Taken aback to see Schneider in a dramatic role too.

I mean, he had some poignant moments on ODAAT - and I think he won an Emmy for one of 'em, too! - but the role he's playing in that TV movie is almost crossing over into Martin Sheen territory.

March 10-16 1986

Sophomore surprise Murder, She Wrote was pre-empted for If Tomorrow Comes.

Rookie breakout The Golden Girls was a repeat on March 15.

Here's what happened on the sophomore slaughterer, new hotness, and four soaps that week.

The Cosby Show - Close to Home (March 13): Cliff's friend discusses problems he has encountered with his teenaged daughter.

Dynasty - The Subpoenas (March 12): Bart's secret past yields triumph for Denver-Carrington, but Blake faces possible defeat in the courtroom battle with his brother, Ben. Dex rejects Amanda's affections. Alexis sabotages Caress' plans to publish a potentially damaging expose.

Miami Vice - Payback (March 14): Someone shadows Crockett while he and Tubbs work with a government agent to set up a reclusive drug smuggler.

Dallas - Just Deserts (March 14): Explosive events at the Martinique masquerade ball cause Angelica's disappearance, Grace's breakup with Jack, and Jack's disavowal of J.R.

Knots Landing - Distant Rumblings (March 13): Abby forces Olivia to tell the truth about the marijuana found in Michael's car. Val upsets Ben by visiting Gary in the hospital.

Falcon Crest - In Absentia (March 14): Angela vows to find Peter and her money. Richard learns that Jordan works for Terry and that Peter holds the mortgage on the track.

11 sitcoms 3 'dramas'1 newsmagazine.

Only 2 CBS sitcoms and only Mon as a sitcom block. Every 8-9 timeslot had strong sitcoms except Sun where CBS dominated with MSW. So it was hard for them to develop new comedies as all timeslots were taken. Fri 8-9 was probably their best chance.

The 9-10 slots available for sitcoms were Tues and Sun.

They tried Sun 9-10 with Designing Women/Nothing Is Easy, hoping the MSW lead in would help but it was a disaster as those sitcoms they were up against Feb Sweeps movies/mini series. And DW was a new show w/o much of a following at that point.

"Nothing is Easy" might be the best way to describe CBS's programming woes throughout the '80's, lol.

A promo for the short-lived 1983 show Masquerade which chooses not to show most of the actual cast members but does show guest stars Cybill Shephard and Richard Roundtree.

Rod Taylor, Parker Stevenson and Kirstie Allie were the stars. Guess they thought Cybill and Richard were more promotable?

Automan/Masquerade were the mid season replacements for flops Trauma Center/9 to 5/It's Not Easy.

Imagine getting a series picked up and then finding it was going up against CBS powerhouse Magnum/Simon & Simon. I'm sure as soon as the announcement was made, everyone started looking for their next gig.

Poor 9 to 5 had been done dirty. Regarding Masquerade, What is even wilder is not only was each episode very expensive to produce, but after seeing the weak ratings in the ABC attempted to move it to bolster ratings. The new timeslot? 9/8 on Friday nights.

Whoever was in charge of programming ABC for the 83/84 and 84/85 seasons needed their head examined…

How much of the issue with 9 to 5 was ratings and how much was the backstage clashes?

The backstage clashes were definitely a big factor for sure. BTS Drama + Cast Changes + Bad timeslot = Disaster

I was trying to think of a saving grace for each season for CBS.

The 85-86 had The Equalizer but that’s it.

The 86-87 season had Designing Women.

I was coming up almost empty handed with the 87-88 season til I remembered Jake & The Fatman…really lol?

The 88-89 season had Murphy Brown.

The 89-90 season was another hard one…Major Dad and then I guess a summer replacement series with Northern Exposure.

Add to your list

1985/86: CBS Sunday Movie

1987/88: 48 Hours. Beauty and the Beast, Tour of Duty, Wiseguy all maybes.

1988/89: Paradise (maybe)

1989/90: Rescue 911. Top Cops (maybe)

After flopping Thurs Masquerade was moved up against Dallas -then #1. Talk about out of the frying pan into the fire.

ABC's March programming moves pretty much involved shifting things around with the faint hope that something might attract attention ratings wise.

Automan moved to Mon, replacing That's Incredible. Masquerade to Fri replacing Blue Thunder and Lottery brought back to replace Masquerade. None of it worked.

As for 9 to 5, after a shaky start Thurs @9 it was moved to the better slot following Three's Company where it did better. But then ABC moved it back to Thurs where it quickly flopped. Considering there were backstage problems (can somebody elaborate?) it was too soon to move it, ABC had already been burned moving Too Close for Comfort to Thurs@9 where is struggled a few seasons before.

To be fair, the first episode of Masquerade on Fridays did get a 15.2 rating, which was the highest rating it had scored. Of course, Dallas was off and the following week it just bombed out. But they might've seen it as counter-programming - a show that's just fundamentally different than Dallas might get people who don't want to watch it tune in. Simon & Simon (in combo with Magnum PI) aired on CBS on Thursdays, which seemingly would target the same audience as Masquerade.

But the best option would've just to have put it on another day alltogether from the beginning, especially with the price tag attached.
