ARTICLE: ‘Soaps’ Documentary Film In The Works At Amplify Pictures Exploring the Family Dynasty Behind ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’
While soaps are inarguably dismissed, I wish that someone would discuss this idea within the context of the audience. Much like disco was derided during its time as a musical genre. Meanwhile, post-modern media critics discussed the ethnocentrism that favored classic rock geared toward white men and downplayed the artistic merits of music loved by gay and black audiences. Soaps have often been dismissed because they have been written for women, or people who are outside the daily workforce. Soap enthusiasts typically note its role as a “learning ground” for many successful actors. But, they rarely take umbrage with the idea that there is value to be found in an entertainment format specifically designed to entice women and their fantasies. And the misogyny in placing less value on a genre that utilizes melodrama because of its appeal to women (and, of course, gay men), rather than “gritty” violent fantasies meant to appeal to men.

It is odd to think that Rachel and Sophia, who were central to today's episode, will both be replaced very soon. It seems jarring mid-story, but hope springs eternal. Also, so soapy that nobody seems to text or use their IPhone, like when Sophia's mother confronted her at work, rather than just leaving an all-caps text, like a normal person. I can't help but be distracted by Marlena's windows. I thought it was a penthouse, but they are so close to that other building? Every scene, I kept looking at the window and wondering why Doc has such a crummy view. I mean, Brady can walk from the Dimera mansion to Marlena's condo, so why doesn't she look onto the square or someplace pretty? I appreciate that they dress Tate, Holly, and Sophia like high schoolers,it sort of reinforces Amy's point that they seem too young to make their own choices. But that bow on top of Rachel's head, and her dialogue, betray her age.

Matt Wolf is a very interesting filmmaker, I would encourage anyone to seek out his other work https://mattwolf.info/ His prior docs have focused on the LA Punk scene in the 90s, teenage propaganda, and Pee Wee Herman. So, it promises to be unique.

B&B: "Soaps" Documentary Featuring The Bold & The Beautiful
The filmmaker is very good. He did this excellent doc about Pee Wee Herman (no joke). And he's very avant-garde. So, I look forward to his perspective on the genre, as it promises to be artistic and not just rudimentary information.

OK, I'm not even going to cover Bonnie's injuries after the fall because I not only don't expect realism, I know that they don't have access to Google in the writer's room. I know this because Xander & Philip don't seem to know what a corporate takeover entails. However, the fact that the serial stalker doesn't even have a lair, and is stuck crossing out 8x10 photos in the park is laughable! Isn't a bathroom, a hallway, or somewhere beyond a public park for this stalker to conspire? Also, when Bonnie fell (two floors?), did they just pick her up and drag her over to the ER because she was already on site? And regardless of who sent the text, why would someone enter an elevator without looking?

I think you've been watching too many soaps, and getting conspiratorial. 😉 Because it is equally likely that a writer with his experience was paid more when he was on a network-based salary than for a streaming service. And a new producer wanted to cut costs and go with a writing team that fit her vision. And his contract was up, so it was the right time to move on. I believe we're all influenced by the statement that said he was leaving immediately. But, that was not necessarily as much of a diss, as it was a WGA mandated way of writing about contracts. Because, a production cannot hire new writers while they are in good faith negotiating a contract with a WGA member.

1/3 of the B&S cast is out of commission between Chanel, Hattie, and Bonnie. Can you imagine if Y&R lost Nikki, Phyllis, and Sharon, all in the same month? Speaking of which, why is The Spectator running a gossip column based only on a streaming soap opera? Jack really needs to take back control and focus the paper on more pressing concerns.

DAYS: RIP Francisco San Martin (ex-Dario)
@Bright EyesThe government collects epidemiological data to determine the health needs of the citizens. The ethical issue is whether the press should publish the data, even when they have access. On the other hand, the leading cause of death for men under 40 are car accidents (40%), followed by suicide (11%). So, it would be easy to guess the cause based on the probability and the place of death. It is my belief that we should talk openly about suicide in order to help those in need. Keeping secrets is never healthy.

Let me start with the positive, this is the best facework on Daytime TV. If they bruise that face with this elevator stunt, she should sue. For an actress who has been on TV for 40 years, she looks remarkable. Hair, makeup, not too much filler, just really good. Now for the other stuff. Am I the only one who thinks Alex looks old for Joy? He's a handsome guy, but she looks very youthful when standing next to him. RonC rarely hits the mark when it comes to the dénouement of a story. The start of the Lady Whistleblower story was fine, the reveal was slightly surprising, and then the confrontation was awful. Kerry confessed to everything, but there are zero consequences. His admission took very little effort. And the breakup with Javi felt inevitable, but unmotivated. I still don't get why Javi would care that Kerry was a gossip columnist, considering that they really seemed to like each other, and he's only known Leo for a short time. I mean, Leo fenced Alice Horton's necklace, isn't that worse than publishing your opinions about a soap opera? If not, all of us on this forum need to re-assess what our loved ones would think if they read our postings. 🫣

