  1. Inspired by the bestselling Dawn Cutler series of novels by author V.C. Andrews, Lifetime is set to reenter the V.C.-Verse with the new limited series “V.C. Andrews’ Dawn,” premiering Saturday, July 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT and every Saturday evening after that until Saturday, July 29. Each week, the four-part movie event focuses on one of Andrews’ Dawn Cutler novels, including “Dawn,” “Secrets of the Morning,” “Twilight’s Child,” and “Midnight Whispers,” and delves into the dark and twisted histories of the Cutler, Booth and Longchamp families with actress Brec Bassinger (“Stargirl”) taking on the title role of Dawn Longchamp. She is joined by Emmy winner Donna Mills (“Knots Landing,” “Nope”) as Lillian Cutler. The series also stars Joey McIntyre (New Kids on the Block) as Michael Sutton; Jesse Metcalfe (“Passions,” “Desperate Housewives”) as Ormand Longchamp; Khobe Clarke (“Yellowjackets”) as Jimmy Longchamp; and Emmy nominee Fran Drescher (“The Nanny”) as Agnes Morris. Courtesy of Lifetime Additional cast includes Jason Cermak as Dawn’s father Randolph Cutler; Miranda Frigon as Dawn’s mother, Laura Jean Cutler; Megan Best as Dawn’s teenage daughter Christie; as well as Elyse Maloway (“The Magicians”) and Dane Schioler (Prom Pact) as Dawn’s siblings Clara Jean and Philip Cutler. In addition, Corey Woods plays Dawn’s boarding school roommate, Tricia; and Helena Marie plays Sally Longchamp, Dawn’s adoptive mother. Part 1: Dawn (Saturday, July 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT) Dawn follows the story of Dawn Longchamp (Bassinger), who after growing up in humble surroundings with a very hardworking family including her devoted father Ormand (Metcalfe) and older brother Jimmy (Clarke), suddenly has everything she loves ripped away from her. After discovering the shocking truth about the people who raised her, she is thrust into a new family whose dark and twisted secrets change the course of her life forever. As Dawn struggles to fit in, her wicked grandmother Lillian Cutler (Mills) rules her life with an iron fist and inflicts cruel punishments when Dawn does not follow her strict orders. When Dawn finds herself entrenched in the mysteries surrounding the family, it becomes clear that a dark and inescapable curse looms over the Cutlers. Part 2: Secrets of the Morning (Saturday, July 15 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT) After disturbing details of Dawn’s (Bassinger) past are revealed, she finally has the upper hand with her grandmother Lilian (Mills) and orchestrates her move to New York City to attend the best performing arts school. While residing in a boarding house run by headmistress and aging actress, Agnes Morris (Drescher), Dawn still dreams about Jimmy and the anguished secrets they share. But when Michael Sutton (McIntyre) arrives—a new teacher and Broadway star, he sets his sights on Dawn. Dawn falls under his seductive spell but when he suddenly disappears, Dawn is once again at the mercy of her grandmother’s twisted schemes. Part 3: Twilight’s Child (Saturday, July 22 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT) After being reunited with Jimmy, Dawn is finally free and blissfully happy as Mrs. Longchamp, a wife and mother to her beautiful baby girl, Christie . When Dawn becomes the rightful owner of Cutler’s Cove Hotel, she’s able to turn the business around but can’t seem to escape her grandmother presence and can feel her vengeance from the grave. When Dawn discovers that her brother Philip is still obsessed with her and her spiteful sister Clara’s rage explodes into violence, threatening Dawn’s dream once again. Part 4: Midnight Whispers (Saturday, July 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT) Though Dawn’s daughter Christie (Best) has grown up in a loving home, Christie can feel the dark presence over her and soon is engulfed by a tragic family death. As she looks for solace, she is further shocked to discover her Uncle Philip’s secrets. Fleeing to New York City, she finds her real father and turns to Jimmy’s stepbrother Gavin, who flees with her to The Meadows, the plantation where Christie was born….but The Meadows is blighted by its own dark secrets. Will Christie finally unlock her families’ troubled past and escape the curse that has haunted them for decades? The limited series is executive produced by Merideth Finn, Michele Weiss, Timothy Johnson and Stacy Mandelberg, with Oliver De Caigny as supervising producer and Navid Soofi as a producer. Finn and Weiss also executive produced Lifetime’s “Flowers in the Attic” and “Petals on the Wind.” Associate producers include Thomas Stanford, Grant O’Kane, Tim Spence and Darren Robson. 2. Production on a shortened seventh season of “Venice: The Series” has been put on hold due to the Writers Strike, series co-creator and executive producer Crystal Chappell announced today. Chappell says in a statement published on the show’s official website, “We were all set to lock down the studio and book some flights for the end of July. This schedule is still on the table BUT…nothing will be booked until the strike (WGA, SAG, DGA) is resolved.” She adds, “I simply cannot shoot without Union support. I HOPE that it will be resolved but, in case it isn’t, the shoot will be postponed until it is….” Centering on the life of Gina Brogno (Chappell), a single, gay and successful interior designer living, loving and working in Venice Beach, California, the series tells a diverse story through her family, friends and professional life. Gina is a strong, confident and complex woman