Soap Opera Cast Lists and Character Guides- Cancelled and Current
From what I can find, Tim was datie Evie but got a job offer out of town that was too good to pass up and left in Nov 76. No mention of Pam and no reason I could see that a marriage would be mentioned later. I just checked Soap Central and there is an entry stating Evie left town and Pam and Tim were married. Not so.This is not the first false entry I have come across at that site. Someone takes delight at posting false info.

That whole stint is shrouded in mystery. Marland didn't get on air credit from what I can gather and there was no official announcement at the time in contrast to 1980 when there was big to do about the Dobsons going to ATWT and Marland to GL. It seems it was some sort of caretaking arrangement as Marland made no major cast or story changes. So it seems the plan was for him to take on GL and perhaps there were issues with the Dobsons moving to ATWT sooner so he was given the ATWT stint. Who knows?

No Travis was involved with Victoria and his ex Michelle turned up who knew Ashley. Once Sally arrived he disappeared immediately w/o an exit scene. Rather than Cane having drunk sex with Juliet. I would have had an old flame of his arrive searching for her teen daughter who has discovered Cane is her father. She has gone missing after hooking up online with someone claiming he would help her locate her dad. Cane/Lily's world turned upside down as they have to help this woman. Neil could become involved with her and when the girl is found she could create more trouble for Cane/Lily as well as getting involved with Reed, thus negating the need for the ridiculous twins SORASING.

How would you describe your working relationship with Head Writer Sally Sussman? Young: Oh, it’s great! It’s total trust. We are similar in a way; we’ve both been immersed in our soaps, but we’ve also got a lot of differences and that’s always good because you could both bring strengths to the table. There’s a mutual respect, there’s no politicking between us. Both of us just care passionately about making the best show possible, and we both like to talk and we both like to have a laugh, so that’s good, isn’t it? We talk about the vision of the show, and it’s our vision now, and hopefully it’s one that the fans will agree with. Not all of them will, but I hope enough of them will say, “Oh, this is fun, this is great.” The fans have got a hell of a Christmas and New Year coming up, and they’re in for a treat when Sally’s stuff hits. I think that takes us through the next phase in the life of the show. What have you learned from your past efforts that you’re incorporating now? Young: I think the big thing that I’ve learned over the years is that these shows are huge machines and you have to be very visible and accessible to the whole team in front of and behind the camera. You have to be the principal of the school one day, and keeping everyone to the rules, but you also have to constantly engage and inspire people to give their best creatively What can you tease about what’s coming up? Young: Well, there’s some really cool twists and turns, quite unexpected ones, coming up in the Sharon, Dylan and Nick triangle, which is good fun. The GC BUZZ set has been very successful for us; the people have responded very well to us giving Hilary and Devon a whole new journey, and Mariah getting involved with that. We can do stories that reflect the way we watch TV now and we watch gossip shows, and the way media is a part of our lives. The GC BUZZ story can reflect that. We’ve got a good twist with Victoria and Travis. Travis’s past is just about to come in and hit them over the head. I can’t say too much about that right now, but you won’t see that one coming. And you’ve got Jack on his new journey going back to the old Jack. He’s not going to get messed with, he’s much tougher, much colder. So he’s really going to be driven to destroying all his competitors, including Victor. He’s going to try to take down everyone, including his brother, because his brother’s working for Victoria’s company, but under the same roof, and that’s going to give us lots of problems. Expect lots of fireworks, I can definitely promise that. I know Y&R is the No. 1 show, but if there are people who have tuned out, what would you tell them is the reason they should tune in again? Young: I would say, “Come back and just try an episode and see the changes, and where the show is going, the new characters that are coming in and the new stories.” We have got some great new characters coming in, but we’re also going to elevate a lot of the legacy characters. I think that a lot of the fans who may have tuned out are going to be very pleasantly surprised, particularly when Sally’s influence comes to bear because she goes back years with this show, and Kay Alden [story consultant] is now involved. The three of us have been talking a lot about how to respect and celebrate the past as well as move the show forward. So I think those people who wandered off will come back and want to stick around They needed to drop GC Buzz immediately. What was that supposed to be? An internet show, or syn dicated? Shown locally, or nationally? Why would anyone be interested in what's happening in Genoa City? I hate it when soaps try to have it both ways. When it suits the Newmans,Abbotts etc are well known across the country and at other times quite the opposite. Mal should have dialed back as much as possible on the mega rich aspect because it was out of date anyway and the show didn't have the budget to depict that lifestyle. Most of Sally's stories were duds. Scott Grainger return, Jack/Nikki revisit, Juliet/Cane, SORASING of Charlie/Mattie etc

