Knots Landing
I mean, it's pretty obvious CBS were trying to appeal to the Dallas audience with that one. Similar thing with how they marketed The Mississippi that held the post-Dallas slot after Falcon Crest ended early in season 2: When you actually read the summary of The Mississippi, it sounds more like your standard legal procedural in line of Matlock and similar shows rather than as exciting as the poster makes it sound. I'd imagine that a lot of posters would've tried to feed off the popularity of Dallas during this era.

ALL: End of an Era: Are Daytime Soaps Washing Away?
Well, I guess this is sort of an appropriate thread - but there's a trend with Netflix trying to do their shows / movies more "background" friendly: Of course, this is historically how soaps often functioned - background noise for hausfraus while going on about their business and sitting down to watch the good parts. I think this is another sign why Days keeps getting renewed, Amazon picked up Neighbours and CBS pushed through with Beyond the Gates. People want some sort of format they can dive in and out of.

"The Conners" Discussion Thread
I wonder what'll happen to Lecy post-Conners? She sort of got lost in the wilderness the first time around between the show and the comeback. I hope that doesn't happen again.

Knots Landing
To be honest, I think only Donna really "got" Abby and it shows that she had a lot of hand in the character pre-Latham/Lechowick. She nixed Abby being directly involved with kidnapping the twins and understood that Abby had to have *limits* to be a viable long-term character. I think Dallas and Dynasty were bad at understanding this with JR and Alexis respectively later on in the series. There's just no tension if a character will and is able to do anything while also never getting a comeuppance.

Dallas Discussion Thread
From memory, it was pretty much stale-mate between Sue Ellen and JR (due to him throwing Nicholas off the balcony / her shooting him in return) which led to charges being dropped and fueling her to do the pointless movie.

Knots Landing
It's odd, because looking aside from casting, the concept doesn't quite work. So Abby became Abby because she met this rich guy once, had her heart broken and then just marries Jeff and lives a boring suburban life? Huh? If anything, you'd think Abby's killer instinct would've kicked in sooner. I actually prefer the simple version of Abby being middle class, hating it and grabbed the first best chance to escape it. If anything, I think Olivia's storyline in season 11 was meant to be an Abby: Origins story until they nixed it.

Knots Landing
TBF, execs do dictate storyline ideas at times and might've specifically told them to do more "action" as it was getting more popular.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
I agree. It clearly had a good flow from Dallas. I guess you could reason they should've moved Falcon Crest to try out other shows, but realistically, they sort of did try out both Nurse and The Mississippi there and neither did well outside the timeslot. So they'd just move Falcon Crest (which would do significantly worse and probably be a middling performer in another slot) to replace it with... another prime time sudser compatible with Dallas? I think they did the right thing to keep FC there as I don't see what benefit moving it would've had.

Ratings from the 1990s
I missed a lot of the talk about the 1994-95 season, but it's always worthy to post the Vulture features of it from a decade ago: https://www.vulture.com/tags/1994-95-tv-week/ I think the A18-49 demographic ratings also paints a different picture from the regular Nielsen: As can be seen here, the youth skew of Fox's show was actually insane. Melrose Place was at #57 in the total ranking for the season, but forty places higher in the demographics, not far behind Beverly Hills 90210. Models Inc (#62) was unlucky to lose out getting a renewal considering Party of Five (#69) and New York Undercover (#60) did.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
It is worth mentioning that the lead-in (Caddy-shack) had a 12.2 rating - so people did specifically tune in to see Falcon Crest. It just wasn't in the same major numbers Dallas' did. And realistically - they probably realised that few shows could hold onto the Dallas audience as well as Falcon Crest did. They did try with The Mississippi in late spring 1983 when Falcon Crest still only had 22 episodes and it didn't do as well as FC. I guess they could've moved FC off Fridays to some other night and had it as a mid-performer (that probably wouldn't have lasted nine seasons, I agree), but why?

I really dislike intros with lyrics in general, but yes, the images and the feelings they provoke are absolutely wonderful. A gothic soap opera with supernatural overtures. Which is why the show itself was so disappointing lol. I also loved Sunset Beach's first intro, though it was very 90s Aaron Spelling prime time soap opera.

Primetime Soaps
Four Corners pops up now and again on YouTube. It was also re-edited into a mini series and aired as Homestead in Europe, though I'm not sure if they bothered to wrap up the series. I think if it's ever going to get an official release, I'd assume the re-cut version is the one that might pop up.

The Doctors Discussion Thread
I'm happy they're setting up a FAST channel - I'll admit that I sort of gave up watching this when the announcement about the last two years being "missing" / wiped came. I'm not sure if I want to invest countless hours in watching something that I can't complete 'til the end. I might tune into a FAST channel though as it's less investment.

BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
If I'm being fair, there seemed to be a push towards a "serious" drama tone (think thirtysomething, China Beach, "sandcastle opening" for Knots, Homefront) after Dallas, Dynasty etc started fizzling. So I think they tried to tap into that trend with the theme, which of course ended up not representing the content of the show at all. It makes me wonder if they're going to try and do something like Succession or Yellowstone-esque for BTG lol

BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
I'm actually not expecting much visually from the opening - I think those sort of cheesy cast shots with them turning (or showing off bling) is probably what will be used. I'm more interested in the tune itself - I want it to be catchy and distinct to the show. Yet I'll admit I have no idea how I even want it to sound beyond that.

There's zero need for them to license a song when they can just hire someone to compose a theme lol. Looking at the promo I would assume the shots of the cast are from the intro. So that makes me think it'll have a 30-40 sec intro theme to make it gel well with the two other soaps. But both Y&Rs and B&Bs theme are so different and obviously influenced from their respective eras. I'm just not sure what a soap theme would sound like in 2025.

Murder, She Wrote
There's just no way they'll be able to resist making a "clever" meta reference to Jessica's friends dying (even though it makes no sense in the context of a movie).

Nice to see a teaser, though bar the outdoor scenes (which I doubt will last, or will be common beyond the first few episodes) I don't think it exactly looks that much more high budget and out place with the other CBS soaps (which it shouldn't anyway). The mansion living area set looks nice, though the office looked a bit cramped which is to be expected. Of course we can't say anything about the writing, which will be the most important factor here. I just hope they'll roll out the characters gradually rather than trying to introduce everyone too soon.
