Just to add, until the late 90's a song needed a physical release to be charted on the Hot 100. As a result you had many huge radio hits that never could chart on the Hot 100. But I agree with your assessment. Comparing eras is kind of futile. I will say, E.T. is probably Katy's deepest single to date.... well deep for her I guess. I kind of like it.

This country version is surprisingly good. I can't believe she made it work. #1 for a 6th straight week on Billboard, #1 on Billboard airplay, will top Billboard Mainstream Top 40 next week becoming her 7th.

Rihanna has really crafted herself a nice, cozy corner in in the pop music market. She virtually has no competition right now in that edgier, dance, pop music right now.... I love alot of Rihanna songs. Like I mean in general she is obviously competing with Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kesha.... but she does have her own unique sound that sets her apart from all those others. Probably why whenever she does release a single, its a global hit. She has an amazing production team.

She's definitely taken his spot in that domain, among the living anyway. I don't mind the video. Its as outlandish as all her videos have been, but seems to take it to the next level... which is what each of her videos seem to do.... When you hear the song you definitely picture a much more low-key, happy, celebration, Madonna-esqe video.... but this is Gaga... what you picture in your head is certainly not what you are going to get. I find the monologue so cheesy, and honestly burst out laughing when I heard her say "This is the Manifesto of Mother Monster"... I wouldn't call it the best video ever made, but she at least is still trying to keep the format going by making epic videos... whether you like the "epic" videos or see them as just displays of egocentricity... they are fun to watch. I wonder how much this cost.... But, yes... Bad Romance is the best video (and song to date) she has ever done... I'll be very interested to see if ANY song on Born This Way can top it...

"The Manifesto of Mother Monster".... did she actually say that? Oh man...

My point was those show's never seemed to discover "talent" like they do today.

Remember the days where there were no singing shows? The industry was so empty and full of non-talent studio creations and.... wait a minute...

That's right, he had stuff on youtube before Usher "discovered" him.... ugh.

Oh did she? Oh well that's good then... but yeah... youtube is awesome for alot of things, but the way it brings these nobodies out of the woodwork is kind of annoying.... has anyone discovered on youtube actually amounted to anything? Good for her though and good for GaGa inviting her to sing at her Toronto show.... its just all so shallow and frankly, boring. At least I know I'll have company in that special ring of hell reserved for grumpy, cantankerous souls like us

I guess I am the only one who can't really see the hype behind this girl. I guess because she is only 10? I find the whole thing rather uninspired. Also, she left out the most "important" part of the song. From what I understand she is from an extremely religious and conservative family... I guess that's not her fault, but still, it falls extremely flat for me. I know, I'll rot for harping on a poor 10 year old child...

Judas is produced by RedOne so I am hoping it will be better than Born This Way. Her "best" songs (Poker Face, Bad Romance, Just Dance etc) all done by RedOne. Should be interesting. I am predicting the release of Judas will be pushed up because I kind of sense while Born This Way is going to break records with its debut, I don't see it breaking any records with its longevity.

On Jay Leno she referred to the egg as a "vessel".... bull [!@#$%^&*] she spent 3 days in it....

That was pretty damn good. I kept hearing people say they also found the song similar to Waterfalls and I was having the damnedest time trying to hear that... while I think its still a bit of a stretch, this guy highlighted it pretty good. Its clear Express Yourself is the clear inspiration, beyond that it gets to be a little much. Oh well, its still fun to watch.

Capital Y-E-S! LOL I was having this exact conversation with a good friend of mine yesterday regarding Madonna at her height never claimed to be better than anyone else when she probably could easily have. One of the many reasons Madonna is an icon and one of the many reasons Gaga doesn't even come close to her status at this point, and she most likely never will. If Gaga is to be an icon, she will be an icon because she brings something different to the table. She has yet to do that, and probably never will. Like I said, she doesn't have to be an icon for me to enjoy her music. I wish she'd realize that.... Toups and AMS, I agree with you to a point... like I have established, I am a Gaga fan so I guess I can enjoy her too with all the added hysterics she has about her, it still does get to me though. Just like anyone I come across in my life that is egotistical, it rubs me the wrong way. I am by my nature a very modest person, so that's probably why. Bragging and egotistical musings turn me off big time.

Yeah, true. Never thought about that. We Belong Together was probably the biggest hit across the board we've seen in the last 15 years... probably the one before that being that song she did with Boys II Men. And yes, Sylph Mariah has fell back to the mediocre status she was in from 2001-2005... I don't know if she has two "comebacks" in her.

You interpretation of her is really hitting the nail on the head. Her actions kind of contradict her message of "Be Yourself, because you were born this way".... she seems to be trying to hard to perpetuate that she's being herself that it comes off as rather artificial and hollow. She just needs to embrace who she is, a pop star who knows how to put out a catchy beat and has a great group of handlers. I mean, she doesn't have to be an icon or a visionary to make decent pop music, not in my mind anyway. I think if you had been living under a rock these last 2.5 years and when you came from under that rock and just listened to her music without any preconceived notions, you'd enjoy it if you were a pop music fan. Her beats are infectious, but its her projected image that seems to cloud that for many people and they can't be blamed for feeling that way. I really hope she dials it back a notch, because she won't be relevant within 5-10 years, let alone be this "icon" she already claims to be. Its sad to me, because I really do like her and her message at its roots and really do think if she was banking on her talent alone she could be here to stay for many years, I just can't stand the hype and hysteria she seems to propagate for herself. Wow, that's insanity. Does We Belong Together by Mariah Carey still hold the record for most radio impressions in one week? I think that record is on its way to being broken then.

Yes! I loved Just Dance and Poker Face so I went and bought the album, and for the first few weeks those songs you list were at the top in my ipod play list. Boys Boys Boys is such a fun, shallow song.

Critically, I think you are right... but judging on the initial numbers she is probably poised to have her best selling single worldwide to date. The fact that she is dropping this 3 months prior to the album is probably a smart move commercially because people will be clamouring to hear anything that is Gaga... and this will be the only thing available probably until a week or two before the record drops which is when the 2nd single will probably be released. Not that that trumps the critical reception in anyway, its just kind of a sad commentary on the state of music today I guess....

I am very confused as to why she chose to use that word. Like, what the hell was she thinking?

The Lady Gaga Thread
Yep! I love her for who she is and what she represents for many people, predominantly the gay community, but the last thing I love her for is her originality or her ego... she needs to stop trying so damn hard, and just embrace that she is a pop musician that makes decent pop music that plays well to the masses and does well in the clubs. She needs to stop claiming to be "the best of the decade" and all this B.S... the simple fact is she cannot even begin to touch Madonna in terms of icon status or talent. The claim she is somehow an icon is quite hallow (and even hollower when it comes from her or her people). She is a very insecure person. On the song "Born This Way".... if it had been released like any other pop song without such fanfare and hype, it is a decent song. Its catchy, and will be great on a dance floor. The hype though was bound to make it seem underwhelming, which it totally did. I heard it this morning and seriously was like wtf?. I think its a good message she is trying to send, but I feel it could have been communicated better. She claims she wrote it in 10 minutes, if that is the case.... she should have spent at least 20 lol. Oh well, I'll await the album.... with reservation. I try to ignore all that ego b.s and just enjoy it for the poppy music it is, but it gets rather tiring. As far as pop music goes though, its a step down from the production on The Fame Monster. HUGE step down.

She might have kind of a "Pink" look but their musical styles are in no way comparable in my view.

I've rediscovered Robyn recently. I loved her in the mid 90's, but I am absolutely loving this 3 part BodyTalk album she released last year! <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CcNo07Xp8aQ" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>
