I totally agree with this fair analysis as well. Not to mention Bea had left Charley as the executor of her will which was…odd lol. Maybe if Sheila Kelley had came in as something like a new character who was revealed to be their only fam or cousin or a step sister via Truman it could’ve worked better or something idk. Season 5 really did a lot of damage to the show. The show notably also recast Reed for the final season and it also destroyed Reed’s character as well inexplicably, which also made zero complete sense after finally getting Kirby ready to be a dad.

Falcon Crest
@kalbir Another Y&R connection I actually totally failed to notice lol. I decided to take a break from watching Knots on Plex and noticed the actual Primetime Soaps Channel was running Season 5 eps of Falcon Crest (post Apollonia thankfully!) Lo and behold I realized between his stints as Dynasty reject Marc Mergeron Y&R that Frank M. Benard also played a Dynasty reject character on FC in the form of Phillipe Hubert, Stravos’ treacherous son-in-law. 😂 I will say at least Sophia Stravos seems more interesting that whatever the heck JJ and Terry have going on at the moment this season, but alas she didn’t make it.

Knots Landing
Oh Greg is my 2nd favorite for sure and I completely agree with your assessment…it’s just for me I also felt the last seasons over relied and overexposed Greg wayyy too much. No fault to Devane who was always consistently good, it’s mainly because TPTB couldn’t develop anything else substantial.

Knots Landing
Possibly. Pleshette does a great job of playing the tragic nature of the character, but otherwise Richard as a character is such a weak man with an inferiority complex he comes off as always unlikeable for me, although I think JP does great with the material. As far as male characters on Knots goes Mack was always my favorite. I agree with @Chris B‘s sentiment about Annie Fairgate a couple pages back. I think the show could’ve easily brought her back, especially with a decent recast as obviously Karen Allen would be unavailable. I thought Annie was more interesting than Diana anyways lol.

Y&R: Old Articles
@YRfan23 A couple years too late but I was going back through 2004 and realized that Esther’s Las Vegas marriage and financial loss shown back in Esther/Kate Linder’s 40th anniversary tribute actually occurred in March 2004 and not under MAB as I had misremembered. From the 3/22/04 recap: Katherine goes to the athletic club and sits down at the bar. When the bartender asks her what it will be, she sighs and says that she would like a coffee. He tells her that is a good choice. As Katherine is telling the bartender that there is a man in her life that is trying to help her, a loud crash interrupts her speech. The bartender rolls his eyes and says they have a new bus person. When Katherine sees that it's Esther she comes to talk to her. Why is Esther bussing when she has all sorts of money saved? Esther tells Katherine that she met and wedded a guy who had gambled away all of her money. Katherine wants to know why she didn't come home. Esther doesn't want to get in the way of Katherine and Jill's relationship.

Bigotry on Comment Section
@Errol Yikes!! Is there any way you could limit comments on the webpage by making everyone register with an e-mail or make it exclusive that only people with a valid SON board account can comment?

Knots Landing
Richard always came off to me as such a slimy and sleazy prick in these early seasons so it always surprised me he was later actually given custody of his kids and went on the “Laura left here to die!!!” tirade in the aftermath of Laura’s death. Did a guilty conscience help him change?

Ratings from the 1990s
Oh for sure I remember it was around 99/00 when I just kind of stopped watching The Simpsons as it got dumbed down especially with the rise of South Park and Family Guy that same year or so. A few months back caught a good chunk of the 1992-95 episodes being aired on FXX I hadn’t seen in ages and found myself laughing out loud. While the show sometimes had wacky plots like Homer suing an all you can eat buffet after they ran out of food and their counter suit for him overeating lol, I forgot there was a lot of heart, charm and intelligence to the show and yet it also seemed so innocent in retrospective.

Ratings from the 1990s
Would The Simpsons count as the definitive 90’s sitcom lol? Oh I can totally see that and definitely feel bad for her. I remember seeing Richardson give a bad performance on an early SVU episode but by the time she was doing Strong Medicine and was on The West Wing she finally shook off that ranting and raving Jill Taylor persona and did well.

Meh I thought maybe this Lucy/Faith stuff could have had some type of promise yet all of comes off across like a terrible after school special from 1988 or one of those “a very special tonight” episodes form the Hogan Family. The dialogue is very strange unnatural…made worse by unnatural and stiff acting by Graz, VB, and the Lucy actress. Compounded by the fact this is another excuse for Sharon to go unhinged talking to Cameron and go after Lucy is kind of dumb. Hate to be clichè and quote that Green Day song…but wake me up when September ends if this continues…

As far as NBC interference goes well I see Willard Scott made into the 100th episode and Season 6 premiere as himself 🤣 That said now after rewatching the 6th season again in full, despite my admiration and love for Sheila Kelley on LA Law as I mentioned in the LA Law thread @DRW50 @Khan she just doesn’t work here as a recast Charley. She looks like she could fit as new character as like a step-sister or sister in law and she does decent with Wes, but it still feels way off. I forgot how much natural rawness and toughness the original actress brought to the role of Charley and Kelley unfortunately doesn’t have any of that edge here. I don’t know what happened to Jo Anderson and I do wonder if someone at NBC owned Kelley a favor given how LA Law wrote out her out. Someone mentioned earlier about Cowen & Lipman’s going of the rails in the same manner a decade later at QAF and I totally get the comparison now. Yikes!

