Radio Soap Opera Discussion
KITTY KEENE, INC. (1937-41, CBS, Mutual) 15-minute episodes Premiere: September 1937 Final episode: April 1941 Writers: Walter K. Norman, Gunnar Hjerstedt Starring Beverly Younger (later Gail Henshaw and Fran Carlon) as KITTY KEENE The star of the show, though, was KITTY KEENE, an “ex-Ziegfeld Follies gal” who started her own detective business. Of course, since this was a soap, it took her umpteen weeks to solve each crime, but they weren’t just “lady stuff”–she regularly faced off against kidnapers, blackmailers and murderers. Kitty still beautiful, is the mother of a charming daughter, Jill, and the wife of Charles Williams, former newspaperman. Jill is married to Bob Jones, lieutenant of detectives. The daughter is a mother too. Tiny Miss Jones is Kit, Junior. Star of the show is Gail Henshaw, a young actress who forgot to count 10 during a quarrel with her fiance two years ago. Gail handed Robert Hughes her engagement ring - and the mitten - and headed for Chicago by plane. Gail was still in a huff when she landed, so, without even unpacking she marched over to NBC studios in the Merchandise Mart to ask for a lob. A few months later she was Kitty Keene. The scrap? That came out all right, too. Hughes lingeied in New York a month after Gail left;then he took a tip from Young Lochinvar, reversed Young L's route and headed west. Miss Henshaw became Mrs. Robert Hughes on Christmas Eve, 1938. Gail is that rara avis, a native New Yorker; she was born in Gotham August 8, 1912. She attended St. Agatha elementary and high school, went to Wellesley for a couple of years and then switched to the American Academy of Dramatic art, from which she graudated in 1933. At Wellesley Gail not only starred in dramatics, she directed campus plays, was in the choir, gave a hand to the crew and played basketball. Back in 1936, Gail was in stock in New York when a fellow player begged her to help him out on a hurry -up replacement in a dramatic presentation on a local station. She stayed two years, graduating to the networks. Current episodes in the serial deal with Kitty's problems as manager of "The Modern Woman ", a job which has estranged her unemployed husband and driven him to New York a n d consolation in the charms of Norma Vernack, a Javanese dancer. Further complications are stirred up by Kitty's decision to move to an elaborate apartment "on the other side of town" and taking the young Joneses with her. The move goes to Jill's head and Bob finds he doesn't fit in. A friend of Kitty's employer, adds to the situation by showing an interest in Kitty. The show is produced for the agency by Frank Dane, director and character actor who created the role of detective "Never -Fail" Hendricks for the Story of Mary Marlin. Dan Donaldson announces the serial and Clinton Stanley does production for NBC.

YR new intro!
The 88-2000 opening was hardly groundbreaking at the time, just some poses against a white background. I recall a kind of glittery effect in the early days that was a little chintzy. But it was the first major change and introduced the new logo. I do like the idea of Victor placing the necklace on Nikki- especially as the show has her enthralled when he gifts her with jewelry, but I wonder Eric would go along with it -in terms of sharing the screen time with Melody.

Eric Braeden drags Eva Longoria for her comments about working in daytime
I recall a kinda similar situation when Melissa George was promoting a primetime US series she had landed and when interviewed back in Australia, got pissed off when they showed a Home & Away clip and wanted her to talk about that. She was given a villain narrative along the lines of 'how dare she forget where she started, ungrateteful beyotch 'etc but I could see her side also. She could have gone along with it but I guess felt she had acheived something and didn't want/need to be reminded of her soap stint.

YR: new set
Makes me think that the old GCAC is being used for this week only and the lounge will be a new meeting place replacing the ill conceived and ugly Glam Club.

Chelsea and Daniel in an empty CL discussing Omega Sphere- is anyone the slightest bit interested on any level? Nice to see some extras at the GCAC. If only the budget would allow for it on a regular basis. And so far the women look decently dressed for once.Much better than in real life at the 50th party. Disgrace that Mariah and Tessa are not there. Devon in that mask....

YR new intro!
The current opening was pretty cheap also. The font was basic and some shots (esp MTS) were very unflattering. The women got diamonds and champagne in the background but the guys got nothing. And the background shots were basically the same as foreground(outfits and poses) I agree the EB wink is good.

YR spoiler
We've seen spoiler pics of a Phyllis memorial. The trouble with this is, like all of Griffiths plots, there might be a kernel of a good idea but there are way too many holes and inconsistencies. And the end result will be people villifying Phyllis for a while and then it will all be forgotten.

YR new intro!
Good point. Maybe instead of a generic skyline , as the actors are shown, the background reflects their characters home or work. eg clip of Nikki in the living room, Abby at Society, Devon at the penthouse, Sharon at CL etc That might become dated, especially at the rate that characters change jobs and you have the issue of characters that don't have a home or workplace set. What do you think?

