Reviewing the week from hell that was… Okay, I’ve been avoiding the main story of Sharon but…well I do have to give kudos to SC, Graz, and Ashby for selling such a twisted tale as actors. Because that’s the best thing working here as much as I despise the overall insane idea here of crazy Sharon killing Heather and framing Daniel for it. What’s interesting is also how here again how this Sharon story is so isolated from the rest of the show at the moment lol. The day it wasn’t on it was business as usual lol. As usual @Taoboi the highlight of the week for me was definitely Audra and Diane!! I like to think this is only a temporary setback for Audra and that here the next couple weeks she’s about to swiftly kick Kyle in the pants and send him straight back to man child status lol. Or at least be her errand boy again 😂 Diane showing off a more edgy groove should be fun but we’ll see where this goes. We were long overdue for those scenes of them together and I want more. And I love that Chance is all the case here FINALLY get proper utilization of CF’s talents. Phyllis was the lowlight of the week, too bad Sharon didn’t off her instead lol.

ALL: Short lived Headwriter stints
I’ve often read this may have been one of the worst head writing stints of any soap of all time lol. I vaguely recall SOD making reference and criticizing that Holloway told basic soap plots not seen since the early 1950’s, a huge and significant downfall from the revolutionary Labine era just a few years prior. Despite work on Peyton Place in the 60’s Holloway hadn’t written a daytime soap since The First Hundred Years and The Egg and I, which was certainly laughable by 1979 standards for sure. No wonder CBS jettisoned LOL from its traditional timeslot to a 4PM ET timeslot against Edge and disconnected from the other soaps to die a miserable death.

ALL: Black Widows/Widowers
Many, many years ago I remember someone one the old WOST website talking about how AW pretty much reused and recycled the same dialogue and details of Gil’s death for Charlie’s death leading for the poster’s mother to comment “Just another dead husband for Ada”. Yeesh. @Paul Raven I know you mentioned Lisa with Whit and Eduardo but was she still officially married to both Earl Mitchell and Michael Shea when both were murdered as well? That might push her to the top.

Y&R: October 2024 Spoilers
Despite her “body” being found I’m going assume in other words she’ll be back for November sweeps or reunite with Daniel by Christmas after reading that twice. Heather isn’t missing any toes is she @Maxim? 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe she had webbed feet? 🙈

DAYS: R.I.P. Drake Hogestyn (John Black, Days of our Lives)
Still reeling from this to be honest. I haven’t been this upset over soap death since Jeanne Cooper and Darlene Conley tbh. This is the type of passing that rattles a show to its core especially how central John & Marlena have been for the last 38 years now on and off.

Knots Landing
I like your idea of Dianne moving into the neighborhood with her family a lot. I adore Kathleen Noone but Claudia and especially Kate came off as pointless at times or unnecessary additions when compared to Anne and Paige. @Khan @Chris B I’m guessing something similar had to have happened to Strasser with Lorimar in the same way that Lesley Anne Down was treated over at Dallas i.e. promise of major character and a second season but it failed to materialize. Danny was their favorite character though…?? 🤢 Yikes. I think Behrens did fine with the creep/ick factor of the character, and Behrens himself did well as the central villain years later on Sunset Beach. Agree with these ideas! Also you have a valid point about Anne, I just recently watched her lone Season 10 appearance at Paige’s grand father’s funeral and boy was that perfect.

Knots Landing
I agree. Robin Strasser looked like a luminous diva and did a fantastic job with what she had. Problem was like you mentioned was Dianne Kirkwood was a plot device and was a very one-dimensional character. Not much to build on there. It doesn’t surprise me if Strasser was promised the Moon or something by some shady executive talking like a used car salesman and then it all fall apart. Did any of the daytime stars that came to the primetime soaps in the mid to late 80’s have any success? I’m scratching my head here. I also forgot about Marcia Cross, what a waste but then again it happened during Knots’ most lackluster season.

WTF indeed. It sucks. I already went on a long rant in the spoilers section but I really don’t want to watch any of this. I suppose I’m only interested at this point to see how this gets resolved.

Y&R: September 2024 Spoilers
My problem with this is even if it’s a massive hallucination of Sharon’s, it’s still overkill. You want to celebrate Sharon’s and Sharon Case’s 30th anniversary and unlike everyone else we get this very dark and moody anniversary special for her. We wanted a story for Sharon but nobody wanted this crap. Either way Josh Griffith can go [!@#$%^&*] himself along with our esteemed “Executive in Charge” Steve Kent. All that needed to be said. Had Amanda realized she was in fact Hilary this wouldn’t been up for conversation.