Ratings from the 1990s
Haha well summed up! Not that I ever found Home Improvement a great show like I did with early Cosby and early Roseanne, but at least early Home Improvement was fun. The later seasons were I recall usually all about Jill being a raging psychopath with Patricia Richardson chewing the scenery while the BTS drama was more interesting than what we saw on screen…or at least that’s how I remember it LOL. But you’re right about Casey/Werner shows falling out with the passage of time. Grace Under Fire imploded infamously while it was still on the air as did Cybill. I’m not sure what happened to 3rd Rock From the Sun. I mean funny little show at the time that ran for years but never gained an audience or a cult following. I did see “That 90’s Show” has been renewed for a 3rd season, but since Seasons 1&2 took place in 1995 and 1996 it’s safe to assume there’s nothing beyond a season 5. For now I think Seinfeld, Friends, and the X-Files stood the test of time.

Ratings from the 1990s
ER was definitely a must see TV show for so many years I spent my Thursday nights watching for so long until Carter left in 2005 and then Sherry Stingfield left again not long ago. For a long running show with so many different characters and story arcs I agree it remained consistent and fairly good in quality for a good decade before eventually getting old, especially once NBC collapsed and plummeted in the late ‘00s. I don’t even recall the finale at all other than Clooney and Margulies coming back along with Carter meeting Greene’s daughter and Elizabeth Corday making a cameo appearance. But yes, ER I felt did lost in the shuffle as time when it on. Even back in the mid-00’s it flopped when The WB Network used it and a few other shows to start a daytime-lineup, and by the 2010’s was largely a memory until Hulu dug it up a few years back. Out of all the 1990’s dramas that probably withstood the test of time is probably The X-Files. Even the original Law & Order has its issues and limitations in the streaming world. Re: Home Improvement seems to be largely forgotten about too these days….I’m guessing the Tim Allen cringe factor made the show irrelevant for good.

You know I always love a good SINN reunion so I was fine with that part, although it certainly wasn’t anything like those epic Monaco reunion scenes at the church two years ago. That said, yeah the rewriting of Luna has been insane! It seems to me everything has been completely retconned. Between Luna revealing Poppy was negligent and hating her guts as opposed to being “very close” and the whole Luna/Zende twist is so absurd. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen such a hastily rewritten plot twist on a soap like this in years…and this wasn’t the type of fake-out story B&B has done in recent past either.- Young & Restless - August 2024 Episode Rankings
Overkill indeed. And unlike some of the other senior cast members like EB, MTS, PB, SW etc JT, while he has talent, doesn’t hold the gravitas to command my attention every episode and well every story Billy is in right now is unwatchable. Nobody needs to see JT Billy screaming ever again. Speaking of which, Da Stafford©️ and Giggly Heffa could be abruptly dropped tomorrow (or today lol) and nobody would blink an eye or miss her.- ALL: End of an Era: Are Daytime Soaps Washing Away?
I hope the only curtain call we see in 2025 will be on the writing careers of Josh Griffith and Thudley.- B&B: September 2024 Discussion Thread

Complete incompetence on their part. Falcon Crest’s writers saw the writing on the wall and ended the show in a tidy satisfying way. Yet Dynasty and Dallas both ended on the minuscule hope they’d get renewed…by whom lol. What a [!@#$%^&*] mess TPTB got themselves into 🤣🤣🤣- B&B: September 2024 Discussion Thread

Indeed!! It may be an unpopular opinion and I can definitely understand and respect the frustration and indifference that many of my beloved fellow SON posters have with this story but in my opinion finally for the first time in forever B&B really has given us a twisted tale worth watching…. Forget “Adam” & “Eve” Liam/Quinn captivity, forget Felony Flo, forget Thomas and the doll etc. THIS actually holds my interest As for Steffy looking weak heck she’s stronger here in a cage than last summer and this past spring when she was terrified at the mere sight of Sheila I don’t see an issue here other than Thudley’s wildly inconsistent writing for Steffy even though JMW is playing it perfectly whatever she is given.- Y&R September 2024 Discussion Thread
Indeed. Wake me up when the latest pointless quad from Hades is over with. Maybe it would’ve worked better if a crazed Chelsea made advances on Adam but he refused, yet Adam at least let Sally know, and a disgruntled but forgiving Sally at least tried to cover up for Chelsea’s sake and sanity would’ve worked better IDK. Maybe. As it stands now, Sally should set her sights on a new man, Billy needs to be reeled in by Lily on his leash, Chelsea needs to check into Fairview for an extended stay, and Adam can dive into his work but realize he has deal with a legal/business matter that involves Heather.- B&B: September 2024 Discussion Thread
Hahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was totally disgusted by the rape, but you know what something about this insane reveal works because the actress has playing Luna is playing a campy psychopath to the T without eating the show, not hamming it up, and despite being absurd it’s still reasonably plausible. We’ve been complaining about B&B but here in 2024 here we are getting classic Thudley. James E. Reilly and Hogan Scheffer would be proud of such a campy twist. @YRfan23 You know of the three different CBS affiliates I grew up with in the late 80’s, 90’s and into early ‘00 all three always the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon instead on Labor Day weekend so US Open coverage was pre-empted by lots of affiliates running the telethon. At least back then the four CBS soaps Y&R, ATWT, B&B, and GL use to least have a big cliffhanger right before Labor Day…I seriously remember once each soap ended with a car crash in like 2003 🙈- Y&R September 2024 Discussion Thread
