Bryan Fuller steps back from Discovery. He's still writing the first two episodes, has plotted the whole first season and the network claims he will remain involved, but two of his lieutenants and proteges will apparently take over the showrunning. According to various different sources, the 'creative differences' with CBS involved scheduling (he already insisted they push the show to May to give it more time to be cast and polished) and budget.

I think it's a huge mistake, as Fuller has said for years he would drop everything else to come back and do Trek and I think he very much wants to. I'd love to believe he'll pull a David Lynch and return to the show, but as they've already lined up a hack (Akiva Goldsman) to become part of the mix I doubt it. Sad. This was a dream for many a Trekkie, myself included.

I've been saying from the beginning that this is just a disaster. It's been a disaster since day one. This is a money grab for CBS and that's it. They completely forgot about Star Trek's 50th anniversary even with a movie coming out. I know many were excited about Fuller's involvement, but the second I found out he wanted to do yet another prequel I lost interest. Then I feel they must've had creative differences since they delayed filming.

Now we have to deal with a new producer and writer, clearly they're having casting trouble and nobody has a clue what's going on. Lost In Space comes out in 2018 and we already have a full (and very exciting) cast. I'm to the point where I don't even believe this show will meet the May deadline. We will see, but I have absolutely no excitement until I see the product.

I think it's a money grab for CBS, yeah. But I don't think it ever was for Bryan Fuller, and that's why he quit the project. Going back to Trek after 15 years was his dream project. CBS originally wanted this show cranked out by next month, and he fought them on that.

The characters created, the season-long storyline and I suspect casting thus far (Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones) are all his, though, as are the first two scripts which he wrote and the creative team he left in place BTS. So I am hopeful about that and as a Trek fan I intend to watch it (I also love the timeframe it's using, the era of "The Cage"), but I am deeply discouraged by how Fuller was treated and I do hope they go back to him. It wouldn't surprise me, given they actively attempted to mislead the press about his continuing involvement for fear of backlash.

I'm just thrilled, because to the best of my knowledge the role she is taking on - "Number One" - is conceived of as the central lead of the show. That is a huge deal both for Star Trek and for her, and for television. Trek is a massive franchise.

Before departing to focus on his other show Bryan Fuller intended for the role to be cast with a woman of color. A friend of mine told me most of the casting thus far is all his, and I hope she was as well. I'm just so happy for her.

It's pretty cool they cast her, but I wish I didn't know because it will make her inevitable death on TWD expected.  This will probably be a better role considering her TWD role is pretty marginal.  If it is truly to be set in the era of The Cage then I hope they use that esthetic with the bright costumes and goofy phasers and stuff.   They probably won't but it would be cool if they did.    I just wish this show wasn't going to be on some out of left field streaming service because I don't feel like paying per month to watch just one show.

    • Ah okay, thats what I thought. I was hoping I missed the announcement somewhere. Thanks for the clarification.
    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.
