There was also a shift in dramas starting Fall 1985. Primetime soaps and action shows were out. Murder, She Wrote shocked the world. Miami Vice was the new hotness. Moonlighting showed growth and would take off the following season. L.A. Law was a year away.
1984/85 the primetime soaps pulled out all the stops to out-do each other and that culminated with the big cliffhangers of Royal Wedding shootout, Bobby's car accident, Val's babies. 1985/86 the primetime soaps tanked and Spring 1988 felt like the natural end point of the genre.
In real life 1985/86 was the season s--- got real with the AIDS crisis, Space Shuttle Challenger, Chernobyl. Escapism was out and shows that gave comfort and warmth were in because the world around us was changing so much.
