As far as I know, all breakout means is the network tells Nielsen it does not want that episode counted as part of the weekly/yearly averages, since those breakout episodes (airing on much smaller amount of affiliates) would bring down the overall weekly/yearly averages.  It does not mean it is a repeat. What I had said earlier about the YR 9/4/78 is that I could not confirm whether it was a new episode or a repeat just on the basis of it being a breakout.

Thanks, it’s too bad they are vague with that but I’m excited to see the other weeks leading towards the end of the year, that will help too. :)

So this is weird…I just got the ‘87 episodes and for 6/19, it’s a completely different episode than the one that’s in German in the vault. Jess Walton isn’t in it at all. It’s an episode where BD is in the role and she’s in a red dress talking to David Kimble in her office about getting Phillip III out of Kay’s clutches. And the sources that say Jess debuted on 6/22 are also wrong because in 6/22, BD is also in that episode talking to Kay and Phillip III at the mausoleum. And 6/24 isn’t BD’s last appearance because she isn’t in even in the episode at all. Does anyone have any info on Jess Walton’s actual debut date as Jill in the temporary role and then her next appearance when she officially takes over as Jill when she’s in the white suit talking to David Kimble in Jill’s office at Jabot?

Wait are these the same episodes that we are suppose to see on archive?

Pannoni doesn’t always have the correct dates himself so that will play a factor sometimes.

Jess debuted as a temp on 6/19/87 and Brenda was back on 6/22 and officially departed 6/24 with Jess officially taking over on 6/25.

Thank you so much for these continuing posts! :D

@Broderick@vetsoapfan is it confirmed that the term “breakout” refers to an episode that is repeated? I’m referring to Y&R and OLTL that don’t have Monday 9/4/78 as “preempted” but basically said that episode didn’t reflect the ratings, unless some affiliates got an episode that day and some didn’t?

Pannoni just put up the following Y&R episodes on his trading site that he’s received:

    -3/30/87

    -6/19/87

    -6/22/87

    -6/24/87

As we know, Jess Walton’s temp debut was 6/19 and official debut was 6/24 (right? LOL), so I’m gonna try to get a trade going to get my hands on them so I can upload them to the vault :). His trade status is closed right now, so as soon as he’s up for trading I’m gonna go for it! :D

I hope he adds the episodes soon! :D

Thanks so much for the detailed info!

Wow. So the mystery continues. 😅 I am wondering if they repeated an episode like Chris & Snapper's wedding. I know in some correspondence, Bell was trying to use a lot of clips of the wedding in episodes and highlight that to advertisers to try to get a new ratings high (I presume because it was cleared in more affiliates than it had been when it originally aired in January 1974). @will81 @yrfan1983 and @YRfan23 will be interested in this info!

Thanks!! :D that is interesting yet a bit frustrating that they don’t actually just mentioned what might have been shown of Y&R 9/4/78. I guess a repeat is possible. “Breakout is such an odd wording to use” haha

In one of Bill Bell's script logs, it lists YR airing #1380-1429 between 8/28/78-11/6/78. So, based on that time frame, which covers 51 dates, there were 50 episodes aired. So one preemption between 8/28-11/6. Do you know of any other preemptions during that time frame?

Hopefully that info might solve the mystery?? Once I look through the Nielsen data, that will confirm any preemptions for all but the week of 8/28-9/1.

I wonder if something was corrected within those days, or Bill Bell thought a show would get preempted but didn’t. Perhaps 9/4/78 is listed in the scripts but maybe ended up airing the next day which would explain, There being 50 days between that time span.  It will be interesting to see what the other ratings reveal hopefully.

Watching the Dec ’90 Danny and Cricket clips… I’ll always wonder what happened to Chase as played by Stephen Gregory…?

During this timeframe, he is fully involved in the David Kimball plot… realizing that the woman he had dated, Cathy, was actually named Vivian… and had died in a freak accident. He also was being targeted for information by Diane.

By early Feb ’91, he disappears (assumedly without a farewell scene) just as the David plot approaches the climax with Nina shooting him.

Did something happen behind-the-scenes to hasten Chase’s exit? It would have made much more sense and heightened the dramatic tension even more, if David somehow murdered Chase just as Chase had discovered evidence to nail David.

Also - it’s sad and ironic when Cricket fills in Danny about Scott and Lauren breaking up over “another woman”… and Danny vowing the same thing will never happen to them… and LITERALLY the same thing happens, as both Sheila and Phyllis drugged and raped their respective targets Scott and Danny.

Someone on Usenet actually mentioned something similar along the lines of how Chase should have ended up murdered by David or possibly accidentally by Nina (which would have been very dark). His absence from the rest of the story is so glaring and it still bugs me that I do think he was suppose to be Nina’s “end game” with all of this

    Crazy, how time flies!

i guess in light of those AWFUL first storylines I was not the only one NEVER picturing JMW to stay around at B&B and turn into the next generation number one diva!????

I was also geniunely surprised when she came back in 2013 after her exit. Somehow this soap job really works for Jackie and while she is no Meryl Streep she is having major screen presence and that is something. Kudos to her for that 15 year anniversary!

Im happy she’s held this job steady all these years but looking back at some of the earlier Steffy scenes, I feel like she was suppose to be  and still works better as more of a modern day Lorie Brooks, then what she became a couple years later, basically becoming Stephanie Jr….I would have never killed off Phoebe and would have had Steffy feud with her sister, in the same manor of Lorie and Leslie and Even Carrie and Sami on Days.

