BTG: First-ever role recast!

People saying it is no big deal that the role was recast...

Sure that happens in daytime, but in the first month? and a recast that no one was calling for?

When there are there are others eg Martin, Diego,Derek that need a recast before Ted.

Maybe in time Maurice will say more.

Not just for this unnecessary recast, but a culmination of things. She said she's been planning this series for years, but the ages of multiple characters are out of whack. You think such easy fixes would have been fine tuned. Then, bringing on Cady McClain as Dani's best friend in rumoured rewrites, when she had much better friendship chemistry with Vanessa, and then saying Vanessa was Nicole's best friend, when they've only had one scene together. And not to be shady, but of all the actresses, MVJ has practically admitted that Karla Mosley is her muse that she wanted no matter what? A very odd choice to be so passionate about when, in my opinion obviously, Mosley is hit and miss at the best of times.

And if the speculation that Maurice Johnson was just a placeholder, things could and should have been re-written for Ted to only debut when Robinson was available. It would have been easy to have him off-screen until then.

That's not unheard of in daytime, though. It's happened a number of times with casting one actor when they intended another.

At the end of the day, it's a new soap and in that context none of this (or anything you mentioned) is unusual. It's just been awhile since any of us have experienced it.

If you mean the guy on the left, yes, I know who Tom is. Or anyone who watches HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER do.

But thanks. I thought it was that show.

I agree as well. But I'm sure MVJ has a plan for him.

Same.

Yeah, and he seems to have left on good terms so how he has acted on top on that (engaging with the audience) will totally work for him.

I can also see it being a case of Robinson was not available at the time, but is now. And that was who MVJ had in mind for the role. Wouldn't be the first time in this business.

Which is exactly what a new show wants. Like I said the other day, while most of us are used to it, there is a suitable amount of people who this is their first soap or they have not had a soap in soooooooo long, they might have forgotten some of these soap tropes. It also means...MVJ DONE DID IT, tapping into a new audience for soaps where other soaps can't even. So these newbies, I am sure, all will have to wing it.

Yep. Indifference is the enemy in this case. And the audience is far from that.

Them turtlenecks. ;D

What other Soap has that been done at? @Taoboi I honestly have never seen that happen. I heard many stories about ideal castings missing out on the role though, but to let the actor go cause now the other is available is a little unprofessional to me.

I could see if Robinson originated the role, and left the show, and he was booked when they approached him to come back, but this is a new show, and if the talent I wanted couldn't join at the beginning. I either rework it so that the character is off-screen until he's ready or he just loses out. This is distasteful IMHO.

If I were Maurice I would never come back to Daytime.

That's going to irk me because I feel like it's on the tip of my mind's tongue, but I can't say when. Or perhaps I'm thinking of the incidents where a role gets recast on a soap, the recast is successful...only for the first actor to come back and the recast gets dropped.

And I know it's happened in primetime/movies.

I'm sure someone will correct me.

I'm not going to go chapter and verse through all of the examples, but it's happened a number of times at many of the classic soaps lol. And certainly it's happened like this at the beginning of a show's run, with some actors never even making it onscreen after taping and others being replaced within days or weeks.

I like Johnson, but them's the breaks with any new soap or any soap period. Recasts and firings happen. And will keep happening.

    • Thanks, Paul, I did not know about his interest in the comedic elements or that he was one of our many people who came from the network! I have always liked Marlena de la Croix's writing, which is not to say I 100% agree with her. She's been a member of my FB soap group for a good long time & she actually posts, which I love. Recently I posted about an e-copy of Robert LaGuardia's SOAP WORLD that is free to borrow like a library e-book but on the Internet Archive site & I posted that at the time of their publications, all of his soap opera books were the gold standard.  She immediately posted about "Bob" who was her close friend & how much she still misses him to this day & that he loved to talk soaps & was also a nice guy, etc. which I was over the moon to have her share about the author & his time etc. like that!!!
    • Just more RTD ego trips, seemingly his main reason for coming back.
    • Thanks @Paul Raven  That's a lovely writeup. Do fans feel it was warranted?

I really wonder why they chose to write this whole ‘John is getting better’ part of the storyline, especially since we all knew what was really going to happen. And I hope we find out the answer someday. But as tough and as tearjerking as today was, it was also really beautiful. And the acting, even though a lot of it if not all of it was real, was spectacular. The flashbacks were beautiful too. I honestly can’t even describe how much I enjoyed today.  Having so many of John and Marlena’s scenes be focused on the two of them and their love story was the right decision. It was a fitting end to John and Marlena. And I’m also glad that John and Steve got to have one last goodbye after everything that happened. As for Bo and Hope and their family, I did think that some parts were a little unnecessary but I really enjoyed Bo’s dream and his reunion with Zack. The acting playing Zack actually did a pretty good job too. Everybody encouraging Bo to fight was really the right decision in this storyline as well.  As for the final minutes of today, be prepared. I actually have tears running down my cheeks as I write this.

    • I still continue to think that Dani is written like she's been in a soap opera for 20 seasons and she's come to a point where she's completely spent storyline wise. It's a vibe I'm getting. Characterization wise... It's like she is either incredibly stupid... or just plain delusional and out of touch with reality. I choose to pick the second option. Also... to me... she has not been entertaining for months now. Ever since they decided to jump straight to... she's an alcoholic... which we didn't need at this point... the character has struggled. Her initial Ex-wife-from-hell bravado was more interesting, even though cliche.  I expect her to improve in the coming months... they used her as a clown type of character to draw in views. Now I need to see the human being. If there is one, behind the soap opera caricature.
    • A full 1973 episode that looks fantastic in color.
