Sisters Discussion Thread

Although I could see how Reed #1 that was in season 1 could morph/evolve into Reed #2 that came into play during season 2.

To be fair, when the switch happened you had barely known Reed #1 so it wasn't that jarring. It feels like a tradition to switch up barely recurring characters personalities once they get more storylines. The issue is that once Reed #2 had not only an established actress, she also had a solid personality from seasons 2-5. So when Reed #3 happened it was just jarring - her actions made no sense from what she was portrayed as earlier. It was never even properly explained what changed except she just kind of woke up one day and decided to be a spoiled brat again essentially.

This is all so interesting to read this thread. in the early 2000s, there were daily reruns of Sisters on Lifetime or Soapnet (or both). That is how I watched the entire series. I wasn't on any messageboards that discussed it, and didn't follow industry news, so I wasn't aware of anything behind-the-scenes at that time.

It was one of my favorite shows but I had nobody to discuss it with. I haven't seen it since, but I adored Sela Ward as Teddy, and never forgot her.

It's been over 20 years since I've seen the show, but I appreciate reading this thread. I remember the recasting of Reed was confusing, I loved Ashley Judd in the role.

The Cat/Reed cousin relationship in the final season seemed a complete rewrite since the two seemed chummy/close in seasons 2 to 4.

I agree with both these statements, lol.

It would've made more sense to say Reed returned home (with Halsey) after catching Kirby in bed with another woman. Naturally, Alex would want to help her daughter and granddaughter, but Reed is determined to make it on her own, taking the job at the Sweet Sixteen only after hitting the pavement gets her nowhere. In the meantime, you still could have a rivalry between Cat and Reed by setting up a triangle between them and Billy.

I think it was Lifetime as I watched the show in repeats again (I stopped after the first 3-4 seasons). Nice to see another fan.

Another thing on Sisters I've never forgotten is the early episode where Teddy led a protest the others eventually got involved with, and she kept saying, "I don't want to take a trip on the SS Censorship."

Watching a rerun of "Alice" this morning, it struck me: Diane Ladd, who played Belle Adderley #2 on "Sisters," also played Belle Dupree on "Alice" (after originally playing Flo in the movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," upon which the sitcom was based). Furthermore, both "Sisters" and "Alice" were/are WB-produced shows (and maybe taped on the same lot?). Coincidence? Probably, lol.

I forgot Diane was on Sisters. A shame she didn't stay longer as that show was perfect for her.

Teddy was actually a toxic and unlikable character so it was smart of the show to cast Sela Ward (who they wanted for the Frankie character originally) as her because she helped bring out the likable tendencies when the character was a psycho in the first season or two of the show.

Out of all the characters, I think the character that evolved/changed the most from Season 1 episode 1 to the series finale was Alex. Her journey during the show's run was the one consistent thing that the show runner/writers didn't ruin. She started out as a typical Doctor's wife and over time and adversity became the person she secretly always wanted to be. I did smile a little when Alex mentioned in season 1 that her favorite store was Price Town and she ended up meeting, falling in love, and marrying the owner of Price Town down the road.

People trash on Frankie, but I thought that Julianne Phillips was a pretty good actress and she got to handle a lot of meaty stuff as Frankie.. and she was the one to save the Sweet Sixteen (I always wanted to go there.. it looked fun).

i watched sisters at the time, but remember very little of the characters and stories. what i do remember was a episode titled, ‘one fine day,’ which, as i recall, referenced the song several times. but, when they finally played the song, it wasn’t the familiar version by the chiffons, but a cover.

i was reminded of this as i was watching an episode of ‘gilmore girls’ — lorelai‘s engagement party — which included the original ‘one fine day,’ along with a few others. guess ‘gilmore girls’ had the bigger music budget:)

I'd agree with that, even if they seemed to run out of story a bit by the end. I thought she had the best love interests too. Not the most dashing but the most durable. I was disappointed she didn't stay with the plumber/royalty/whatever, Victor, but she had good chemistry with Robert Klein too. And David Dukes was wonderful as Wade.

Now that you mention it, I remember Georgie in flashback singing "Downtown" to herself, but they never used the song.

I think the issue with Frankie is that for me, she seemed to fizzle out largely as a character post-baby. The Sweet Sixteen storyline didn't seem as much as storyline as a way for the characters to get a central hub to hang out at. I really didn't miss her once she was gone for that reason - she had not been providing a lot of stuff to the sister dynamic for a while when she was written off imho.

I don't know when Julianne Phillips flagged the producers that she wouldn't renew her contract when it was up, so that might've been a part of it. I'd assume by the time they introduced Charley they knew she was out the door.
