  1. That's it exactly. Even moreso than with Elsie, we, at Bet's best, saw the heartbreak underneath the brass. Susi Hush, the controversial producer of the mid-70s, is the one I credit most (beyond Julie herself of course) for bringing out those layers. She was the one who did the devastating storyline where the son Bet gave up for adoption came to Weatherfield and was disgusted by her drunken behavior, so left without telling her. Then when he was killed she attempted suicide. Another story she did was where the sleazy husband of former barmaid Concepta hit on her and ruined her relationship with a man she was crazy about. Bet told him she was sending a letter to Concepta, putting him in his place, but when she was alone, her confidence crumbled. You simply don't have this layered writing for any character on a soap now, least of all female characters.
  2. That period of Y&R had a lot of dropped stories. Wasn't that also when a mysterious person invited Ryan, Cole, Nina and Victoria to a meal, and it was never mentioned again?
  3. Former NC senator Kay Hagan has died. https://www.politico.com/news/2019/10/28/former-north-carolina-senator-kay-hagan-dies-060172 Hagan unseated longtime media favorite Elizabeth Dole in 2008, and was seen as a very strong campaigner. She had the misfortune of being up in a terrible year for Democrats, but she still only narrowly lost to the current waste of space in that seat. Sorry to hear of her passing.
  4. I've always felt a bit bad for Michael, because she's been getting panned for her acting for 20 years now, but she really just can't act. She never could. She's a beautiful woman with a very unique presence, but she can't act. She would have been better off if the show was done like the old Dynasty, which was more about presence than anything else.
  5. Jared's been kind of a mess over the years - very erratic on social media.
  6. I've lost count of how many times these gerrymandered maps are thrown out and then the ruling is reversed. Kamala Harris had the right idea about the forum. I get the feeling Cory Booker thought he would send some kind of "teachable moment" message and get the moral high ground vote, but there is no teachable moment. Groups that give Trump any support should not be enabled.
  7. The irony is because of the noticeable age difference between Abigail and the actor who played Chris, many ended up seeing her as too young.
  8. By a few years, yes.
  9. I loved Sherry Stringfield so much that I viscerally disliked Liz Keifer for years. It was only during the atrocious "twins by two fathers" story that I came around to Liz, because that story was the absolute pits and she somehow made it work.
  10. I know Silver has spent a lot of time criticizing the media in recent years but I'm genuinely shocked to see that type of comment from him. I wonder if he's moving into the Dave Rubin territory of becoming a conservative for cash.
  11. They were trending on Twitter so I mostly found out from there. I think deep down they're still upset they can no longer call him a friend. They were so far up his ass early in his campaign.
  12. I saw Joe and Mika (Mika as always doing that oddly subservient head-hanging-down whenever Joe speaks - scary) sad-facing and moralizing about the chants. All I can say is:
  13. Not that it is going to be very interesting but I also remember Soap Opera Weekly commenting at the time on some oddly filmed scene of Abigail throwing jelly beans in the air in slow motion, or something along those lines.
  14. Thank you for sharing these treasures with us as always.
  15. A lot of people tend to enjoy these games - it's one of many reasons it's hard to come here now. Anyway, I tried to find some of the episodes you wanted. Unfortunately the episodes she appeared in (August 15-19, October 7) are not online.
  16. The best of Corrie ended in about 1995. Then at a push, early 2005. I will say I thought the episode on Friday where Sinead died was very powerful.
  17. I appreciate the idea of common ground, but the idea that black voters aren't supporting him because he's gay is unfair - if that is what the headline is implying. His record as mayor is likely the main reason.
  18. I haven't seen anything about it. John Conyers passed away.
  19. Bernie is too old to course-correct and clearly doesn't care about doing so. I'm torn between whether Buttigieg could or if he is just feigning an effort to do so. I keep resisting the urge to delve too much into the latter because I don't think he has a real shot anyway, but I guess it depends on how Biden fares in the next few months. Reading about Trump's descriptions of the dead ISIS leader - whimpering and how he 'died like a dog,' all just reminds me of the sadism and callousness of this man and his administration. I'm glad that so many people immediately shut down the rah-rah-rally stuff from the usual suspects by pointing out Trump himself refused to praise Obama for a much bigger strike against terrorism than yesterday. I was very disturbed to read that he didn't tell ANY Democratic leaders of Congress what he was doing. This sets a very dangerous precedent.
  20. I saw some responses to that telling people who were upset that this is what they "need" to hear. Just so disrespectful and arrogant to tell people who have lived their lives in terror that they need to listen to a rich white man tell them they and their parents know nothing.
  21. So tired, if not surprised, by the media pushing the likes of Mattis and John Kelly.