It might have been interesting as a part of the build up Sharon hears that Grace has died in an acciden (actually caused by Cameron) Cue Nick and Sharon talking about Grace to remind old viewers , educate new viewers with a few flashbacks thrown in. Then Sharon gets a visit from a friend/partner whatever of Grace who says she mentioned Sharon's name before dying. Sharon puzzles about what it could mean...

That was one of the more plot driven stories that Lemay chose (was pressured to?) write . It worked for the ratings and was AW's last successful period. But once it was over, there was no fall out and ratings began to drop. I think it worked because it was unexpected. Unlike other shows eg Search, where there was an annual murder story, Lemay had shied away so it really had an impact.

No definitely Alan Castner mentions the role in a Broadway resume. That's a bit of a mystery as the other roles for Tom Cannon were in the 80's so seems like a different actor. Would Anthony Cannon be doing what seems like a bit part in 1969?

You're probably right. Speaker of the Chancellor mansion, the first change occurred when the aspect changed from the '4th wall' now facing the entrance doors to the living room, rather than the fireplace. Don't know why that change was made but I'm fairly sure it was around the time that Billy and Chloe were married. Then when Billy redecorated in blue, the entire set was rebuilt and shrunk as well as some structural changes. Then came the restoration of the yellow paintwork and a similar wallpaper on the stairway, but otherwise everything else was new. I believe a couple of original pieces were placed in the bookcases. ATM the Chancellor living room has not been seen for months. Bit like the GCAC it could return.

More from Mal You are making wardrobe changes, as well. What is your ideal look for the show? Young: This is supposed to be a very rich world and we enjoy the insight into the world of these characters who live these amazing lives in Genoa City. I think the wardrobe can say so much about the characters before they even open their mouths. I felt Devon was always in a suit, just looking like every other guy in the show, but you should be able to walk into our wardrobe department and see all the costumes hanging up and tell me who that character is, because they say as much as the script says, probably more because it’s visual. So Devon’s had a bit of an overhaul. We’ve used the GC BUZZ story and his new venture to take him into a much cooler, rarified world of show biz, and he’s looking great. And I’ve talked to [portrayer Bryton James] about bringing in his own taste to Devon, and the same with Hilary [Mishael Morgan], now that she’s embarking on this new adventure. * Devon went more casual but the clothes appeared very generic, not high end labels. Just black T shirts and hoodies. Hilary usually looked good but a lot of her stuff seemed similar to what Phyllis and Victoria would wear. And GC Buzz should have been quickly dropped. As far as the sets, was the restoration of the Chancellor mansion any response to fan outcry or was that something you wanted to do? Young: It’s a funny one, that. We’re working so far ahead of what the fans are seeing. We do obviously listen, and I particularly do to the fans all the time— I want to know what their responses are — but it’s usually to what you’ve already done, not what you’re just about to do. With this particular change in the Chancellor mansion, we decided we wanted to bring Jill back, and Jess [Walton] was available and it worked out great. I adore her and the fans do, and she’s so good and so inventive. She comes into a scene with all this energy, which is just infectious. And, as with all the best stories, they’re the ones written by the character, because we all sat in a meeting and went, “Jill would hate this house!” And we were picturing, “Well, there’s the story. She makes him change it. It will be hilarious but it will be real.” And it coincided with the fan outcry, because by that point they were seeing it on the air. But we just allowed the fictional character of Jill to make that decision for us, funnily enough. *some spin there from Mal. Wasn't it thatJFP remade that set and them Angelica McDaniel saw it and demanded it be changed back?

