Characters TPTB Tried/Try to Make Work, But they just DON'T (Past & Present)

Even Shawn Christian said most fans hate Daniel.

Damn. When even the actor admits it....

From GUIDING LIGHT: Richard [!@#$%^&*] Winslow and Jeffrey [!@#$%^&*] O'Neill. As long as I live, I'll never forgive the horny bitches who sent flowers to John Conboy, begging him to bring Bradley Cole back.

They really do not tho. Days gets a huge amount of positive feedback to him from in studio mail and email. social networking is mixed. If they hated him half as much as people claim, he would be gone or at least minimized on the show. Same with Rafe/Sami/EJ it seems likle everyone hates it, but the feedback they get doesnt match that at all. And i am not talking about Q scores or focus groups either.

With whom? A tanning bed and a bottle of SPF-30?

Kate was liked.

Both jennifer and chloe were hugely popular. Hell SC makes a shitload of money off fan events just based on each of those pairings alone, esp Chloe. Jen was more mixed and became not as popular later on once Jack was back though.

Okay. So America actually loves Sami/EJ/Rafe and Daniel. That's fine. Now, how about writing these characters a decent story for once, or at least figuring out better ways to make them work on the canvas?

(Not an attack at you, by the way, JP, whom I adore. I'm just saying.)

Oh, dont worry - i could not agree more!

At this point i hope that EJ looses it and kills Rafe and Sami ends up killing EJ and needs to go to the nuthouse for a few months!

I always get the feeling his only truly popular relationship was with Chloe (who had two or three popular pairings of her own). The others seem to go from apathy to disgust and the stories always got truncated.

jen and dan def was popular until jack returned and then it was mixed and then it was hated by the time they treated jack so horrid. Jack always ruins Jen tho. They are at their best away from eachother. I was sad they never did anything with Billie and Jack this last go around.

I wasn't, because I really, really, really want Billie to have a love interest who isn't a refugee from a previous supercouple. Even if a triangle involving her, Kate and Mike Horton makes me absolutely weak in the knees.

DEAD! omg. Such a perfect expression.

Billie will never get her own man. She was great with Bo, and she was better with Steve than Kayla was this last go from the both of them. He never should have gotten his memories back right away. He and Billie should have gotten married, maybe adopted a kid - then he gets them back and is caught between two lives. Further complicated by Kayla already have moved on, but she doesnt love her new man as much as she loves steve.

Since Patch (sorry, but he'll always be "Patch" to me) was absent for so long, I wouldn't have minded if he had returned to Salem as patriarch of a new family that included a wife, a woman he'd met in the years immediately following his "death"; a stepson; and maybe a child of their own. Of course, being back in Salem gradually brings all his long-forgotten memories to the surface. However, between his being away often (he works these days as a truck driver) and all those frustrating near-misses with people who knew him, he can't quite put together why his and his family's new home seems so damn familiar to him...

...until he finally comes face-to-face with back-in-town Kayla...

...who has become good friends with his other wife...

...and whose daughter, Stephanie, is dating his stepson.

Except I'm not so sure I could buy Shawn Christian as Dr. Mike Horton. I mean, I'd come closer to buying Michael Park (ex-Jack, AS THE WORLD TURNS) or even SC's successor as ATWT's Mike, Mike Collier.

I'm SO old in terms of Days viewing that the Dr. Mike Horton I really remember and liked was played by the charisma- and camera-friendly Michael T Weiss -- waaaaaaaay back in the day. Needless to see, his whitewashed blonde successor and the current Whispery McHairychest do not make the grade acting- or other-wise.

I have a question: are we discussing characters who never ever fit into the show no matter how hard TPTB forced them upon us OR characters who became toxic ulcers who took over the show? Because in the latter, I would definitely put Sonny-Snaggletoofs-JayBorg for GH, but it wasn't always that way.

Oh yeah, Yvonne Zima on Y&R and the Ford twinks on OLTL! How on earth could I forget those monstrosities?

One final candidate: Amber on B&B. They kept trying to foist Squeaky on us for years when it was clear that Marissa Tait who played her cousin Becky was getting more popular. So they gave Becky an incurable disease and killed her off, and Amber was unloaded on a series of chemistry-free pairings and even a SL featuring her porn twin, April.

The thing with Adrienne Frantz is that she has some natural charm and I forget that I hate Amber when she first shows up on B&B or Y&R. Then, little by little, the SLs start sucking and I recall that this character sucks as well. They suck because Amber does something stupid and/or illegal. Amber sucks because the HW then backtracks and tries to make Amber all innocent victim-y. In the end, I just want her gone -- the exception being that SL where she told Bill she was preggers with Liam's baby, and Bill imagined throwing her off a cliff.

It's funny you say that, because I was going to list Amber. I don't think she dragged B&B down, as I thought the show was kind of a mess in the few years before her arrival, but I think she's a character who should have stayed only for a few years. I don't think any story she had after the baby stealing ended really served a purpose. Then when she was back on B&B they clearly had no idea what to do with her, and when they finally had an idea, they wrote her out.

Any Genie Francis character since about 1990.

Now that I agree with. If you have to keep changing a character's personality every month than they don't fit in.