The Young and the Restless: March 2023 Discussion Thread
Veronica seems thrilled to be back. In SOD she played tribute to Marguerite for establishing the character of Mamie which was a classy move. It would be great to have her back as a sounding board for various characters. The Abbott family’s formerand much-cherished housekeeper Mamie Johnson, returns for a visit this week, which means her portrayer,Veronica Redd, is back, too. “My first reaction was one of relief,” shares the actress of getting the invitation to be a part of the show’s golden anniversary celebration. “It was reassuring to know that my role was impactful enough to be revisited. I am truly honored that[ExecutiveProducer/Head Writer] Josh Griffith thought it was imperative that Mamie return at this time of such momentous celebration. I felt a great sense of pride on behalf of my predecessor, Marguerite Ray. She established the character and what she created is still significant so many decades later. This is as much of a testament to her talent and skill as it may be considered to be mine. I am standing tall on her substantial shoulders.” Redd shares that she was thrilled to reunite with her former co-stars. “Peter Bergman [Jack], Beth Maitland[Traci], Eileen Davidson [Ashley] and last, but certainly not least, my favorite ‘archenemy’ of all time, Jess Walton[Jill], pretty much greeted me with the same generosity and enthusiasm, as did their characters, when seeing Mamie for the first time in so many years,” she enthuses. “I was also so moved when both Sharon Case [Sharon] and Joshua Morrow [Nick] individually approached me with genuine joy at seeing me again after so long. Even though I never had scenes with either of them, they had memories of me from when they first started on the show as very young actors. The other person whose personal greeting stood out to me was Michelle Stafford [Phyllis]. Like a lot of the women on the show, that girl is a heck of an actress! I love her work!”

YR new intro!
The skyline is unnecessary but I guess it fits with Josh Griffith's (crappy) notion of big corporate battles. The couple walking is a good concept but the framing/pacing looks looks wrong. Font looks dated. Like the last opening some of the shots aren't very flattering. We need to see our people looking their best. It's a change from the last opening but is it an improvement? They should have incorporated ideas from the various openings. Start with Y&R logo (80's) being drawn -go with b&W sketches (70's/80's) turning into the color glamour shots ,maybe against a billowing background(2000's) Finish with the couple walking (2010's)

Y&R - Returns for 50th Anniversary revealed
Yes, Fenmore's has stores across the U.S. and internationally. Probably one of the most successful department stores in the world. And the beauty of it is that it practically runs itself. Lauren has occasional meetings at cafes and restaurants... My impression when it was first introduced in the 80's, was that Fenmore's was a local upmarket mid west department chain with a few stores. A pity that it was never taken seriously as there would have been a lot of opportunity for business stories with all the upheavals in retail in the past few years.

The Young and the Restless: March 2023 Discussion Thread
Another thought I had re Doug is perhaps he is upset/hurt that fellow castmates did not reach out to him in support. I'm sure he wouldn't expect them to go to bat for him (although Eric Braeden did earlier) but maybe a tweet or message to say he was missed or hope to see him again... Pure speculation, just based on what I have seen happen in workplaces when somebody leaves under a cloud in some way. Supposed friends/colleagues move on quickly.

Supposedly the Abbott home (from 2017) I defy anyone to come up with a floorplan of the Abbott residence. And the chancellor estate has these security gates? How come anyone could just rock up to the front door?

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
Thanks also. Not Marlena related, but the summary where Tommy talked about his situation answered a question I always had as to whether the show addressed that two of the Horton sons had experienced amnesia. Bill was stretching credibility there by repeating a storyline a few years later. But he got away with it.

Y&R 50th party for cast, crew, alumni
I think it's pretty obvious why Roberta Leighton hasn't returned. You have to wonder how she allowed it. I always wonder what these ex soap actors do for a living. She hasn't worked as an actress in years. , Tracey and Jennifer better hustle back to their street corner before some other girls move in . Melody's dress is OK but Victoria's getup is very Endora from Bewitched.

Eric Braeden drags Eva Longoria for her comments about working in daytime
Team Eva on this one. Firstly springing the soap clip . Intentionally choosing a scene to underline the narrative that soaps are ridiculous. It hardly showed Eva at all -there would have been plenty of scenes that would have shown her in a better light. So she had aright to be embarassed. Then the story about having another job made sense to me. In fact maybe newbie soap actors should take a leaf and have other stuff on the go to ensure some financial security. I don't think she was putting the show down, just acknowledging it was better to keep things separate. Eric needs to put a pin in it. Considering that for the past few years he has been mumbling and stumbling ,reading his lines off menus, phones etc. He's damn lucky to still be a working actor. I'm sure that as a younger actor he would have called out such an older actor reading lines that way. He totally overreacted to what she said. Didn't he go off a few years back at some actor from 'How I Met Your Mother"? And I don't recall Robert de Niro starting on soaps...

The Young and the Restless: March 2023 Discussion Thread
Victoria had plenty of years when she was bitter about the show and her treatment. She seems to have finally moved on. Doug is obviously still at that earlier stage ,after only a few years. Maybe in time he too will move on. He says that he is still on good terms with CBS and Josh, so it seems Sony is the problem.

That is really odd that they weren't there. Wonder what the story is? Would have been nice for Corbin Bernsen to appear as atribute to his mom.