who navigates her relations with people through an intense yet thoughtful prism. “Venice: The Series” follows her experiences with her ex-love, Ani (Jessica Leccia), her brother, Owen (Galen Gering) and her father, “The Colonel” (Jordan Clarke) along with a myriad of other characters that make up Gina’s network of relationships. The storyline offers the best of traditional soap romance, love stories, tragic happenings and hairpin turns. Throughout the show’s first six seasons, actors appearing on the series include Nadia Bjorlin, Hillary B. Smith, Wes Ramsey, Michael Sabatino, Tina Sloan, Cady McClain, Michael Corbett, Gregory Zarian, Robert Newman, Shawn Christian, Peter Reckell, Liz Keifer, Annika Noelle, Eric Martsolf, Molly Burnett, Lesli Kay, Christian Le Blanc, Judi Evans and Gina Tognoni, among others. For more information about the series, including how to watch the first six seasons, click here. 3. Last I heard, the show had no plans to recast the role. Things could have changed, but I don't think it's worth recasting unless her final scenes left a window where the character would be needed.
  4. During its earnings call last week, Disney announced plans to remove many streaming shows from Disney+ and Hulu to help mitigate further losses as the company heads into its third quarter. “We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion,” said Christine McCarthy, Disney’s chief financial officer during the call with investors. She noted, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation. Shows expected to be removed from Disney+ include “Big Shot” starring John Stamos (“General Hospital”), “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” starring Josh Duhamel (“All My Children”), “Willow” and “The World According To Jeff Goldblum,” among others. On the Hulu side, the streamer will be saying goodbye to “Y: The Last Man,” “Dollface” and “Love in the Time of Corona,” among others. It’s understood that while many of these shows are being removed to help Disney’s bottom line, many of them ranked among the least-watched (i.e. churned) on their respective platforms as none of the shows received additional seasons after their first or second season concluded. Citing Disney’s plans to “produce lower volumes of content,” the shows listed below are confirmed to be exiting both platforms as soon as next week, Friday, May 26, according to a report by Vulture and Deadline. 5. The same day TMZ broke the story that Haley Pullos (Molly Lansing-Davis, “General Hospital”) had been arrested for her involvement in the April 29 crash that saw her vehicle enter the wrong way onto the eastbound SR-134 freeway before colliding with another vehicle comes word that the actress has been checked into a Malibu rehab facility. According to The Daily Mail, on Wednesday, May 17, Pullos was driven by her father to a Malibu detox and residential treatment facility, which cost roughly $2,600 a week. The outlet notes the location “boasts several alcohol and drug addiction treatments, ranging from a ten-day long detox to a more intensive medication-assisted treatment with a residential option for round-the-clock care. “An intensive outpatient program is then offered as a transition, as well as an aftercare program for those who use the facilities.” Just before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, Pullos reportedly drove her vehicle the wrong way on the 134 freeway before colliding head-on with a 23-year-old male driver of a Kia who suffered major injuries and rushed to an area hospital. Pullos herself required help from the Pasadena Fire Department who used the jaws of life to extract her from the wrecked 2019 Ford she was driving. Before the accident, Pullos was also reportedly involved in a hit-and-run with another vehicle, an Oldsmobile driven by a 27-year-old woman from Fontana in the westbound lane, which did not result in any serious injuries. According to a police report, “It was determined Haley Pullos was involved in a hit and run traffic collision that occurred in the city of Pasadena prior to entering the wrong way onto the eastbound SR-134 freeway.” It’s unclear how long Pullos is expected to remain in the facility but The Daily Mail notes that if she “chooses a longer outpatient treatment of 15 weeks, it could cost up to $28,875.” The other option they point out is a detox of up to ten days which will cost about $3,750, while the available inpatient programs are priced at $5,400 for 90 days.“General Hospital” has temporarily recast the role of Molly Lansing-Davis with newcomer Holiday Mia Kriegel (“Bull,” “Animal Kingdom”). She begins airing next week, the week of May 22, 2023. 7. What a tumultuous ride fans of the CBS drama “S.W.A.T.” have been on these last few weeks. First, the show was awaiting renewal news. Then came the cancellation notice, followed by a last-minute renewal days later, consisting of a shortened seventh and final season with just 13 episodes ordered. Now the show has joined Netflix, where it can grow an even wider audience. As of yesterday, May 17, fans of the Shemar Moore-led series were able to begin streaming all 106 episodes from the first five seasons on the world’s biggest streaming service, with Season 6 episodes set to join the platform later this fall, according to a tweet by series creator Shawn Ryan, who also executive produces the series. In addition to Netflix, “S.W.A.T.” is also available to stream on Hulu and Paramount+, the latter of which has rights to the current season only while the former streams the first three seasons. The Netflix deal, which closed just over a