  1. I didn't mind the ep but that last segment was a hot bowl of ass.
  2. I agree with you about not wanting to force people to accept your business. I don't really understand the mindset behind that. If you don't want to take my money, fine. I'll find someone who does. That's what Yelp is for. For me the issue is that these laws are bad on their face. The "sincerely held beliefs" clause reminds me a lot of why I find "stand your ground" laws so noxious. It allows people to engage in damaging, disruptive behavior regardless of the reason, evidence or reality. Could a paramedic refuse to treat someone who was in an accident just because they're gay? Could a firefighter refuse to fight a fire at an abortion clinic? Could people refuse to serve Mormons because of their history of racism and plural marriage? Could I decide not to serve nuns or priests given my "sincerely held beliefs" about the way the Catholic Church treats women or because of its history of sexual abuse? Laws need to be based on behavior and actions whenever possible. Plus these laws removed the option to sue so they offer a level of protection to religious bigotry that other "sincerely held beliefs" don't get. They also set up a nasty catch-22 for businesses. If your global company - like say an airline or hotel chain - has a non-discrimination policy, this lets some low level employee spit in the face of your customers and set you up for all kinds of negative legal and financial consequences and leaves managers with no way to redress it. These are just bad laws based on hysteria and hatred.
  3. Rewatching has made me realize how much I've changed as a viewer in the last decade. Stuff that I used to find cute or intriguing (Brian's relationship with Michael) now seems really unhealthy while I have a new appreciation for characters I didn't really get into the first time around (Emmet, Deb). Of course the stuff I didn't like before now seems unbearable (all things Rage). One thing that has remained is my feeling that Ted is deeply, deeply mentally ill. I can't figure out whether this show is more satire, farce, or soap opera. It can veers from complete inanity (again, Rage) service to clunky self-indulgence (Hunter likes girls, argh!) to deeply affecting drama (Michael tells Brian he knows about the cancer). One thing that's cracking me up is how very, very bad the show was at hiding the fact that they shoot in Canada.
  4. Because that kind of behavior has been so healthy and productive for the Republicans? Purging people from the party because of lack of ideological purity is a right wing tactic. Sane people understand that a party can't function that way. What you call a "double standard" is really just the Democrats being more tolerant of diversity of thought. The fact that you see that as something to be criticized and purged speaks volumes.
  5. Interesting. I agree a little about liberals and bright shiny objects. Things are heating up here in Ohio on marriage equality because there's some serious division in strategy. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/24/us/politics/ohio-gay-marriage-push-divides-some-advocates.html I was talking to a friend about it last night. He's on the board of the local LGBT center. It was tough for me to look at him and say that I don't think a ballot initiative is a good idea because I've been planning his and his partner's wedding for ten years but there's just not the war chest for the type of fight we would have here and support is only at 50 percent.
  6. I loved Touched By An Angel. I'm still waiting for it to show up on Netflix or Hulu.
  7. So you post links to crackpot blogs and claim that they are spokespeople for the left yet a few pages back you wanted to pretend that Sarah Palin isn't a recognized voice for the right in spite of the fact that she's constantly on Fox News, speaks at Republican events and shills book after book. Do you see the hypocrisy in that? No. It proves that the opposition to the GOP's hate was stronger. If the GOP was opposed to hate they wouldn't float these bills to begin with.
  8. I just started season 4. I'd completely forgotten that the show got a new opening. It went from Happy!Gay!Boy!Dancers to that B&W 90210 ripoff.
  9. Please provide examples of these scare tactics. I've noticed that you like to accuse "the left" of doing and saying things yet provide no examples. And the Kansas legislature. And Idaho, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, Oklahoma, Hawaii and Mississippi legislatures. All those states have introduced these new Jim Crow laws. (Fortunately the one in Ohio got pulled today.) To say the Republican Party isn't dangerous for gays is to ignore the actions of Republicans in power all over this country. (Not just Republicans of course. The Ohio bill was sponsored by three Democrats along with 40 Republicans and believe me, I'm about to put my proverbial foot deep in the ass of those Dems.) The actions of the Arizona legislature are a perfect reflection of the GOP mainstream The irony is that the Arizona law says that someone can refuse service to anyone if it's because of sincerely held beliefs. Romney is probably opposing the bill because he knows that won't work out to well for Mormons. I just did. You seem to want to use the fact that these bills haven't been successful as proof of the GOP's intentions. I use the fact that they were introduced at all.
  10. It's a shame that after all the things McCain has done in his career, the thing he will be remembered for is unleashing Sarah Palin on the American people. I just keep wondering were all these bills are coming from. It's got to be from the same source. Normally I would think ALEC but there's no real profit component. I assume it's got to be from a handful of big money donors but I can't imagine who. The Kochs tend to lean more towards policies that screw the middle class and the environment. Who profits from these bills?
