I could have sworn there was a thread for this beautiful, amazing show, but I guess not.

Anyway, the 2-hour Christmas Special debuts December 23! Lana W calls it the first episode of Season 2, and it's perfection:

And a message from Lana W

SEASON 2 arrives May 05, with 10 episodes. CANNOT WAIT.

If you haven't seen this & are thinking about it, DO IT. It pays off so beautifully as it builds throughout the season.

I think you'd like it.  What I found initially so refreshing was how it dealt with gay (and trans) issues so organically (well, except for one heavy handed scene in one of the early episodes).  Lana Wachowski has said how it was amazing working with Netflix because, despite their success, when working with movie studios they were always told not to address such issues (ironic since their breakthrough, before The Matrix, was the lesbian caper film Bound).  But I grew to just love the characters and also how well they mix the various styles they are using (telenovela, Chicago cop show, Bollywood, Scandinavian conspiracy thriller, etc).  I think you'd like it!

The Christmas special is out! Watching it today/tonight!

I was so excited with the announcement and hearing she liked AMC made me even more excited.

Hahaha thanks, right back at ya!

I don't want to damn it with praise, but I fell in love with the characters so much about halfway through. And that's only part of why it's so great. Really something you need in your life!

I love it for the same reasons. And not enough is said about how they film in real life locations for all stories. Adds so much to it.

Christmas Special here I come!

I saw a bit of it. That Lito and Hernando must be one of the hottest gay couples I can remember on a TV show. I also can't help being amused that the show responded to the hoo-ha from some about how the psychic cluster friend orgy was some type of bias against lesbians or gay men or trans people or whatever by having an even more blatant orgy this time around. It was strange seeing Martha Jones in sex scenes though, as it was the last time around. I kept waiting for her mother to appear, scowling as ever.

Oh, yes, I think the first 3-4 episodes or so are needed to fully get the scope and for things to start to pay off. The creators have even spoken about how it's a very non-traditional pilot in the sense that it's not designed to hook you & explain everything/set up everything right away. After that, it took off for me and everyone else I've spoken to. Keep going, boo!

At first, the show did not really "grab" me either, but friends kept telling me to stick with it, and it does pay off as the season progresses. I recently watched the Christmas special, and that was really great. I'm glad I made the effort with this series.

Between this and the Getdown I wonder if they're having money problems from all the more experimental fare - I was surprised as I thought the W sisters might have been able to keep this going (aren't they very rich?). Maybe Netflix is putting more money into their superhero shows and teen angst shows (like that suicide one so many teenagers love?)

This is why I never really got on the peak TV, cable and the networks are a thing of the past, etc. train, as all trends have to fade at some point.

This tells me One Day at a Time will probably just have a second season as well (they were renewed right?) so I'd better enjoy it while it airs.

    • I'm not even sure why Zoe would care, even if they know each other offcamera.  I can't see Jean going, but if she is - good riddance at this point.
    • I just found the commercial on YouTube, with several other GL'ers doing the same commercial - how fun!

She did the same for me once Ghost Reva arrived (the anxiety and paranoia) - which is when the storyline for Rick/Annie started, with their Chicago past and her alcoholism. But before all that, when she was new and tending to Josh's broken leg, she was just normal, sweet and very cute/flirty.
    • I have to admit Annie exhausted me somewhat before she went nuts. So much anxiety. She and Robert were OK I guess. Didn't ever stick out much one way or the other.
    • I meant to ask in the May thread, but hey...it's not like it won't come up...   ...has our opinions of Jessica changed at this point? I know we debated at one point if she was sincere in her feelings for Ty or if she was in on his bullying. Now that a little more time has passed, what do we think?
    • Which is why I said...and continue to say mind you...that the designer is still trying to figure out what works for which character...highlight my points with particular characters. And as I also agree with you, too many misses. She has not found a clear, firm rhythm for me. Yet.   I also agree that BTG does a much better job. But I'll give credit where it's due.
    • I watch many episodes from the Vault, a secret source here on SON, because the quality is much better than YouTube. But, it has commercials that I have to skip through, although even these commercials give me serious nostalgia vibes. All that said, there is a consistent 1996 commercial for Excedrin with Frank Beatty!  He talks right into the camera about his feelings, and it's like Brent Lawrence never left. I wonder if GL fans back in the day ever saw this and had feelings about it.
    • Dukes of Hazzard had a good run when it moved to 8pm but even when that was failing ABC and NBC couldn't come up with a hit show to dominate  that timeslot. NBC sent The A Team, Knight Rider and Riptide there for their final seasons and CBS did the same with Scarecrow & Mrs King. Otherwise it was a barrage of new shows that never worked.
    • Agree. Much more miss than hit. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I thought clothing was supposed to be flattering. A lot of the Y&R women are seen in the tight solid color dresses ,often with cutouts/one shoulder. Now that may be a fashion but to have all of them in interchangeable dresses... Do the characters have a particular color pallette/style that is unique to them? BTG does a better job in that department. Some recent Y&R looks. I actually like the dress but we see that style too often.   Nikki's new look is not to my liking.
    • The first show I found had Maeve dressed horribly, and I just shook my head and thought she must've been thrilled to be portraying someone much more sophisticated and rich. Vanessa's hats and gloves probably cost more than her AW character's entire wardrobe.
    • It is the least aware sobriety memoir I've ever read. No spoilers, but where was the editor to ask what she learned from all the stories in her life?