What did you think was working well? Young: Actors. That was the first thing that attracted me to the show when I was first asked to be involved. I think we’re blessed with a hell of an ensemble of quality performers giving really high-class performances. Really great people who just want to be challenged all the time. They love it when I talk to them and give them notes and talk about their characters and push them into areas that they might feel uncomfortable in. Speaking of your cast, were there characters that you felt needed storyline attention? Young: There were some that from the moment I really started to watch the show in detail, I felt were being underserved and were just not on-screen enough. Ashley [Eileen Davidson], I adore. I just think, “What a great character, what a great actress portraying her. She can do comedy, she can do heavy, she can do everything! Romance!” And I was frustrated about that, so she needed attention. And Mariah [Camryn Grimes]. Big fan. She’s one of those great performers who sometimes can kind of be underrated or undervalued by the audience, who kind of think, “Oh,it’s just Mariah.” She’s brilliant in this latest storyline with the baby; she turns in some quite amazing performances and then in the next scene does pure comedy! She’s terrific. I felt she was really underutilized. So, I think those two, mainly. * Sure the rest of the cast were thrilled that he singled out just two. Way to endear the cast to you Mal! Interestingly Eileen left under his watch and the vibe I got was that she wasn't happy with the story for Ashley. Mal said something along the lines that it was a short break and Eileen reiterated that she wouldn't be back. As soon as Mal left Eileen began reappearing. I'm sure Eric loved Mal talking and giving notes about his portrayal. Mal did try to move away from Victor the omnipotent and Eric no likey.

SOD November 2016 Mal Young interview. This is just as Sally joined, and according to her, it was a quick entry and she didn't have any major story plans. I think that is reflected in Mal's answers as he doesn't have much to say about upcoming storylines. I'm going to post in sections to give posters time to read and(hopefully)respond. Mal eventually took over as headwriter and I don't think he was too enamored at having to accommodate Sally. How would you describe your overall vision for Y&R? Mal Young: My overall vision is to keep it fresh, never rest on our laurels. My mantra is, “What is good is today’s show,” and the minute the viewers watch that, it goes into the history archives and they’re saying, “But what next? And what’s next?” And that’s our job, to keep the viewers guessing and enthralled and entertained and surprised. Not just to do what everyone thinks a soap should do, and fall into the same old tropes. I think our job is to constantly question where we’re going with the show and keep it feeling contemporary and exciting and entertaining. I also want it to get a better mix of the real, heavy drama and humor. Each week, I show all the heads of departments some tapes of the show, just so that we, as a group, all sit and look at what we’re doing. Celebrate some high points, and maybe say, “Well, what can we do better?” Recently, I showed them a whole collection of clips of Billy and Phyllis. I said to everyone, “This was a master class in rom-com,” and it brings in a different tone to the show. I don’t think humor should feel forced or as a gag; I think it should come out of character, and those two actors did that so well, I thought. So that’s kind of my vision. And it’s a continuing one. When you took over as executive producer, what were your first steps? Young: Well, I don’t think you can suddenly do a quick, sharp turn. You have to respect the fact that you’re inheriting a huge legacy of a show that goes back all these years, but also the more immediate stories that were already underway and styles of the show. So you have to do some things slightly, gradually. Visually, the quickest thing I tried to do, which seems to have had a good impact, was to introduce more exteriors and heighten the production values. This was a very quick way of putting your own stamp on a show visually, so I changed the style of the way we shoot it and the fans seem to be responding very positively to this. There’s some nice camera work and lighting, but the exteriors, I think, really made the show feel bigger, and really opened up the world of Genoa City. It felt too enclosed for me. We’re going to keep that going now and keep developing the look of the show. What areas did you think needed some work? Young: I think the lack of humor, maybe, the pace, the direction. When I looked at the history of Y&R, I realized that it was the first to do certain things, like it was the first to go to full HD, so it was leading the way technically, as well as in its storytelling, in its characters, in its acting and in the types of stories that it would do. So, I felt that I wanted us to keep that tradition going and to be at the forefront so that we would remain No. 1 and be seen as the market leader. That’s why I brought in a lot more location shooting, to make the show look as slick as possible, and to not look like any of the other shows, so that you could be flipping through the networks and you would know, “Oh, this is Y&R.” * I don't recall there being much location shooting in 2017. Can anyone remember? I do recall they used the studio for some locations day to day. Also, can't recall any noticeable improvement in production values. Maybe Mal was stymied by budget cuts. As for Billy/Phyllis as a master class in romcom ...not sure I agree. I thought they were a compromised couple from the outset considering the circumstances that brought them together.

