B&B: Old/Classic Discussion & Articles
I was waiting for you to come online to see your reaction. It's amazing, isn't it? It's a different person who uploaded the German episodes, but of course, I agree rsclassicfan is wonderful too. There was a list somewhere on the vault with missing episodes... maybe someone can update that after this weekend? I wish. Getting Y&R is my #1 goal and I'm constantly trying to find new episodes. It does not seem to be as well archived as B&B, perhaps because B&B is more international. I get frustrated when I see that people upload entire years of GL or B&B at a time from one channel and for Y&R it's like one episode here and there.

This is what was happening on Y&R. It doesn't really sound that hot to me. THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS: Week of January 15 - January 19, 1979 Stu told his daughters he’ll marry Jill, who learned Kay agreed to divorce Derek. Lance tried to get closer to Lucas, while Vanessa tempted Lucas to take over the company from his brother. Suzanne realized she’ll lose her meal ticket if Kay divorces Derek. Peggy railed against Stu’s decision. THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS: Week of January 22 - January 26, 1979 Liz was devastated and thew Jill out after learning of Jill’s marriage plans with Stu. Lucas and Leslie couldn’t return to Switzerland when she had premature labor pains. Kay and Suzanne joined forces to intercept Derek from meeting Jill before Jill left to wed Stu. Lorie was nervous when Lance rushed to check on Leslie’s condition.

Y&R: Old Articles
I can see how they got into the situation. You have the actor on recurring, you work him when there is a good crime story, then you work him less, but you don't want to completely write him off and make him leave town, just in case you need him, so it's just kind of assumed he's around until it just becomes comical... it's ironically the same thing that happened to Doug Davidson. They could have just said he died offscreen like Stuart Brooks or Mary Williams and let it be, but at least they tried to resolve it with a little retcon, and it was nice to have Mary in a big storyline. Back in those days, once in a while Gina, Mary, Miguel, Carol, or Esther would get their moment in the sun. Nowadays even the once great characters like Lauren and Michael you can rest assured will never be featured in a storyline of their own ever again.

Nice investigative reporting @Errol!

Y&R: Old Articles
I agree. The 1998 storyline was my first time seeing him and he was great. When someone posted those big clip compilations of 1982-1988, there was a lot of material with the Williams family that was wonderful to see. Carl's rivalry with Terry Lester's Jack is so underrated. They played off each other so well. There is a little bit about Brett Hadley's life in retirement in this article from 2020: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2020-04-10/motion-picture-television-fund-residents-coronavirus

Thanks, had not seen the clip of Bocelli. That sure looks like a set, not remote. I wonder if they filmed it in LA.

To think it ended up that simple after all the speculation about breakouts and repeats, haha. So good to finally know!

Looking through the ratings reports from @Errol "breakout" typically means it was a repeat or the majority of the episode was interrupted by news, therefore it's a special that doesn't count in the ratings. It would be interesting to know if there's some kind of criteria the network needs to meet, or else they could just call their lower rated episodes "breakouts."

Glad you got them! Do they have commercials? That may help. The German episodes dates I think are estimated, because we don't know all the preemptions for 1987, so I'm not surprised they're not synced up. I have 6/24 as the day that Jill (Brenda) is wearing a white suit and veil and they go to court to finalize Phillip's name change.

There is an excellent guide made by a French site that I am pretty sure used that guide to match up the dates with episode #s. It has 9/4/78 as a preemption. Mostly, the preemptions can be intuited if there's a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas or an obvious one like a presidential inauguration. So Labor Day was a good guess but was never sure (since Y&R US Open preemptions don't start til the mid/late 80s). I was pretty sure it was 9/4/78 until @will81 did some research and discovered that the US Open coverage started late which you confirmed. We will know better once you post the rest of the year. Unless Y&R happened to be preempted on one of those lost weeks, which is extremely unlikely, by process of elimination we will probably see that there wasn't a new episode on 9/4/78. But that opens the question of what the heck did they air, and why did Search For Tomorrow have a new episode then! Especially since SFT aired after Y&R so it's not like some affiliates wanted to do a half hour of pre-US Open coverage or something like that.

Thanks so much for the detailed info! Wow. So the mystery continues. 😅 I am wondering if they repeated an episode like Chris & Snapper's wedding. I know in some correspondence, Bell was trying to use a lot of clips of the wedding in episodes and highlight that to advertisers to try to get a new ratings high (I presume because it was cleared in more affiliates than it had been when it originally aired in January 1974). @will81 @yrfan1983 and @YRfan23 will be interested in this info!

Y&R on September 4 Would have been a possible US Open date, but the coverage seems to have started after Y&R would have aired, so it's quite the mystery.

Thanks! A bit of a bummer as Labor Day is one of the preemptions I was looking to confirm. 😆

So if I'm clear, for 1978 we've already missed the weeks of March 20, April 10, April 17, April 24 and there will be 3 more missing?

Wikipedia does not give dates, but it has the titles for the episodes, so you may be able to search them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicorn_Tales Thanks @JAS0N47for all these treasures!

Looking through their post history, some of their links to their folders still work, but for 2000 they only had July - December. They are Australian episodes and they wanred that they might edit curses and fights. Even DVD sites I know of don't seem to have early 2000 B&B. Not sure why it's so difficult to find.
