LeVar Burton touches briefly on Empire while discussing '70s TV and Roots:

You talked about the importance of viewers seeing themselves on TV. I don’t want to draw too exact a link with Roots, but this year we also saw a show that resonated …

You’re going to link it to Empire?

I am, just a bit! The ratings among African-American audiences were bigger than some Super Bowls. Do you think it connected in a similar way as Roots?

Absolutely. It is [about] this slice of American life — hip-hop culture — which is the lingua franca of the planet. And it is told through the eyes of black people. You cannot underestimate the power of seeing oneself, feeling oneself represented in the popular culture.

Staff writer/producer and novelist Attica Locke talks about her work on the show (starting around 20 mins in). Says their main feedback has been "slow the [!@#$%^&*] down". Also mentions FOX preemptively cut their Season 1 episode order by one early on due to scheduling, pre-success. (This interview was conducted before the 18-episode announcement.)

Taraji is hospitalized with apparent exhaustion. TMZ claims food poisoning.

Here she is with Terrence Howard at Monte Carlo. As always, they are hilarious together. Really worth a watch.

IA! They fit 2 whole seasons worth of material into half a season. Too much got glossed over and as good as the show was, it would have been strengthened had they slowed it down

Per Lee Daniels' twitter, Season 2 began shooting today.

There's also rumblings on social media that the show is casting for a young Lucious in flashbacks, and that Chris Rock's character is

a prison inmate.
