I enjoy Adam more than I did Marcus. As far as Nikolas goes, so far I have enjoyed Huss more than any of the recasts. I will forever miss Tyler though.

I appreciate when these actors join the show and clearly want to be there. It’s much more refreshing than watching Maurice go through bouts of clearly not caring.

It’s kind of like Laura Wright. She’s always shown up, and acted her scenes no matter how strong the writing or her scene partner is. She won me over as a Carly recast because she is talented and clearly wants to be there.

Yeah, it's refreshing to see someone actively doing their job and wanting to be there. I don't think anyone will embody the role like Tyler.

I feel the same about LW.  She's not my favorite Carly by any stretch, but she shows up to do her job and gives it her all.  Which is still very good.

I think LW has found her groove over the years and settled into what works for her. She’s always committed, which shows on a show where so many aren’t. There was an era in her career though (at GL and her first few years on GH) where it felt like she had picked up a little too much from working with Kim Zimmer for so long and could be very shrill as a result, but I think she’s found her balance since then. Her Carly still doesn’t feel like the true essence of the character to me, but I accept her and half of that is the writing.

She has an all time great head of hair!

All four of the Carly’s gave different interpretations, LW just came in at a time when Carly was untouchable in the writing. The height of the Sonny/Carly/Jason triad. So it made me have a hard time reconciling a Carly who has everything with where she came from. But Laura Wright is a pro, and the show has been lucky to have her.

Truthfully, I can’t imagine Sarah playing the Carly that existed about a year into TB’s version through today. And I can’t imagine either of them doing what SJB did to create her.

I've said it before, but I don't think it would be difficult for either of the other two Carlys to take up the role again. I think Sarah especially has modulated aspects of her GH work in other characters, even when the roles didn't work out; she can add a gloss. Based on characters like Claudia or Madison on DOOL I think she could play the Carly that became a lux hotelier or diner owner and mother of several kids but is still trailer trash underneath. I think even Tamara could swing it. But ultimately the character could be directed back towards the actor's strengths over time, not vice versa.

That said I don't think Laura gives an unrecognizable performance as Carly. Particularly in the Guza years she could still have a very hard edge at times, she could still be dangerous. She just got money and a rich husband. It's the writing in the last 10+ years that at times makes Carly unrecognizable IMO.

There was a time I thought LW played Carly like the most popular head cheerleader/mean girl in high school, which I thought totally went against the grain of the poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks and antiestablishment vibe SJB embedded into the character. But then, Carly did become the establishment on this show.

The more I dwell on it, I think SBJ was just a very rare and atypical soap actress, much like Judith Light was on OLTL in the late 70’s. In turn, that’s part of the charm that made their characters stand out and resonate in a way they couldn’t with others actresses in their respective roles.

Carly had become the establishment by the time Tamara's Carly was in full bloom as the mob wife with Sonny, I think. And certainly Sarah's Carly flaunted the power once she got it. So I thought it was simply Carly emulating what she'd always wanted to be, no matter who was in the role.

Plus, I do feel like sometime within the last year they tried to re-write Carly back into the character she was when she came into town, but for so long she was written so differently it was... jarring. Plus, they fact they've made Carly "untouchable" is a problem. There is no dynamic, writing-wise, within the role and it shows. The problem is not Laura Wright: it's the writing for the character. Of course casting does change a character, to a specific point over time, but the core of a character shouldn't change, and it has with Carly within the last 10+ years as you've noted.

At the risk of contradicting myself and my previous posts, is this just perhaps Carly's natural evolution over time?  I still think it's a different character than SJB played, but the woman has multiple kids and grandkids at this point and is in her 50's now.  The core of the character may have changed a bit, but she certainly hasn't been a down on her luck, hardscrabble character in 20 years now.  She's been married to 2 millionaires and is well received all over town.  I don't know if this is the trajectory I would have taken Carly on but it makes sense she lost some of her edge.

    • I do think she's been pretty wrecked, having tried to kill someone in cold blood, letting her whole family (including the woman pregnant with her great-grandchild) get charged or questioned, and having no remorse, but it doesn't matter as much because Kathy has not existed as a character since Gillian's return anyway.  There are reasons to bring Max back, like Lauren and his not knowing he had a child with Linda, but he is exhausted, with Jake Wood phoning it in years before he left.  I am a little surprised about Zoe because Michelle Ryan said for years she didn't want to return, to the point of even asking the show to recast the role, but I guess this may only be a short stint. I wouldn't be shocked if they kill Zoe off.
    • HAHAHA. Yeah, that's my bad. I misread that line. Sorry about going into "Unnecessary" detail about my username. Anyway, I love the story behind your Username.    reading on my phone...