GH: Classic Thread
I enjoy the reference to Lila sending flowers, because she obviously didn't live there yet. I wonder if the scene exists where Lila and Edward decide to move to Port Charles permanently? Furthermore, I agree with Monica, how did Rick get their phone number when they just bought the house? It also made me remember Monica's iconic bun. I appreciate the coding that Monica wore her hair up while on duty, and she unpinned her hair for in flangrante delicto with Rick. Finally, it is so soapy that Monica doesn't even notice Alan's flaring nostrils when she mentions Rick. She's a smart cookie, I would think she could read the rather obvious non-verbal cues. I recall the first refresh under Joe Hardy, the staircase was redesigned. It got pushed back, more in line with the front door, to expand the foyer. The stairs were also angled differently, (easier to push someone down), and the colors in the drawing room were richer. The current version gets me totally befuddled because I no longer understand the blueprint. Also, it is always TV magic that the actual set of Lesley's house was probably more square footage (because it had a kitchen), but the Q estate always seemed bigger.

If I were Sami, I would be beyond annoyed at Marlena for going to lunch with Leo. It is one thing for them to have a professional relationship, because she appears to be almost the only therapist in town (with the notable exception being the one that Rachel will see). However, given Leo's multiple crimes against Will, Sami has every reason to hate the dude, and want her mother to go to lunch with almost anyone else. Also, a sweatshirt from Rochester is the dumbest form of proof. Say what you will about RonC, but he usually tries to be a bit more clever with his clues. Why not just have Kerry arrive home to a neon sign that says, “I'm Lady Whistleblower”?

Illustrated Soap Ads - the good, the bad, and the oddities
Sandy Dvore will always be the Gold Standard for Illustrations. His work was so minimal, and yet captures the entire essence of the subject. Here from his Instagram is his original sketch of Eric Braden. According to the caption, he did all the original sketches in the 1970s, and then redrew them in the 1980s My father used to buy his suits at Sy Devore, an old Hollywood men's store. And as I kid, I thought they were the same person, because the store was filled with sketches of men's Hollywood costumes from the golden age.

Given that EJ is single, I wonder if they'd be a good match? I think they are trying to keep Cat as a "good girl", but there are references to a dark past of drug use and fraud, so maybe she could gravitate toward EJ. In terms of today's episode, Fake Rafe is making Jada look dumb. Except for her fantastic hair, her denial of the facts is beyond belief. For me, what's missing in the Lady Whistleblower stuff is some viable exposition. Did Kerry plan it from the first time he met Leo? How did he connect with Chad? Is his motive B&S based, or due to Leo's rejection?

But, that's why it stuck out today. Marlena ran into Steve and Kayla, but rather than comparing stories about Cat. She only asked about John and talked about how she hates cooking for one. Which is weird because (1) she doesn't have a kitchen, and (2) I thought she existed on exclusively on strawberries and cream. 😉🍓

ALL: Couple vs SUPER Couple?
I feel like difference relies upon whether you are rooting for the couple, or the individual to find love. Erica Kane was never in a supercouple, because we wanted her to find love and feel fulfilled. Whereas, Bo & Hope went through many obstacles as partners. The end goal was always for them to find a way back to being together.

Your daily (or nightly) thought
Living here forever, the thing that annoys me about the term “SoCAL Strong”, or any of its predecessors like “Vegas Strong”, or “Philly Strong” is that it tries to be location specific. However, the truth is that most people want to help each other regardless of where they live. It has nothing to do with urban pride. We are just conditioned to think that those around us are dangerous or judgmental by what we see on TV. But, when put to the test, most humans band together for a common cause. Apathy is learned, empathy is natural.

Given the timing, and the number of rewrites, I am wondering how Cat's tale about John saving her mother jibes with Steve's memory of the event? We know Steve was there. We also know that John doesn't recall the specifics because he was being mind controlled by the deck of cards. But, wouldn't Steve have known Victor's plan to save Katherina? Also, while I like that Stephanie told Sarah about the fake letter. Once again, the timing is too rushed. It feels like Stephanie and Philip went on one date and then broke up, and Stephanie and Sarah have been close friends for around two seconds (I know they all have more history, but I am commenting within the context of this story). I hate Sarah keeping the truth from Xander. I wish that Philip had more leverage. For example, if Kate threatened to out Kayla for giving Sarah the serum, then everyone would have a valid excuse to keep quiet. Stephanie would want to save her mother, Sarah and Xander would want to protect Kayla. It would all make sense.