Seems like a Spny problem, are they this strict with Days?

They seem to be, although I feel like There's probably more of a chance for Days to eventually get to release classic episodes online, especially with them already a streaming platform.

I can’t believe they shut you down. These are episodes from 30+ years ago. Who cares! Plus in German.  it’s taking awhile to upload. These are big files.  Still looking for 2-26-1992 and a few others from 1992.

I'll never understand the problem and why it never seems to be an issue for other soaps... At least B&B has broken away from that curse and you can now watch several full years of classic episodes...hopefully the same can be said for Y&R some day.

I have all of February 1992 except 2/11/92, 2/24/92, and 2/26/92. I hope those episodes and others I'm missing surface at some point.

Related to the Kay/Katherine discussion, sometime in the mid-2000s the show stopped having characters call her Vicki and exclusively had everyone call her Victoria. The same with Nick versus Nicholas, though I think he's still called Nick sometimes.

If I recall, it was Ryan who started calling her “Vicky” right when they met in 1991. I think upon SORASing Nick either Called her Vicky or “Vic”. Neil called her Vicky or Vic occasionally as well. I think only her parents and female rivals referred to her as Victoria.

    Wasn't scripted.

I'm sure  I can say this -- nobody told Bill what he could or couldnt do.

I figured as much! :D Although Kay said not too long ago on a podcast that Braeden rarely allows Victor to  cave to anyone, which is of course true.

Reckon the concept of the Brad Carlton character had even been conceived in 1983, or did they intend to put someone else entirely into the cage?

Maybe Bill Bell had in mind originally for Eve to imprison Victor in a cage this time? :D It would have been kind of poetic justice for the Michael Scott stuff two years earlier. I could see that being the original idea before Bill Bell decided to have Eve try to poison Victor.

Hello. I’m new to this group. Just wanted to say hi. I’ve watched YR since 1981 (in summers) til the family got a vcr in 1988. Then I dubbed only Danny and Cricket scenes. I’very been uploading what I have to the vault. Looking for beginning of 1992 to around august as my vcr tape of that time  got ate. I know they aren’t everyone’s fave but I like their chemistry. Just wanted to say hi!

Welcome and thanks for all you have uploaded so far! :D  Fun to see those rare scenes.

Sadly with my channel being terminated I can't share any January-August 92 Episodes I have directly on here, but they are all saved on the vault thankfully! :D

I don't understand why people say 1994 to 96 weak years

I loved the Matt Clark storyline, Nathan and keisha story....hell even the who shot victor story

I admit 1998 to 05 to be an underrated era

I can’t speak for everyone but I think it’s because a lot of people didn’t like seeing Nick and Sharon dominate the show from Summer/fall 1994-1996? I guess also because 96-97 in particular seemed to have a lot of laziness in some of the plotting which seemed to be because of Bill Bells increasing sickness. Still anything in those days is still miles ahead of the writing we started to get when LML etc…took over that’s still being plagued on the show today.

Same thing happened that led to Victor's heart attack with Jack in the office. When Bill was informed of the...incident...between the two actors, which he was informed in the middle of a story meeting, he said "Victor has a heart attack and Jack gives him mouth-to-mouth" (which didn't happen, of course).

Haha, If that was still scripted, when those scenes were about to be filmed,  I can see both actors immediately throwing a tantrum to have that changed immediately! :D I bet there's so much dish that can be shared about Jack and Victor scenes from Kay when she and Bill were plotting them. I'd like to know first hand (unless she's never allow to reveal this) If EB usually followed through with all Bill Bell's story ideas for him or if stuff had to be changed, because of...well you know how he can be..LOL

can't speak for everyone of course, but I was a big fan of Jeanne Cooper, and I enjoyed the Kay/Marge storyline because it gave Miss Cooper something to play.  (For several years prior, she'd been merely a mother figure to Nikki, a sparring partner for Jill, and the "protector" of Phillip III.)  It was a fairly stupid storyline, but it showcased Jeanne Cooper's versatility in a new way -- she got to portray Kay Chancellor as a captive, Marge as a waitress, Marge masquerading as Kay Chancellor, and even Kay Chancellor masquerading as Marge masquerading as Kay.  Most of Miss Cooper's work during the storyline, in my opinion, was spot-on.

I definitely enjoyed the Marge/Kay story! :D like @kalbir mentioned it was definitely some of Jeanne's best work, and I think one of her favorite stories/characters If I recall. There were definitely lots of comedic moments in the story which I enjoyed too.

  18. 49 minutes ago, Broderick said:

The "whiteface" storyline didn't seem so offensive (or absurd) at the time, because soaps were telling such weird "sci-fi" type storylines.  Between 1980 and 1985, we'd seen shows telling stories about controlling the world's weather, searching for Aztec treasure, sending subliminal messages through video discos, and all types of nonsense.  That's about the time Dynasty even gave us a flashing UFO with space aliens. Y&R was clearly on the wrong track with the whiteface man versus the mobsters tale, but somehow it seemed more "reality-based" than what some of the other shows (specifically ABC) were offering.  I remember laughing at Tyrone's rather nerdy and ineffective disguise, but compared with some of the fare we were getting from the competition, it all seemed fairly benign.  Politically correct? Nope.  The least bit believable?  Nope.  But not as weird as little green Martians abducting Fallon, probably.

What was your opinion or the audiences general opinion of Marge? Was everyone outraged that after all these years, they were getting a Kay doppelgänger tale? Those stories are typically far fetched even if I thought Kay/Marge was well done.