GH: Classic Thread
GH SOD review from 2016 Flip the calendar back a year, and you’d come across a very different GH. Indeed, May 2015 saw the advent of several story strands that proved controversial at best and outright unpopular at worst: Elizabeth’s decision to conceal “Jake’s” identity, Ava’s re-entry as “Denise DeMuccio”, Carlos’s brutal murder of Duke and Anna gunning down Carlos in retaliation, Nikolas ordering a hit on Hayden. A few months later, a new co-head-writing team was announced, and the material of Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante began airing in October. The show does feel like it’s in transition, as the scribes are still contending with stories not of their own creation (like the tug-of-war between Sonny and Ava over Avery) — and yet, it has a decidedly different feel under the new regime. Here, Digest gives the hospital a checkup. Duty Calls: Animating GH’s workforce was a top priority for its new scribes, andthe results have been fantastic. The titular hospital was badly in need of an uptick in staff, which it got in the form of nuDrs. Andre, Griffin, Mayes and Finn, plus Franco’s reinstatement as art therapist. As a result, stories are once again taking place in the hospital, like Tracy’s health crisis, a stellar showcase for the beloved Quartermaines that was enhanced by the contrasting perspectives of her doctors —idealistic Griffin, sourpuss Mayes, offbeat Finn. The PCPD is also popping, courtesy of fiery Commissioner Jordan, shady DA Paul, kickass special investigator Anna, and do-right cops Dante, Nathan and Valerie. Resurrecting Crimson via Dillon, Maxie and Nina was an inspired choice, giving all three characters new purpose. Equally refreshing is how much those in the mafia sphere seem to be questioning their chosen/inherited lifestyle. We Got The Beats: Altman and Passanante heard fans who complained about GH skipping over important emotional beats loud and clear. Their renewed focus on P.C. citizens talking to one another about the things that matter to them (sexually confused Kristina’s confessionals to her sisters and mom; the Corinthoses wrestling with how best to handle and support bipolar Morgan;Anna’s continued mourning for Duke) has yielded top-notch drama — and better defined characters. Shining Stars: From powerhouse veterans like Finola Hughes (Anna) to charismatic newbies like Donnell Turner (Curtis), the cast rocks. ’Nuff said. Mystery Tour: Our fingers are crossed that the mystery of Helena’s bequeathal to Laura will give Genie Francis some strong material to sink her teeth into — and wherever it’s leading, we hope it’s more rewarding than the reveal that Hayden is Rachel Berlin, a character with no ties to Port Charles (except for the hastily constructed one of her Bernie Madoff-esque dad draining Scotty’s fortune). This felt like a real missed opportunity, especially considering that Hayden could have been a Quartermaine (Jimmy Lee Holt’s kid, perhaps?), a Baldwin (Serena with anassumed identity and an ax to grind?), a Webber (Liz’s surprise sis?), etc. Which leads us to.... Family Matters: There are many people and circumstances to blame for this going back many years and creative regimes, but the fact that there are as many, say, Jeromes on the canvas as there are, say, Quartermaines continues to feel like a real problem on this show, creating a feeling of disconnection from its own history. However, bringing back Wally Kurth’s Ned and establishing Jason’s pull toward the Q fold are supershrewd moves in the right direction. Age Old Question: We finally cottoned to the character of Kiki, it’s a true boon to GH to have Lexi Ainsworth back as Kristina, and Bryan Craig is slaying it as bipolar Morgan ... but for the most part, the show’s “younger set” consists of characters who were graduating from high school a decade ago. We’re all for focusing on vets, but the lack of teens on the show does make us question where the next generation of heroes, heroines and supercouples is going to come from. With so many players to juggle, some get lost in the shuffle, ranging from full-fledged disappearing acts (Rosalie, we hardly knew ye!) to the veritable vanishing of vets like Ric and Lucy (both of whom, happily, are now back in the mix) to the short shrift given to likable folks like Felix (he of the off-camera boyfriend), TJ, Lucas and Brad. We give a similar finger-wag to story points that were introduced only to lead to a whole lotta nowhere (yes, we’re still sore about the unknown contents of Luke’s goodbye letter to Laura, and wonder if Monica is still dating that judge, etc.). Those who missed the slice-of-life style of storytelling GH was once known for will find plenty to love these days, with some solid surprises thrown in for good measure (what, you thought Michael Easton’s new character was going to love lizards?). The show feels like it’s in caring hands, and is trending in the right direction.
