Knuckle Down ~Ani Difranco

That's just my cowgirl alter-ego

Riding on her bar room bull

Dripping with the sweat of irony

As the cowboys whoop and drool

Shooting glances at the mirror

To see if her scar is showing

She is truly going nowhere tonight

Lecherous old lady wanna-be

Much too young and shy

Flailing her whole life

Just thinking she can teach herself to fly

Vehement romantic

Frantic for forever right now

But forever's going nowhere tonight

Sick of goading her self-loathing

She thinks, I think I'd better leave

'Course whiskey makes me smarter

And I'm happy as can be

But please excuse me darlin

It's not you

It's me

And there's a dusty old dust storm on mars, they say

So tonight you can't see it too clear

Still I stood in line to look through their telescope

Looked like a distant ship light

As seen from a foggy pier

And I know that I was warned

Still it was not what I hoped

Yes I know that I was warned

Still it was not what I hoped

I think I'm done gunnin to get closer

To some imagined bliss

I gotta knuckle down

And just be ok with this

I'm gonna knuckle down

Just be ok with this

'Course that star struck girl is already someone I miss

I swear some stuff you just see better from further away

And I think I communicate best now, the less I say

And I can't dance if the band can't play

And the vibe is going nowhere tonight

'Cuz somewhere between Hollywood and its pretty happiness

And an anguish so infinite it's anybody's guess

Is a place where people are all teachers

And this just one long class

And that ass will get you nowhere tonight

There's a dusty old dust storm on mars they say

So tonight you can't see it too clear

Still I stood in line to look through their telescope

Looked like a distant ship light

As seen from a foggy pier

And I know that I was warned

Still it was not what I hoped

Yeah I know that I was warned

Still it was not what I hoped

I think I'm done gunnin to get closer

To some imagined bliss

I gotta knuckle down

Just be ok with this

Gotta knuckle down

Just be ok with this

'Course that star struck girl

Is already someone I miss

Okay... "Strawberry Letter 23" by The Brothers Johnson is the jam. While looking for videos on YouTube, I found this cool "music video" that some guys made. It really has that 70s vibe to it, special effects, everything! They got that coolness of the 70s soul/psychedelic vibe down pat. What a trip! LOL!

...and then here's an awesome animated video that uses rotoscoping, tracing over live action, to capture this song. This video uses the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" by Shuggie Otis. It also does a excellent job of capturing the vibe of the song and times.

I swear there's something really inspirational about this song.

By the way, the title isn't a misnomer. Although the lyrics say "...a present from you, strawberry letter 22...," Shuggie Otis written this song in regards to his girlfriend who would write letters to him on strawberry scented paper. There's two theories for the title. A ) He's singing about letter 22 and the title is in hopes for her to send him letter 23, or B ) his song is in response to her letter 22, making his song letter 23.

I love finding out cool info/backstories on songs.

    • Which is what I'm sure the show wanted. Now Liz can be ready for Finn's triumphant return.
    • I am so damned embarrassed to be an American with that...thing...at the helm.
    • Jan was supposed to be a Dupree family housekeeper, which connected Ashley to Naomi... but I'm pretty sure they dropped that storyline.
    • Very sorry to hear of her passing. Aside from a few clips I've only ever "known" her through scripts and photos, but she along with the rest of the original cast helped make a show that changed daytime forever. We're still talking about one of her major stories on here to this very day.
    • That's a lovely photo. RIP.

    • I'll miss him too (still can't believe those were actual publicity photos - Joe Breen must have had a coronary), but he won't be gone forever.  Rauch did well at making people feel they were important (as long as they were willing to play along). That's probably why Erika Slezak loved him (he also gave her better story than he gave Zimmer). I think Kim has a certain amount of self-awareness but also needed to feel like she was the big star and desperately needed by the show. Wheeler was clearly incapable of expressing that.
    • Nicole has 2 assistants but no one else gets any staff (that we see). Are Dani and Hayley fixing meals and clearing blocked drains? I think they need to establish that they have some assistance. Vernon and Anita need to have a visible housekeeper. Give the Duprees some help!
    • . Her husband posted the following message: "The love of my life. The brightness in my life which is now so dimmer. In April I lost you and I miss you so much and I hope you are at peace. Lost Pam due to things beyond what was going on in her life. The original Peggy Brooks on The Young and the Restless and many more shows and commercials and then the creator of Chocolate Fortunes. So beautiful and a hell of a sense of humor. Great laugh, Great smile and Great compassion. You are my sidekick forever. Will miss you and all your sharp barbs. The angels are with you my beautiful angel. Fly safe and be happy. Much love and kisses forever."

    • I grew up in a neighborhood behind the gates and it really wasn't uncommon to have your house unlocked. In my neighborhood there was an armed gate before you enter the neighborhood and you have security patrolling 24/7. One thing that was common when I was in high school were for the kids whose parents were real estate agents to use their houses to throw house parties. It was easy because they were always unlocked.