Matlock Reboot with Kathy Bates
What happened to East NY was unfortunate. A top 20 show axed because of licensing fees to Warner Bros so it was cheaper for CBS to uncancel a show because it was cheaper too. Show cancellations these days can be so frustrating because it’s no longer solely about ratings and demos but also show costs, budgets, licensing fees etc. plus the streaming aspect of it and then CBS these days have a pipeline to the point they’re already ordering new pilots and making guarantees for the 2025-26 tv season. I’m also wondering how many episodes are in this season. I’m guessing maybe 10-13? I know Kathy recently interviewed and said she may retire after this gig so I can’t see it lasting the whopping 24-25 episodes CBS was ordering for its procedurals prior to the writers strike.

Matlock Reboot with Kathy Bates
I loved East New York!!! But I think East New York was canned in favor reversing the decision to cance SWAT, while Todd actually had the same thing occur when CBS unexpectedly renewed SWAT for another season and killed Todd to make room for Matlock on the schedule. I get the Shemar love but SWAT is just not my cup of tea. But yes I definitely recommend you check it out as well, and like Soapsuds said be patient with it it’s well worth it.

Matlock Reboot with Kathy Bates
My guess it’s move to Thursdays is to pair it with Elsbeth to create a block of two similarly natured shows. Yeah the case featured felt like this show was going to be about her doing feel good civil litigation cases and what not but the ending blew that out of the water.

Matlock Reboot with Kathy Bates
I was super annoyed that CBS had cancelled So Help Me Todd and was replacing it with Matlock as Todd was like the only show outside of the soaps I even watched on the traditional broadcast networks. I gave this a shot just to see Kathy Bates, thought it was middle of the road some some very amusing moments. But then the twist ending occurred and totally unexpected. Whoa. Well done!

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Thanks @kalbir The highlight of that Dallas episode for me was Afton dumping Cliff LOL. I had to smirk a little with the rocky times ahead line with Miami Vice, Who’s The Boss, and Hunter for their initial struggles. Poor Paper Dolls I always felt that show had promise. That said…I had to laugh at Glitter bombing in the 9PM Thursday night slot against Cheers, Night Court and Simon & Simon. What a terrible recycled show, and the opening credits lasted longer than some of the actual scenes 🤣 @Paul Raven @Khan

