Y&R: MAB OUT! Hamner OUT! JFP IN! Griffith IN! Sheffer UNKNOWN!

IIRC, JFP did not write out any black family at OLTL. The Gannons remained. She just didn't do much with them, and she sent Rachel to prison within six months of her arrival. I believe she also got rid of Jacara, R.J.'s love interest. She played around with Rachel two years later but didn't put her on contract, and soon she and her new love interest disappeared. Hank was a back burner character by then and R.J. had the pairing with Tea and little else (they did have love scenes, I believe) - though he did remain active.

It wasn't until Brian Frons that the Gannons were phased out. Upon his arrival Nathan Purdee split, Sherri Saum was killed off, and TDS was slowly phased out until finally disappearing from Llanview in 2008, I believe, and then making only a few guest appearances in the last couple years. RC brought Rachel back but she was iced in the purge of minorities/outcasts in early 2010.

As I said before, I think JFP follows a writer's lead only if she respects them. If the writer uses AA characters and she likes the writer she may go with it. Otherwise, [!@#$%^&*] 'em. She has no particular interest on her own, IMO, but no particular prejudice either. Just indifference.

I don't recall Rachel ever being used well. RC brought her back to prop her brother. According to this interview RJ never had a hot love scene.

Wasn't OLTL said to be the soap Frons did the least amount of micromanging on? Keri went crazy, Vange was rendered comatose after almost being killed by a racist, Layla was backburned until the actress left. Antonio got polarizing writing until Kamar left.

Back on track what big stories was Sally behind her last stint on Y&R?

backburning is just as bad as being written out in some instances. why get rid of RJ's love interest, was she a flop with fans, the actress awful or something? I don't think she's as diverse as some like to claim

At least she backburned them instead of having racists try to kill them! Every recent EP in daytime has backburned black and hispanics(unless they are being played by non hispanics) except Cazotte

Sally's big claim to fame during her 2005-2006 consultant/breakdown stint was having Sheila poison Lauren through A F.UCKING NECKLACE.

Which was a story beat I liked, it wasn't done gothic enough for my liking, but I preferred it to anything that's come since.

She was mostly involved in Sheila's crap return story, as mentioned, particularly responsible for Sheila poisoning Lauren through a damn necklace...

She takes credit for Nick/Phyllis, but that's not true, as Jack Smith has said multiple times that was his idea and I tend to believe him more.

Sally told FrenchFan in that now infamous interview that was she was never in contention (to her knowledge) to take over the show. Maybe she was just saving face because she wasn't chosen?

Same. Daytime never will "get it right," so why bother anymore?

The same reason they keep their quota of token minorities on canvas.

Sally was a script writer back in the hayday of Y&R correct?? Or was she a breakdown writer...I cant recall.

I think Sally used to claim she had big input in writing for Ashley.

(that Ashley's character and SSM's career both petered out at the same time is kind of ironic)

Gloria and Jeffrey are such a non-entity, I don't even know why they're still on the show.

Barbara Bloom, their biggest cheerleader, isn't in the mix anymore...

The last thing Y&R needs right now is ott camp.

Y&R had a ton of OTT camp the last time it reinvented itself in such a major way (the early '80s, with psycho Eve, Katherine gaslighting Suzanne, Victor keeping Michael prisoner), but they seemed to treat this very seriously. Now soaps don't know how to do camp - it's always done as a joke, a lewd wink. And the actors can't pull it off. If Michelle Stafford played camp today she'd be like Joan Crawford circa Trog.

As for OLTL, there wasn't a black family written out, but Claire Labine had tried to build up a black presence, with increased conflict between Hank and RJ, RJ's girlfriend Jacara (who had her own club, complete with a transgender bartender/mixologist) fought with Hank's girlfriend Carlotta. Hank and Carlotta had a few scorching love scenes, which neither had had before, IIRC. Rachel didn't have a lot to do, and was miscast, but was allowed to date, having a brief story with Henry Simmons.

All that was shut down very abruptly, and I felt like the way Rachel was treated was dehumanizing. Although at least they did bring her back, with the proper actress, for some guest shots.

One of many reasons why I hated his HW time at Y&R, And they are still together stinking up the place with Josh Morrrow crowing everytime he isnt with her...cough...Maura West..cough....

Maura West should have never been playing Diane in the first place. From the moment she was cast, I knew they had no plans for her.

Nick/Phyllis is a disastrous relationship that has eaten away at the core of this show for years. I hope Jill hates them and totally decimates them they way she did to Nora and Bo at OLTL.

I've seen that interview but it's not entirely accurate. IIRC, in the later years, he had love scenes with Florencia, one with Renee Goldsberry, and (ugh) Barbara Niven. Unfortunately these scenes were few and far between.

I'm not defending JFP, who I hate - I think she is no advocate for minorities. But unlike some HWs and EPs, she is not openly disdainful. She did humiliate Rachel and write her out when the unfortunate Sandra Grant was in the role, but she later brought back Ellen Bethea.

Oh, he did plenty over the years.

It is odd since neither of them are on contract, you'd think MAB & Co would have gotten some sense and written them off to save some cash.

Y&R writes about 2-2.5 months in advance if we use Chris Whitesell's departure as a reference. Whitesell was hired at DAYS in early April and his last on air breakdown at Y&R was June 11.

She takes credit for Nick/Phyllis, but that's not true, as Jack Smith has said multiple times that was his idea and I tend to believe him more.

She sure does. Here's what she said in FrenchFan's interview:

SSM: Actually, I was hired well before Lynn. I was brought back as story consultant to help Jack and Kay, really hired by Sony and the Bells. It wasn't until 6 months later that Lynn arrived. It was great for me to work with Jack, Kay and the other writers again. With Jack and Kay, it was like I'd never left. The show was doing great, we had just married Lauren and Michael, I created the Nick/Phyllis love story and the ratings were great but then Lynn came in and we all knew she was there to take over for Jack. She and I were never competing for the HW job because she was the choice of the network person, Barbara Bloom. She wanted Lynn in the job and she wanted Jack out. Sony and the Bells went along with it and Lynn got the job. She never wrote a bible or any long term document. I had done one before I arrived and there were several stories in there that we should've done, especially one for Brad (and no, I don't mean the ridiculous Nazi storyline). My story involved his former wife, Lisa who had locked him in the cage many years ago. We never used it because when Lynn took over, her time was spent getting rid of anyone who knew the show. She was a total disaster and the worst experience I've ever had as a writer.
