As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I do like HBS' work in the role, but I think by her last years she did have a more sanctimonious quality that Ellen Dolan tends to get more blame for (probably because Ellen wasn't as warm an actress). I think I enjoy her Margo earlier in her run when she has some drama but balanced with comedy. Speaking of which, she's a bit muggy here, but this little interaction with Barbara at about 10-11 minutes is entertaining and shows just how much their relationship changed after Barbara went bad. (I know this has already been posted a few times - sorry everyone)

General Hospital: August 2023 Discussion Thread
Looking on Twitter I see that there was a strike-mandated montage today to the Carly and Olivia friendship. I didn't even know they were friends. Then again, I've watched about a dozen scenes over the last dozen years. I also saw someone saying if they want to have Portia object to Sprina, they should have her object because of Nik and Gia. I guess Gia just doesn't exist anymore?

@Vee Thanks. That was a longer dive than I had expected from EW in recent years. I'm glad people there are some attempts to restore the channel but I can understand why they are not believing it - I'm really not either. The notion of something being profitable yet being gutted because of the ridiculous salary being given to an executive feels like the final stage towards gutting any and all product as long as a handful of people rake in all the remaining cash. Channels like TCM are a canary in the coal mine, and I'm glad many in Hollywood realized this.- RIP: In Memoriam Thread
I've learned many fascinating things about Friedkin from @Vee over the years, and I'll always be glad I decided to watch Sorcerer a few years ago - a true masterpiece, a visceral experience, and one of the greatest examples that you don't have to have outwardly sympathetic characters to still care about them. For many years my main Friedkin experience was Boys in the Band, which was one of the very first gay-themed films I saw. The film is more often remembered for the bitter stereotypes, but Friedkin also maintained a sense of tenderness - no matter how bitchy Michael was, the ethereally fatigued Frederick Combs was very touching as his friend and lover, there for him to the end. And in spite of the lack of any real intimacy between them onscreen, I was also very caught up in the love story between Keith Prentice, who didn't want to give up other men, and Laurence Luckinbill, who had given up his entire family for Prentice. The final moment between them where they share a phone declaring their love for each other warmed my heart even amidst the messy future they would share. Sorcerer is superb on pretty much every level, a visual feast, the film Friedkin championed the most, and one he should be remembered by. Rarely will you see a film which makes you feel so drawn into a world full of people there is no maudlin attempt to create sympathy for. Nor do, as you sometimes see in movies and shows, they try to make other characters look bad just because they aren't "real" or "cool" or what have you compared to the leading men. These are violent, broken men, killers, but when you watch them lose everything of themselves, over and over, you're still right there with them, to the bitter end.- Another World Discussion Thread

Racist #2 already dropped out of the top 10? How embarrassing. Racist #1 will be there forever, clearly. I know it's not a fantastic song and Dua Lipa's done these many times before, but Dance the Night is such a good little soundtrack gem. I'm glad it made the top 10.- The Doctors Discussion Thread
Kim used to say in interviews that when she didn't like a storyline, she would experiment with her hair. This was during her GL run, but I have to wonder if that was also the case here. I think Kim had her subtle moments as Reva, especially in her first run, but I agree she does good work here. And thanks @dc11786 for adding more context to the scenes. I do think there was story for Althea with Penny's death if she adopted a young girl and became overly focused on her life, but I don't think the show ever did that, aside from some teasing in synopses. I agree killing both her children was too much. The Doctors seemed to have a problem with not wanting its older characters to be matured (similar to what later soaps would do). I guess they did with Carolee and Steve in the show's last few years, at least...?- The Doctors Discussion Thread
Not sure if this episode was already around or not, but someone uploaded it. Another 1981 episode...and a strike episode, always fascinating to see. I skimmed through most of that, but when you see Kim Zimmer with crimped hair you have to stop and watch.- Days: August 2023 Discussion Thread

SOD is lucky to even still be around, no matter who runs it. Just look at what a shell TV Guide has become.- Y&R Promo: 'Will Phyllis pay the ultimate price?'
This isn't a bad promo, as at least it's trying to tell a story instead of just more "here's what we belched out this week," but it shows how exhausted the show feels. It's weird to see Daniel (and in the promo before this, Lily) naturally aging and then going to some of the people who...don't.- Y&R - RIP Sharon Farrell (Flo Webster)
I'd forgotten about that. I wonder if it helped lead to her Y&R casting. Yes, similar to when he brought Morey Amsterdam in. By the time of the MAB era, the inherent self-loathing of soaps meant we were supposed to be awed that Meredith Baxter or Bonnie Franklin (RIP) were slumming, when neither of them had ever been on anything especially astounding either compared to Y&R's golden years.- Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
- Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
I know Raven was one of the main fixtures of EON by this point, but this set of promos is so lopsided in showing her under any circumstances they could find, it veers into mad libs. I wonder if any non-viewers at the time saw these promos and thought, "What the hell is that Raven lady up to?"- All My Children Tribute Thread

CASS WINTHROP: FAMILY (anotherworldhomepage.com) The existence of Cass's brother was mentioned as early as 1988. When Morgan came to Bay City in 1993, it was the first time Cass had seen him in 15 years. In 1994, Cass and Morgan were at odds due to Cass's paranoid belief that Morgan was having an affair with Cass's wife Frankie Frame. But as this misconception was due to Cass's illness it was shortly cleared up. - The Media/Journalism Thread
