Sets "Problems" On All The Soaps

Some of us -- like me lol -- have complained about sets problems on YR, GH, B&B, and DAYS.

But what specific set on any soap makes you think "Huh?" I'd love to hear a list of sets that don't work for you, or make you wonder what the set designers were thinking.

Here's one:

On Y&R, we were all happy to see the return of the GCAC. The Athletic Club set is iconic. However, no elevator??? In a hotel frequented by an (almost entirely) older clientele? We never see anyone carrying their bags upstairs or downstairs, do we?

And then there's the main dining area. What's with all the living room furniture surrounding only 2-3 tables? How the hell does this restaurant stay open, and who wants to eat dinner while next to people sitting on a couch?

On Y&R, I hate that single hotel room over half the city lives in. Can't they at least move around the furniture or something? It reminds me of that single "blue room" DAYS used for years to stand in for practically anything (offices, hotel rooms, hospital room, etc.)

I absolutely hate how often GH brings back a set, but it is oriented differently. The Q doorway and staircase. Sonny’s penthouse door- isn’t This across the hall but now on the other side from Sam? The Brownstone now being Liz’s house, but no apartments anymore?

Also- the art in Sonny’s penthouse does not make any sense for him. At all.

I don’t think anyone has fallen as far as Y&R though- all that lush richness just decimated by eroding ratings and bad decisions bts.

As a long time viewer that occasionally pops into Y&R and GH, the problem that I have with the changes to the legacy sets is that they are disorienting.

For example, when the GH Quartermaines meet in the kitchen, is it still off of the main foyer? And where is that new white room in relation to the drawing room that we are used to seeing?  And why are they in the kitchen?  That was usually off limits to the family in the 1980s.

I appreciate the lighter tones of the Y&R Newman Ranch, but is this supposed to be the same room, with dining room attached stage right?  Because the fireplace is in the same place, but it seems to be missing that vestibule where people could conveniently overhear conversations.  Over the years, everyone from Diane to Sabrina were supposed to oversee the redecoration, so I'm just pleased to see that the work is finished.

It is like you lose the sense of the rest of the space

I think the Chancellor set is still basically the same old set, but it has been re-oriented toward the foyer, rather than the old orientation toward the fireplace.  It makes the set look smaller, because the living room is narrower with this orientation.   I believe this new orientation was done when Jill Phelps was executive producer, and Kathryn was still alive.  I dislike this view of the set, because it is too similar to the layout Abbott house.  When Kathryn's house was oriented the other way, the layout of the two houses appeared less similar.   I wish they would change it back.

I agree.  And if they are not going to show the front door and foyer of the Newman Ranch, then they need to cast a housekeeper or butler to escort guests to the living room.  It's strange when Victor and/or Nikki are sitting in the living room, and guests just walk right in.  It's as if they just walked in the front door, through the house, and into the living room without even knocking.  With all the security at the Newman Ranch, that is just not believable.  A servant to escort and announce the guests would make more sense and be more believable.

At the very least, one expects that a ranch would have a gate and long driveway, so guests should buzz the gate to announce their impending visit.  Then, Nikki could say, "Oh, Victoria is dropping by..."

It makes sense at the Abbot townhouse that guests can just walk up to the door because it seems more urban, but a ranch implies acres of land (also, a classic issue on Dallas, where people could show up on the Ewing Ranch without first checking in with a guard or at least an intercom).

The Chancellor set bears only a superficial similarity to the original. The dimensions are much smaller. The front door is now visible from the living room. The length and width much reduced. There is now a doorway to the left of the fireplace that was previously a wall. There were previously doors that lead into the living room that were always open, now just an entrance .

The Newman living room was a new set introduced several years back replacing the previous ranch entrance/stairway/living room. This new set is smaller.

I wouldn't call the GCAC set iconic... In fact it was not well-received (and it still looks dreadful to me) when it debuted, replacing Gina's. Still, it's lightyears better than anything the show provided us with in the last 15 years.

    • I'm trying to think whether AW had anything remotely resembling that once Steve was killed off and Alice left a widow. So many young love stories were wrapped up either by marrying and leaving town or marrying and killing off one party. Maybe they acted in the final year as if Vicky and Jake had been that couple all along, but they both had better other mates along the way and also Jake was actively hostile to Vicky at too many points without any subtext of caring about her.

️, so all the more time to watch/rewatch these past three scorching episodes. What were some of your favorite moments? @beyondthegatescbs
    • Beth Ehlers thanked Beth Chamberlain by name from the mic saying she was THE BEST person to be in a triangle with.  Generally speaking I loved Judi's Beth but then also strongly liked BethC's Beth but I did not like the whole Lorelei stage!!!
    • Yep, it seemed temporary, lasted 3-5 minutes, then BACK! Yea.  Thanks.
    • Oh but those "Pharleys" were very adamant that they stay together and be featured everyday (though I did like their websites and the recaps they gave each day.) I agree, they were interesting at first, but the longer it went on the more Harley became this sad sack jealous wife, the more Phillip became a dumb Josh type character torn between two women and the more Beth became a pathetic looser chasing her ex.   I think after Beth came back it would have been an interesting triangle of three "good" people trying to find a way, and I did like the "Who killed Carl" and how Harley and Beth had to work together there, but we all know Phillip would have dumped Harley to get together with Beth, Harley would have been hurt but dusted herself off and moved on, and eventually Beth and Phillip would implode. They didn't bring back one Reardon or Bauer for Mo's funeral...did anyone think they would waste money and energy on poor sad Nadine?
    • I hate to be that person, but Monday’s episode was a mess. The editing was an eyesore—felt like multiple scenes got chopped mid-way through. Anita’s singing was completely over the top. And while TT can sing, something about her performance just felt off—her voice was actually kind of grating   Leslie’s motivations make zero sense, unless we’re supposed to believe she just thrives on chaos. Her smirking while her daughter got locked out? That was straight-up cartoon villain territory. Once again, the Duprees came off like a full-on mob—especially the girls, who acted more like petty mean girls than anything else. And don’t get me started on Kat and Eva. Their dialogue was repetitive and totally unrealistic. “We have opposite fairy tales”? Seriously? Give me a break.(not that literally though, I want my episodes daily!!)