month ago and predates CBS/Sony negotiations over Season 7, allows fans to watch the first five seasons on one platform for the first time. On the show, Moore stars as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, a former Marine and locally born and raised S.W.A.T. sergeant tasked to run a specialized tactical unit that is the last stop in law enforcement in Los Angeles. Torn between loyalty to where he was raised and allegiance to his brothers in blue, Hondo strives to bridge the divide between his two worlds. The series also stars Alex Russell as Jim Street, Jay Harrington as David “Deacon” Kay, Kenny Johnson as Dominique Luca, David Lim as Victor Tan, Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks and Rochelle Aytes as Nichelle, Hondo’s girlfriend, operator of a South LA community center. The sixth season finale of “S.W.A.T.” is set to air on Friday, May 19 on CBS. The episode, entitled “Legacy,” which is part two of a two-part season finale, finds the team working with the DEA and their iron-jawed leader, Mack Boyle (guest star Timothy Hutton), to stop a ruthless cartel boss waging war on the streets of Los Angeles as he exacts revenge on those who killed his son. In announcing its fall schedule for the 2023-2024 broadcast television season, CBS revealed the show would remain in its current Friday at 8:00 p.m. time period, with the expectation that the Writers Strike will be over by that time. 8. Just as the Writers Guild of America (WGA) did before it formally went on strike on Tuesday, May 2, the SAG-AFTRA National Board agreed unanimously to recommend that its members vote to authorize a strike should the union’s forthcoming TV/Theatrical Contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) fail. Negotiations are set to begin on Wednesday, June 7. The current TV/Theatrical Agreement expires at midnight on June 30, 2023. While cautioning that an affirmative vote does not mean a strike would necessarily happen, the union notes an overwhelming vote in favor of a strike bits members would allow the National Board to call one if deemed necessary during the negotiations process. The action comes following a unanimous agreement by the TV/Theatrical negotiating committee that the strike authorization would give the union maximum bargaining leverage as it enters this round of negotiations with the AMPTP. SAG-AFTRA represents more than 160,000 entertainment and media professionals. Fran Drescher Courtesy of Tinseltown/Shutterstock “For the first time in a very long time, our member leadership stands in solidarity at the negotiating committee and the National Board levels on moving forward with a strike authorization. We must get all our ducks in a row should the need present itself, said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “The prospect of a strike is not a first option, but a last resort. As my dad always says, ‘Better to have and not need than to need and not have!’ Therefore, I implore eligible members to follow the leads of both the negotiating committee and the National Board with an unprecedented show of solidarity and make three a charm with an emphatic ‘yes’ for a strike authorization vote!” SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland explained, “Strike authorization sends an important message during the negotiations process. A ‘yes’ vote gives the National Board the power to call a strike if the AMPTP does not negotiate fairly in our upcoming bargaining. This will be a seminal negotiation that will determine the future of what it means to be a working performer. We must be ready to fight to secure a meaningful deal for our members.” In its reporting, SAG-AFTRA notes that earning a living as a professional performer has become increasingly difficult, with both inflation and the streaming ecosystem undercutting compensation — all the while, corporate profits and executive pay at studios continue to rise. Add to this the unregulated use of artificial intelligence and the burdens of the industrywide shift to self-tape, the outlook for working actors becomes unsustainable without transformative change. As a reminder, a successful strike authorization vote doesn’t initiate a strike. Instead, the strike authorization permits the National Board to declare a strike if the studios and streaming companies fail to negotiate fairly with SAG-AFTRA for the benefit of its members. Eligible members will be sent postcards starting Thursday, May 18 with instructions on how to vote, and voting will close at 5 p.m. PT on Monday, June 5. The current SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Agreement expires at midnight on June 30, 2023. More information is available at sagaftra.org/contracts2023, including the Strike Authorization Vote FAQs. SAG-AFTRA is the actors union representing actors appearing in TV/Theatrical productions, including “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of our Lives,” “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless.” A strike, should one eventually be called, will force a production shutdown of all TV/Theatrical productions requiring on-camera work by union members. 