    • Completely agree with you. I think Bonita Brisker has been really good as Sharon. What Anita did was obviously awful, so she doesn't need to reign anything in. We're getting a good look at someone who's struggled in life compared to Anita "We're the Duprees!" Williams.   -- Anita is starting to look foolish for dredging all this up just so she  can get her ass back on stage. Is she so delusional she doesn't realize how she hurt Sharon and Tracy? -- Anita's line to Vernon "How can I expect Sharon to forgive me when I haven't forgiven myself" struck me as really selfish. After all that with Sharon, Anita again made it all about herself. -- Does anyone really believe Anita wants equal billing if the Articulettes reunite?  -- Colby Muhammad continues to be a standout. Her Kat more than holds her own with Leslie. -- The writing was very good for the father/daughter scene between Ted and Eva. It wasn't so good between Ted and Martin in their father/son scene. It didn't play like family to me, especially when Ted referred to "my wife" when talking about Nicole to Martin. -- Overall, a very solid show today.
    • I honestly do not see the point of Max coming back again. Zoe does not surprise me. I've been waiting for that since Bionic Woman flopped in the US, frankly. I'm not against it vs. some other pointless returns. Some returns work and some don't, some are just there. Like, am I grateful that Kathy is alive? Yes, absolutely. Do I love any of her stories? No. But she's not utterly destroyed, she's just there.
    • I think Frank probably wanted to try for Jonathan with Kate Mansi. I actually can't knock the idea of a Lucky/Kristina affair or flirtation on paper, as a romantic obstacle to LNL2, but not with the characters in the places they are at present or have been over the last few years. It would be a mistake to do right now and would poison the well. I think Jonathan probably made it clear when he came back that he wanted what had been promised to him years ago with Elizabeth, and between his not being one of FV's preferred focal leads and Liz being a grudging afterthought if she's not with one of his OLTL stars, I suspect FV was content to leave them where they are vs. where they should be, which is central on the show. It's like I said a few days ago: A lot of this is how Lulu has always been. But back in the day the issue was that Lulu (and Carly) were deified for it, whereas now it's that Lulu is just used as the heavy because FV has a preexisting favoritism for Setton/BLQ. And that's a waste of a key character and talent, namely Alexa Havins.
    • Melanie Smith was very difficult to replace, but as KMH did last for a long time, she clearly managed to do so. I preferred Melanie, but the main issue with Kelley is I just think she was horribly written for most of the time. Initially the writing wasn't horrible, it's more she was not the right choice, but over time the writing genuinely became awful, and unplayable, with a few exceptions (I think her pairings with Chris and Hal worked and got to take her in some new directions).
    • Coming into June and...   TRASH. Or as I like to say for moments like this...HUNNI, WHAT IS THIS?   Outside of seeing Traci come home...and then...Ashley...not a darn thing is going on. So they are clearing stalling now, aren't they? It really hit me during the Phyllis/Daniel scenes. It was feeling like a B&B scene where two characters have the same repetitive conversation. And I have not seen Phyllis/Daniel scenes in that light lately so yeeeeah NOPE.   I did like the touch of Traci arrived outside of the Abbott mansion door and taking a breath and looking around. Very aftereffects of Martin. And I liked her and Diane having their conversation about Martin. I wished JG had allowed Traci to stay in town to deal with her feelings about Martin so at least we are getting some follow-up on that.    And same with Ashley and her talk with Jack. I will take Eileen Davidson anyway I can get her. Dare I say...will she be around for the Dumas reveal?   Outside of...   Kyle, Claire, and Harrison in a park IS NOT a storyline.   Sharon having to use the phrases (and in text) with Nick dinner as friends IS NOT a storyline.   Giggly Heffa giggly-heffa-ing around town IS NOT a storyline.    With Damian MIA and my love of Eileen Davidson...I might just go on break until the Dumas reveal if this is how we are starting June.
    • Dragging this quote over from the Texas thread just because it shows a reference to Bay City as a fictional location at least as early as 1981. It doesn't quote Gail Kobe as saying it directly but the point she is making about the Houston setting of Texas does seem to take it for granted that Bay City is not real.
    • It's too bad they couldn't get access to the old music cues from the 80s and 90s, to run with the flashbacks or in the current scenes. That would have added a lot. Imagine if they had played the old Roman and Marlena theme.
