I think Goutman's mindset about soaps echoed those of the majority of execs at that time. He came to soaps as an actor in the late 70's and early 80's and then moved on to directing.That was a time when soaps underwent a dramatic change in direction (thanks Gloria!) and he was part of that. Execs saw soaps as continuing story that needed action and drama during sweeps to keep the dollars coming in. If that meant evil twins and clones - so be it. To get young women, they believed you needed young characters and 'hot couples' The generational aspect and slow unravelling of stories was tossed aside. I recall an interview with Goutman where he clicked through channels saying that's what viewers did now and only something eye catching would hold them. So soaps went for big moments to try and entice them to stay. It was an interesting philosophy but numbers and engagement kept dropping, so they doubled down...

I never knew that John Larkin (Perry Mason on radio) appeared on TV's Perry Mason with Raymond Burr in 1962. Wonder if that was mentioned as a publicity angle? John played Mike Karr when Perry Mason was re-imagined as Edge of Night.

Add Robin Amos to the list. His/her name is on a July 1980 script. IMDB credits them with SFT and GL in the early 80's. Maybe Bill was trying out different writers for the expansion.

I wonder if Rosemary was ever asked to return in the 70's and early 80's? Would she have been willing to return when Grandpa Hughes passed away for example?

Days initial ratings were low so I guess they felt changes had to be made. The initial stories were centered on Marie and her triangle with father and son Craig and Tony. Julie was troubled and hooked up with David Martin. Tom was involved in a malpractice suit and then some stuff about poisoned water supply that pitched Mickey against Tom. Bill Bell brought in Laura to set up Laura/Bill/Mickey and the Susan/Julie/David triangle.