10. The daytime broadcast shows had an atypical week during the week of May 8-12, 2023, where very few shows showed improvement compared to last week and last year, while others saw a downtick due to sports-related preemptions. “The View” (2.233 million) was the standout performer overall, gaining +51,000 viewers over its week ago performance and was up three-hundredths in Women 18-49 and two-hundredths in Women 25-54. Compared to its performance one year earlier, “The View” saw the smallest decline among all of the daytime broadcast shows in Total Viewers, dropping just -47,000 viewers year over year. The show was up year-over-year in both of the key sales demographics. All other shows were flat or down in the key demos and among Total Viewers. Despite airing just two all-new episodes, “The Talk” (1.421 million) saw a week-to-week decline of just -6,000 viewers, the smallest week-to-week decline among all of the daytime broadcast shows. The series was up three-hundredths in Women 18-49 rating and four-hundredths in Women 25-54 rating. What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of May 8-12, 2023 in Women 18-49 Rating, Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance last year (2022) and two years ago (2021), respectively. At press time, Shriner’s tweet has garnered over 270,000 views, nearly 4,000 likes, and over 2,200 comments, many of which are from fans riled up in their disappointment over the show allegedly writing the character out. Shriner made a similar claim last year when he tweeted, “Scott’s run is done, so heading to Florida to ride Vespa around the tropics.” It’s understood that although Shriner has played the role of Scott Baldwin on “General Hospital” since 1977, the actor is on recurring status with the series and is only used when there is a need for the character. 13. Last week, in a statement released to Soap Opera Digest, “General Hospital” star Haley Pullos (Molly Lansing-Davis) announced she’d be taking time off from the daytime drama series after being involved in an automobile accident. “I’m doing okay, but I am going to need a little time to recover,” she said. Now comes word that Pullos was arrested for her involvement in the accident, charged with felony DUI. According to a police report obtained by TMZ, on Saturday, April 29, Pullos was on a Pasadena freeway “when she swerved, flew over the dividing barrier, and into oncoming traffic.” She later collided head-on with another vehicle which was going 60 mph. The outlet also published pictures from the scene of the accident. Pullos is said to have been unable to exit her vehicle and required help from firefighters before being transported by ambulance to the hospital. Allegedly, while being transported, a firefighter was “assessing her injuries when she struck him and shouted, ‘This is a $400 f***ing shirt!’” After searching her vehicle, police are said to have found “weed edibles and mini-bottles of tequila.” Upon arriving at the hospital, Pullos was met by officers who at that point determined she’d been driving under the influence, citing the “smell of alcohol on her breath, slurred speech, and watery eyes.” Pullos was arrested for felony DUI while still at the hospital. She was eventually sedated after “she got aggressive and fought hospital staff.” As for the driver of the other vehicle, they reportedly survived the accident but were hospitalized with major injuries. Before the accident, Pullos was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run traffic collision, according to information from police to TMZ. On Sunday, May 14, the Australian soap “Neighbours” unveiled the first photo of the actress on the set while holding up the iconic street sign and standing beside actors Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne who play Karl Kennedy and Susan Kennedy, respectively, on the series. 20. Just days after it was announced that “The Kelly Clarkson Show” would be officially moving production from Los Angeles to New York City for its fifth season this fall comes word of toxicity behind the scenes at the daytime talk show, according to a bombshell report by Rolling Stone, published on Friday. While staffers say Kelly Clarkson herself is “fantastic,” some of her producers, including executive producer/showrunner Alex Duda, get the brunt of the accusations. “I think Alex Duda’s a monster,” a former employee told Rolling Stone. “I have a friend who’s an executive producer who warned me about taking this job, because apparently she has done this on every show she’s worked on.” Among the 11 current and former employees interviewed for the piece, they all seemed to agree that Clarkson was unaware of any problems for lower-level staffers, who the outlet claims have had to take on additional work outside of the show to help them pay their bills, including as Uber Eats drivers, dog walkers, and even babysitters, among other work. There’s also frustration that despite some leaving the show for other careers, the “toxic” culture still remained despite a number of complaints to Human Resources about the behaviors. A former staffer who had taken a leave of absence from the show due to mental health matters stemming from the treatment they received by producers, including bullying and intimidation, says they went to see a psychiatrist for the first time in their entire life because they “truly couldn’t handle it mentally.” Additionally, the same staffer noted that despite working in the entertainment industry for several years, their time at “The Kelly Clarkson Show” was “by far the worst experience I’ve ever had in my entire life.” They added, “It deterred me from wanting to work in daytime ever again. When I say I was traumatized, I was really traumatized.” Some of the accusations brought against “The Kelly Clarkson Show” draw eerily similar to those brought against “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which led to the firing of three executive producers and the eventual end of the daytime talk show. There were also similar complaints of toxicity at Telepictures, the