Happy Birthday Johnny! Too bad you had to endure a Jamey episode today. And had to spend so much time with Leo.

Johnny does have good taste in cakes though

Today was a perfect example of what I mean when I mentioned how lousy Jamey episodes are. Do they really expect fans to believe that even Seth Burns didn’t see that Alex was screwing a white girl? Or that he doesn’t know who’s playing Faith?

That’s just bad, lazy writing.

And, since when does the hospital have a PA system?

The fact that we don’t know if Johnny and Joy slept together is kind of interesting though. I do like the mystery of it. And today’s ending wasn’t bad either. But damn, the buildup these last few weeks was horrendous.

Today's episode was okay.  I really just don't understand the whole Chanel/Johnny thing.  It's something that can so easily be explained and it went from 0 to 100 in one scene.  Stupid.  I think Johnny did sleep with Joy.  That's the only way any drama is pulled from this.  The actress that plays Joy reminds me a bit of Amber Tamblyn.  She looks like her.

I am also not gonna lie.  Seth Burns is my new favorite character.  He cracks me up.  So dumb, but so stoic and deadpan in his delivery.

Weird Marlena was called away before Johnny's birthday celebration.  Did Deidre have something else to do that day lol?

Hmmm… two different location shots of the hospital now?

The hospital scenes were good. I liked the confrontation between Johnny and Chanel. How this all came together was the biggest mistake in this storyline.

But once again, Leo was unnecessary. I miss the days when characters with no purpose got cut.

The character of Joy seems to be ok so far. She doesn’t seem to be playing this all like a big joke and I appreciate that. But yeah, the writing for Nancy is making me cringe a little. Unfortunately, I expected that. Too bad Chloe’s not in Salem anymore. Her part in Joy’s storyline could add another dynamic to it.

As for Abe/JR, I almost want to apologize to him myself.

Interesting episode.  Some scenes were quite good like Joy/Nancy and Chanel/Johnny, but there was not a single reason to have Leo on the show today.  Bonnie/Leo spent, what, 3 scenes talking about how good Chanel's cake was?  Ugh.

I've liked what I have seen from the actress that plays Joy.  We will see where this story goes.

Since Seth Burns is my new MVP I had to laugh when Stephanie said they had met before in a one on one PR zoom meeting about the show and he said he still thought she was an actress anyway lol.  What?

The best part of the last three episodes has been the return of JJ.

Carson Boatman sucks. He desperately needs acting lessons(coach).

Looks like Casey is on contract. He's excited about his new storyline with the new writers.

I just hope JJ doesn't become a cop again.

Much like the earlier iteration of Holly, I'd like him to go back to being messy and a bit of a "F"-up.

I've been bored by reformed Tate, Johnny, Xander, and Tripp.  We need an anti-hero who isn't evil, but is a little duplicitous.  Sort of like a younger version of Jack.  I also think that after seeing the actor in interviews, JJ could be funnier and more charming as a not-so-serious dude.  And I think that the portmanteaus for JJ and Joy could be fun.

We've been eager for Johnny to find a friend, and JJ could be a good ally.

This is good news. I’ve always enjoyed Casey Moss and JJ. I thought Johnny would be a little messier like early JJ but he’s so blah. It’s actually amazing with who Johnny’s parents and grandparents are, that he’s so Blah. But I think it might be Carson as well.

The one thing l’ll give this Body&Soul mess is that, as awful as it is, it’s not gross and cruel like the Craig/Nancy storyline or the Dimitri storyline.

It just needed to be written a lot better.

That would be nice lol if he had a friend, maybe he wouldn’t have to jumped the wrong conclusions about Chanel so quickly.

But a JJ/Joy/Johnny/Chanel/Alex/Stephanie mess could be nice as well.

This is not absolving Ron and the horrible writing he gave Nancy, but I always thought the writing for Nancy in general throughout the years has been erratic at best.   It seems like every writer has a different take on her.  She teeters the line of villain and heroine and it definitely changes every time she reappears.  Ron made her look dumb in the Craig/Nancy/Leo story and that was horrible.  I just still don't have a clear take on who Nancy is at her core to this day.