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Article on ratings for that week in September 1984, Cosby ended up being #1: ABC won the prime time ratings for the second... Sept. 25, 1984 NEW YORK -- ABC won the prime time ratings for the second consecutive week last week, as the three networks continued to roll out their new offerings for the 1984-85 TV season. The A.C. Nielsen prime time ratings for the week ending Sept. 23 gave ABC a 15.3 rating and a 27 percent share of the audience, NBC a 14.8 rating with a 26 share and CBS a 14.2 rating with a 25 share. The premiere of the critically acclaimed new situation comedy on NBC 'The Bill Cosby Show' was the No. 1 show of the week, and several other new programs bumped the season's premiere of some of last year's favorites, at least temporarily, off the Top 10 list. ABC's new show 'Glitter,' which ranked 12th when it premiered the previous week, came in a poor 30th last week, and the network's 'Hawaiian Heat,' which was 7th when it premiered was 14th. NBC's new 'Punky Brewster,' 38th when it premiered against the runover NFL football game and '60 Minutes' on CBS, slipped to 48th last week. Other new programs that got off to less than hot starts were CBS's 'Cover-up' (33rd), NBC's 'Partners in Crime' (36th), ABC's 'Who's the Boss' (39th), ABC's 'Finders of Lost Loves' (40th), NBC's 'Hot Pursuit' (50th) and ABC's 'People Do the Craziest Things' (55th). The new CBS sitcom 'E-R,' starring Elliot Gould plunged from first place the previous week to 51st last week when it was competing with the season's premiere of NBC's hottest show 'The A-Team.' The Emmy awards program placed 13th. In the evening news category, 'CBS Evening News with Dan Rather' was No. 1 for the 126th consecutive week with a 10.8 rating and a 23 share. ABC's 'World News Tonight' had a 9.9 rating with a 22 share and 'NBC Nightly News' had an 8.2 rating with an 18 share. Top 10 prime time shows for the week ending Sept. 23, according to the A.C. Nielsen Co., were: 1. The Bill Cosby Show (NBC) 2. 60 Minutes (CBS) 3. Highway to Heaven (NBC) 4. Hunter (NBC) 5. The A-Team (NBC) 6. NBC Sunday Night Movie (The Enforcer) 7. ABC Sunday Night Movie (Paper Dolls) 8. AfterMASH (CBS) 9. Three's Company (ABC) 10. The soaps and other dramas didn’t return to air until the following week along with MSW’s premiere: NEW YORK -- CBS won the prime time ratings for the first week of the 1984-85 TV season last week and NBC, long the No. 3 network, came in second, well ahead of ABC. The A.C. Nielsen prime time ratings for the week ending Sept. 30 gave CBS a 17.5 rating and a 29 percent share of the audience, NBC a 16.1 rating with a 27 share and ABC a 14.5 rating with a 24 share. The CBS win was accomplished chiefly by the strong performance of returning series, with the premieres of 'Dallas' and 'Falcon Crest' at the top of the heap and '60 Minutes' placing sixth. Only one new CBS series 'Murder She Wrote' made the list of the top 10 programs. NBC's critically acclaimed new situation comedy 'The Bill Cosby Show,' which was the No. 1 show when it premiered the previous week, placed a strong third last week and knocked the premiere of CBS's popular 'Magnum, P.I.' out of its usual place among the 10 most popular programs. With the strong 'Cosby' lead-in, the season's premiere of NBC's 'Family Ties' also managed to push the premiere of CBS's 'Simon and Simon' off the most popular list. ABC had only one program on the top 10 list, 'Dynasty,' which placed fourth. Although the networks began showing sneak-preview, pilot specials of the new season's shows as early as three weeks ago, last week was the official start of the new season. CBS marked the occasion with a miniseries 'Mistral's Daughter,' but the three-part film failed to grab the audience size network's usually hope for with such a production. Part I of 'Mistral' placed 18th, the viewing audience being split by 'Monday Night Football' on ABC and the NBC movie 'Secrets of a Married Man,' while Part 2 placed 12th, getting zapped by NBC's 'The A-Team.' Part 3 was 25th. New shows that failed to place among the top 40 list -- a sign of rocky times ahead -- included NBC's 'Miami Vice,' 'Partners in Crime,' 'Hunter' and 'Hot Pursuit'; ABC's 'Paper Dolls,' 'Jessie,' 'Glitter,' 'Call to Glory,' 'Who's the Boss, 'Hawaiian Heat' and 'People Do the Craziest Things,' and CBS's 'E-R.' In the evening news category, 'CBS Evening News with Dan Rather' was No. 1 with an 11.7 rating and a 24 share. ABC's 'World News Tonight' had a 10.5 rating with a 21 share and 'NBC Nightly News' had an 8.7 rating with an 18 share. Top 10 prime time shows for the week ending Sept. 30, according to the A.C. Nielsen Co., were: 1. Dallas (CBS) 2. Falcon Crest (CBS) 3. The Bill cosby Show (NBC) 4. Dynasty (ABC) 5. The A-Team (NBC) 6. 60 Minutes (CBS) 7. Cheers (NBC) 8. Family Ties(NBC) 9-10 tie. Murder She Wrote (CBS) 9-10 tie. Knight Rider (NBC)

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Does TVOne also air A Different World? I haven’t seen that show in several years and don’t know if it’s even streaming or not. Yeah although I enjoyed the show in its earlier seasons I never cared for the opening as well. The dancing always came off as awkward to me and unlike other 80’s openings none of them were too memorable except for that strange and unusual 88-89 one I shared. As @kalbir pointed out the show definitely had a creative decline as it hit the 90’s at which point I myself was watching The Simpsons instead and just causally moved on. The Season 8 opening definitely feels like it was trying to be a tv show on Fox instead:

Le Sigh. We’ve already been down this road before with Felicia, Katie, and Eric and someone else I’m forgetting too. We also are forgetting that this is Thudley’s B&B so there is a possibility that Taylor is lying a la Stephanie, Sally etc. Or Taylor learning she is actually improving but lies to make it sound she’s getting worse. Ya I can see them killing off Luna to give Taylor a heart a la Storm. Will Thudley ever think of something original for once?