production company behind some of the longest-running daytime talk shows in daytime TV history, including “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” and “The Tyra Banks Show,” the latter of which is where Duda worked before taking the job at “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” In the Rolling Stone piece, the continuation of similar patterns at all those shows is blamed on the recycling of the same executive producers and showrunners who go from show to show while bringing their experiences and behaviors along with them. While Clarkson and producer NBCUniversal are said to have not provided comment ahead of Rolling Stone’s publishing its investigation, the two parties have since issued formal responses. In a lengthy post on Instagram, Clarkson said, “In my 20 years in the entertainment industry, I’ve always led with my heart and what I believed to be right. I love my team at ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show,’ and to find out that anyone is feeling unheard and or disrespected on this show is unacceptable.” She noted, “I have always been, and will continue to be, committed to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment at ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show.’ As we prepare for a move to the East Coast, I am more committed than ever to ensuring that not only our team that is moving, but also our new team in NY, is comprised of the best and kindest in the business.” Stating that those in leadership positions need to do better, always, Clarkson revealed that she and her senior staff will partake in leadership training so that everyone can be/become “the best version of ourselves.” She says, “Part of that build will include leadership training for all of the senior staff, including myself. There is always room to grow and ensure we are all being/becoming the best version of ourselves in any business, especially when it comes to leadership, to ensure that any notion of toxicity is eradicated.” As for NBCUniversal, a statement from the company says, “We are committed to a safe and respectful work environment and take workplace complaints very seriously, and to insinuate otherwise is untrue. When issues are reported, they are promptly reviewed, investigated and acted upon as appropriate. The Kelly Clarkson Show strives to build a safe, respectful and equitable workplace that nurtures a culture of inclusivity and creativity.” For more information on the Rolling Stone investigation, including further implications cited by current and former employees of the talk show, read the full story. PureFlix will become part of the merged company, with Great American Media contributing two cable networks (Great American Family and Great American Living) and a FAST channel (Great American Adventures). Great American Media will retain a majority interest in the merged company and oversee the independent organization’s day-to-day management. While terms of the deal were not disclosed, Great American Media President and CEO, Bill Abbott, will serve as CEO of the merged entity, reporting to the company’s board of directors. The new company will build on the multi-faceted, multi-channel family and faith media brands in the portfolio. Closing of the deal is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. “In a media environment where programming and distribution business models are in a constant state of flux, this agreement provides a rare opportunity to maximize our potential with the expertise, market knowledge and content creation capabilities of a world class partner like Sony Pictures,” said Abbott in a statement. “This merger will allow us to further our commitment to original, quality content and makes Great American Media and Pure Flix leaders in a large and under-served market.” Nadia Bjorlin, David A.R. While at ABC News, Pilgrim has covered breaking news stories, including the recent mass shooting in Nashville, the Alex Murdaugh trial, the Charlottesville rally, the 2020 presidential election, the murder of George Floyd, and Hurricanes Matthew, Harvey, Irma, Maria and Michael. Before ABC News, Pilgrim started in local news making stops in Bluefield, West Virginia; Columbia, South Carolina; Charlotte, North Carolina; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A relative newbie to ABC News, Morgan joined the network in 2022 as a correspondent based in Los Angeles. Since joining ABC News, Morgan has covered many breaking news stories, including the recent severe weather in the West. Before ABC News, Morgan was co-anchor of the weekday 4:30-7:00 a.m. and 11 a.m. newscasts at KCBS in Los Angeles where he also reported for all CBS News networks’ broadcasts and platforms. Before that, he was a CBS News correspondent. He covered stories ranging from destructive wildfires in California to the deadly Las Vegas mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival. He also covered both RNC and DNC 2016 political conventions. Benitez has been ABC News’ transportation correspondent since 2020, covering aviation during the industry’s near-total collapse in the pandemic and space at the onset of America’s private space race, plus the auto industry and railroads. Since joining ABC News in 2013, Benitez has notably covered the Pulse nightclub shooting, El Chapo’s underground escape from a Mexican prison and the Boston Marathon bombing. He has a long history of breaking exclusive investigative stories, and some of these investigations have led to important safety recalls. Before joining ABC News in 2013, he was a reporter for WFOR-TV in Miami.
