) wrote these final episodes. At the time I didn't appreciate how good they were because I was so bummed about SuBe being cancelled. But seeing them again, I realized how great these epis were because there was so much pay-off in all the scenes. Caitlin giving Trey back to Olivia. Olivia tenderly stroking Gregory's cheek goodbye in jail. Olivia and Annie walking into the church together. Gabi choosing to make the ultimate sacrifice and leave town. SO good!

BTW, I'd forgottem how hot Father Antonio was. DAMN.

Even the cheesey Kansas dream sequence was cool, because it emphasize all the close ties between the characters -- and our attachment to them.

The whole thing was a real "Thank You" to the audience. Class.

Some pics to remember the show by. BTW, I hear that Sarah Buxton had a baby in December with bf Shane Brolly:

Even though I never really watched BEACH seriously during its run, I always kept up with what was going on on the show. I loved loved loved Terror Island, Shockwave, and Who Killed Francesca, and anything with Annie. NBC was so stupid to cancel it.

GOD, I still have tapes of this FANTASTIC show.

Being older, I watch this with so much appreciation for it's humor and camp.

I think one of my favorite set of episodes(and I still watch to this day) was the episode where Meg "pushed" Maria down the stairs(yeah, it was an accident, but I hate that [!@#$%^&*]. She meant to do it whether or not it happened).

I remembered it only had a handful of characters(Maria, Meg, Ben, Casey, Sara, Antonio, Gabi, Ricardo, Carmen). Every scene just seemed so much longer and I really didn't expect for what happened at the end to happen. I thought the execution of this episode was well done.

Loved the final scene with Meg confronting Maria and her paranoia getting the best of her.

As much as I loved SUNSET BEACH's big stories, I love some of the underrated plot-moving gems they gave us.

LOVED when Annie and Mrs. Moreau came up with that potion to make Olivia drink. Before they came up with it, Annie was trying to figure out how to destroy Olivia and she was imagining how a love potion with Olivia screwing the whole town. Caitlin and Sean popped in the door and said "Mom" as they saw her with Cole, then Meg's Dad, then Brad and finally, Rose the Maid. LMAO!

BEACH had such a demented sense of humor.

One thing I haven't appreciated(post-BEACH) is all the Susan Ward stories. Where does [!@#$%^&*] get off saying the things she has?! I hope her implants melt.

The site with articles no longer exists, but I remember she really BASHED the SUNSET BEACH cast, and the experience overall. She tried to revamp herself as some sort of Hollywood Babe after BEACH ended. I hope she has been blacklisted altogether from the industry. She had very little range and hates soaps.

I remember one article I read went something along the lines of, "Which do you prefer: MALIBU SHORES(short-lived primetime Spelling Property from 1996) or SUNSET BEACH."

And she replied, "MALIBU. The people were much prettier on that show."

I know before BEACH ended, Ward had a HUGE legion of fans from the show. I hardly think any of them stuck with her after that.

Yeah, I read all that same stuff. She also said something about how she felt Sunset Beach kept her from getting roles on other shows because they dressed her to look "fat."

I don't remember exactly what she said, but she seemed to really frown on soaps. As if to say, "Ugh... let's not talk about that. I'm embarassed about that part of my career. Next subject, please!" She wasn't even subtle about it. It's flat out obvious that she was ashamed about being on a soap.

I think she's more like her psychob!tch character in "The In Crowd" than people realize.