Btw the Not Abigail reveal was a dull mess.

Billy Flynn totally tanked his scenes.

Annalynne tried her hardest but the story stunk. She couldn't save it either.

Other than plotline, what is stopping Xander from contacting Rolf directly about the cure for Sarah?

I know this a device to force the merger of Dimera and Titan, but Xander has the money to buy out Rolf.

Some initial thoughts.   1) a Who's who back in the day with an assortment of well known performers. 2) Surprised Debra Messing would agree to play a conservative character 3) Not surprised a network didn't pick this up because showing a conservative that is human/likable is a no no in Hollywood LOL
    • Yes from when they went on Let’s Make a Deal too. Pam stole Forrester designs for Jackie M. Of course a month later we saw Nick, Lesley, Owen, and Bridget all exit in the same episode.
    • Great pairing that seemed to come out of the blue! Around that time, it felt like Sheffer/Goutman didn’t really know what to do with Emily or Hal. And KM and BH had surprisingly great chemistry. It was good for Emily especially because she was coming off those unsympathetic years with the Tom affair and then running the Intruder and essentially just being a busybody.
    • I think the issue with Lulu is less the character (which was the issue in the Julie Berman days under Guza II) and more the lack of nuance. The current GH team rarely writes nuance for any character or at least can't sustain it for long, or they reserve it for a favored few. I also think the rooting interest at GH BTS often remains on preferred characters or actors - BLQ/Setton - vs. Laura's kids. So it's easy to make Lulu the heavy if you think Brook Lynn and Chase are the money on this show. I don't, but I think FV does. And that's not to say I think Amanda Setton is bad in the role, or that I would get rid of BLQ. I don't trend towards either (though I do think that if Setton's personal beliefs keep getting in the way of material I would reluctantly recast). I think Brook Lynn is essential to use as a lead presently. But I don't think it needs to be the black and white dichotomy of suffering young matriarch BLQ and aggressor Lulu. While it's good that unlike in the Guza years they can recognize that Lulu can be obnoxious and rash, can be her own worst enemy and that that is part of the character, it can be toned down or given more layers than it has of late. There's nothing wrong there the writing can't fix.
    • 1999: I just watched it. It felt so primetime. La Lucci is making history. Aretha's daydreaming segment. @Contessa Donatella Thank you, my love. So helpful and informative as always. adding them to my queue.
    • I know this isn’t a usual or anywhere near universal take, but I loved the relatively brief Hal/Emily relationship/marriage more than I ever thought I would have with KMH/BH.
    • In my field (not that) I've written my share of dreck when it's what people wanted vs. something good. In the end what matters is the check. These pilots may not be great, but whether or not those writers intended otherwise they got paid.
    • I think there is plenty to critique and/or roast about the show, but I think there's also good bones and a lot of progressive improvement. It's the Bell/B&B formula and house style that is hardest for it to shake and the most necessary IMO, as well as some dead weight actors or characters, but that formula also apparently works for a lot of general viewers and I suspect CBS. OTOH it's also very modern in certain ways (sometimes overly hip dialogue, and some story) that still make it feel like a show that's bouncing between distant past staples of soap opera fundamentals and the present moment. And the old fashioned product placement is fun but also so goofy, while material like June is hysterical. Imagine leading with 'the underpass is where I live, and I like it there!' It's an unusual show in that way, because its identity and tone is still not fully formed. You don't know what it'll be. But that's normal at this juncture. The closest thing to a glimpse of the future foundation, I think (besides the obvious core family setup that's been there since Day 1), is the rivalry and future familial bond - and likely love/hate relationship - between Kat and Eva. A la many central sisters or siblings throughout soap history.
    • I loved Kelley Menighan! She was an MVP, especially during the show’s last few years. I always looked forward to anything she did with MM, BH, CZ, MW,  and the two grownup Alisons. Wasn’t a big fan of her with RH’s Paul. I always admired how she balanced being a vixen and being neurotic.
