"The Conners" Discussion Thread
So Peg Bundy and Dan Conner are supposed to be the same age? She's definitely holding up better... Was that a one-off by Katey? I don't think Dan should be having any romance this season.Way too soon. The Jackie story was so ridiculous it was funny and everything else was humming along nicely. And no DJ and Geena!

I wonder what might have happened had Jim Reilly done an Irna Phillips and deserted his creation. Maybe with other writers Passions could have achieved its potential.

Will & Grace Revival
The script really let them down this week. It always falters when the premise is not strong. Matt Bomer's character attracted to Will? Will making a fool of himself over some guy? Had it been Jack trying to interest and fool him by acting smart, that would have worked. McCormack's delivery is woeful.

The Clear Horizon
Radio Daily Feb 62 Producer Sees Male Trend In Daytime Drama Series Charles Polachek, producer of CBS-TV's "Th e Clear Horizon," which returns Feb. 26 because of viewer's letters, believes the demands of TV will dictate more story emphasis on m en in daytime drama s than radio ever did. "Excitement, action, melodrama —all are more successful on TV than they were on radio. So I think the trend in TV daytime drama will be more and more toward men than it was in radio, " he said. Behind the TV camera since 1945, Polachek notes that he has four times as much material to worry about as a daytime drama producer than the producer of a weekly half-ho r series But he calls his job simpler because he can operate "on a more established basis." "We have a basic cast, the same locale, the same settings. At a production meeting weekly , we discuss our problems. In many cases, three words take care of a description of a set. I just say 'Selby living room' and our crew knows exactly what we will shoot. It is t h e same for many other sets. We have done them all before. " Polachek had previously worked on Edge of Night and other shows in the 50's, but CH seems to be his last credit.

Another ep with Geena getting one line. DJ was in the kitchen and didn't even speak! I found the treatment of the lesbian couple a little odd. They didn't come across as very likeable to me and the whole' we want your baby thing' came off as cold and businesslike.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I got the sense from what Ruth wrote was that the GL role was hers from the outset but Irna (in her usual fashion) wanted things her way. So her first day as an anonymous nurse became Nurse Janet Johnson in the following episodes. As posted, many other actresses were finding movie roles hard to come by and accepted TV roles in NY as Ruth had done. It was just that Ruth had that connection with P&G that the soap role happened. Her financial situation was a factor at the time. Maybe other actresses had made more money and could be choosier with roles.

i think when Pheobe Dorin was brought in, the idea was to have the audience get used to her before having any big story. But ratings were dropping. Joel Kane had been Irna's replacement before Winifred Wolfe took over. Maybe the feeling was that Rosemary was irreplaceable and Penny was written out. Irna returned in Jan 72 but I wonder if she was involved earlier and wanted Pheobe/Penny out?

Was Irma ever seen? At what point was it established that Grandpa had a ladyfriend? I have read that when the show went to an hour Santos Ortega was made recurring and seldom seen, or married and written out?

Yes Penny at the end would have been a lovely touch. I wonder if there was any thought/reaching out when Santos Ortega/Grandpa Hughes passed awayin 75? Penny would surely have wanted to be there. Maybe at that point Rosemary was still anti ATWT...

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
In her book Ruth Warrick talks about her first soap role as Janet on TGL. After a fairly successful movie career, roles were drying up and she moved to NY and live primetime TV (various anthology shows) She met up with an old friend who now worked for P&G who pointed out that once she had appeared on the various programs that would be it for the season, and advised her to try daytime. She agreed and then Irna asked that she appear as an under 5 nurse .Ruth said she could do a screen test or Irna could watch her movies but Ms Phillips insisted she wanted to see Ruth on the show to gauge how she would fit in. Ruth agreed to the small role and got the role of Janet.

" I also find it odd that you have used a white person's photo as your avatar which makes me wonder if you want to be white. I've never encountered that before. I'm used to black people who are proud of their heritage and do not see it as one wrapped up in victimization and bigotry at nearly every turn." Maybe DD used the Sharon Case avatar because she was amused by the geeky 90's look? Really Jarrod - deal with your demons...

All My Children Tribute Thread
Just finished reading Ruth Warrick's 'Confessions of Pheobe Tyler' and thought I'd share a few tidbits. Ruth was out of work after Peyton Place and was having her annual lunch with friend Rosemary Prinz, who told her she was being courted by Agnes Nixon for a new show. Ruth reached out and asked for a role. Agnes said the only thing suitable was a grandmother part and Ruth convinced her she could play the grandmother to an older teen. Ruth said the money was not great, but she accepted on the proviso that she have a full year contract. James Karen was dropped as Linc#1 because he looked too old to be Pheobe's son. Ruth doesn't say, but I think he may have been cast before her and their original plan was for someone older looking as Pheobe. Paul Dumont was dropped because his French Canadian accent kept coming through. Karen Lynn Gorney left for LA but hated the lifestyle. Second time around she was frustrated by Tara and the final straw was when she recited a poem on air in a sing song voice, not as intended. She left 'by mutual agreement' Chris Hubbell Chuck #2 wasn't up to performing live on tape so was dropped. The only cast member she really slammed was Paul Gleason (David Thornton) who she alluded to being disruptive on the set.
