It's been a while since I watched those episodes, but I don't remember him being sympathetic. Yeah, he was genuinely in love with Sharina, but didn't he try to keep their child Victoria from inheriting money from him? Sharina's brother had forced him to write that down and he didn't want it found? Faking his death screwed Amanda over because his will was invalid. Not to mention his other family might have liked to have known he wasn't dead.
For me, one of the problems with that story is they tried to make the brother like the villain, even though he was right about everything. Sharina could have had a much better, more dignified life if she hadn't gone to America with Brandon while segregation existed. Brandon only married Alan and Alex's mother because she was from a rich, upper-class family.
They tried to make it into this star-crossed lovers thing, but I didn't buy it. I honestly don't see much to admire here.