  11. No they don't. The fact that the bill even passed shows that those "left wing scare tactics" as you call them were 100 percent true. People thought that a Romney or McCain presidency would be dangerous for gays because the Republican Party is dangerous for gays and this is hard evidence of that. The only reason McCain or Romney are speaking out now is because, fortunately, it has become unprofitable to be homophobic. Frankly I hope Brewer signs the bill so we can make an example out of that state and make any other legislature think twice before trying to pass this Jim Crow nonsense.
  12. Natalie Hall (Colby #3, AMC) is on that new CW series Star Crossed and she is overacting her ass off.
  13. I'm aware. Granted, I haven't read the comics but I saw plenty of complaints even from people who did. What works on a comic book cover doesn't necessarily work on TV. I get that was a shoutout but now that they've done it I hope they move on and dress her appropriately.
  14. Apparently that was a shoutout to her character in the comics (which I haven't read). I hope it was just a one time thing and eventually they'll start dressing her appropriately. I'm going to reserve judgment on Darryl and Beth. After all, I never thought there would come a time I found Carl tolerable but that's all about Michonne.
  15. I just couldn't stop thinking about how ridiculous Rosita looked walking around in daisy dukes and midriff shirts. How stupid do you have to be to expose that much skin in a world where your priority is to not get bitten? When she started walking after Glenn it was like Zombie Apocalypse Fashion Week.
  16. Same. He was such a pathological narcissist. I finally noticed how is almost pathologically capable of letting other people get any attention. It's startling how many times we see characters talking about their problems only to have Brian make the whole conversation about himself. Watch how many times he comes into the diner, plops down in the booth and starts talking about himself regardless of the topic being discussed.
  17. It looks like a bunch of us are watching/re-watching QAF now that it's available on Netflix so it seemed a good idea to start a thread. I binge watched seasons one and two and just started S3. I may take a break because I find that I'm not enjoying the show as much as I did the first time I watched or more accurately, I'm seeing the flaws much more clearly now. I'd be very interested to hear the opinions of someone watching for the first time. (BTW there was briefly an old QAF thread on this board. I decided against bumping it. It seemed better to start a fresh one.)
  18. Two ex soapers for the price of one. Trevor St. John (OLTL) and Wendy Moniz (Dinah #1, GL) are working on a movie together: http://variety.com/2014/film/news/rachel-dratch-wendy-moniz-trevor-st-john-in-grief-of-others-1201109984/ I saw In The Family (the first movie TSJ did with Patrick Wang) and just loved it. It was one of those films that stayed in my head for weeks. I highly recommend it. A bit of trivia: Gina Tognoni was in In The Family with TSJ while WM played a mayor on OLTL on so there has to be some kind of massive GL/OLTL wormhole opening in in the soap verse.
  19. I've been convinced that Mariah's breast implants are filled with a mixture of saline and PCP.
  20. I checked that out yesterday. (I'm a big fan of Beth Riesgraf from Leverage.) I wasn't really feeling it but the quality is decent.
  21. Aww, look at him. Thanks for sharing, John.
  22. They do a LOT of Buffy shoutouts on The Crazy Ones. It's nice to see that she's found a way to make peace with that time in her life. I'm also thrilled to see Amanda Setton there with her. I'd written off OLTL looooong before Kim showed up. I saw maybe 60 seconds of that character in the process of checking out clips of JvD. But she's one of those former soap actors that I love seeing succeed because I think she's always put in the work and it showed even back then.
  23. This was another example of how ridiculous Stabler's absence is. I wish they'd just say he died or something because there is no way at all that he wouldn't have been in that courtroom to support Olivia. Or more likely he'd be visiting Lewis in jail making threats and screwing up the case. But to not even have him mentioned? Even if it's just Cragen saying that he spoke to Eliot's new captain and he's still undercover or something. But don't just pretend he never existed especially when they mention him on the stand. I wasn't expecting much from her appearance. This was all about Liv and Lewis. Her hair is gorgeous but I continue to be amazed at how the woman. doesn't. age.
  24. This. This is why the right wing can't be taken seriously Personally I don't care that Bill cheated. I don't care if anybody cheats. As long as you do what I put you in office to do then I don't care if you drop your whole paycheck on escorts and sex toys. But don't turn around and pretend to be the candidate of Christianity. Don't tell me how this country was founded on conservative Christian values then cut food stamps and unemployment benefits all while screwing around on your spouse. If the right-wing wants to play dueling douchebags, I'll take Bill Clinton over Mark Sanford and Newt Gingrich any day.
  25. Upon re-watch, I got a bit of an a-ha moment when Eleven started talking about how one minute we're here and the next we're gone "like breath on a mirror." It's like they were telling us outright how quickly it would happen. But like Clara, the audience was still in the process of saying goodbye.
