Is anyone else following this novela? Telemundo airs it nightly with English language subtitles. I’ve seen clips online of the origin soap, ‘Chemical or Physical,’ so I was interested in seeing how this adaption turned out.

After watching soaps fail to produce plot over the past decade or so, it was nice to see a show know how to engage the audience with an actual storyline rather than random plot points strung together. Because it’s a youth soap, there doesn’t seem to be a single storyline that dominates most of the plot. I’m still not convinced Mauricio / Miranda are the couple we are suppose to be rooting for, which is rather impressive. On the otherhand, maybe I’m just not as up-to-date on the inner workings of a novella. I’m still hoping that J.P. / Miranda have a shot at an actual romance.

I like how I’m emotionally involved in the story. I won’t to see what happens when Sebastian learns the truth about Rodrigo’s suicide. I want to see novice educator Patty gain control of her classroom and deal with Gonzalo and Leo’s antics. I want to know what J.P.’s secret is and who is stalking him. I do miss the absence of a mother figure and a traditional villainess (though the red headed teacher may fill that void if she ever does anything but smirk and snark).

I also like how complicated everything is. Mauricio saved Miranda from being raped by Oliver only for Mauricio to lie about his age and bed Miranda. The first day of school rolls around and Miranda learns Mauricio is a student in her senior literature course. Miranda realizes Oliver, another one of her students, is the attempted rapist, but when Miranda / Mauricio threaten to press charges Oliver threatens to reveal the truth about Miranda / Mauricio. To an extent, I feel sorry for Miranda; Mauricio lied and misled her. If Miranda knew the truth, I don’t think she would have slept with him. On the otherhand, maybe she shouldn’t have jumped into bed with him. The more I think about the situation the more I realize I would feel differently if Mauricio was older. Also, I’m not completely sure that Miranda / Mauricio’s physical relationship wouldn’t have developed into an emotional one due to their shared interests.

The other major story revolves around the death of Rodrigo Aragon, a student at the school where Miranda teaches and Mauricio is a student. Rodrigo attends a party with his pal Oswaldo and ends up doing drugs with Oswaldo and Gonzalo, a hood who has been supplying drugs. Anyway, the three boys end up taking pills and blacking out the next few hours. As the novela opens, Oswaldo and Rodrigo are in a car fighting and Oswaldo smacks Rodrigo causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Rodrigo flees and Oswaldo later dies. A guilt ridden Rodrigo ends up mixing drugs and alcohol and sits on the railing of his mother’s high rise apartment. As Sebastian, his older brother, watches in horror, Rodrigo throws himself off the balcony several stories to his death. In the ensuing episodes, Sebastian has been determined to learn what drove Rodrigo to do what he did.

Besides the car accident, Rodrigo, Oswaldo, and Gonzalo did something the night of the accident that Gonzalo cannot remember. He knows the truth is on Rodrigo’s phone and convinces Leo, a preppy hacker, to conceal the truth from Sebastian. The insinuation is Oswaldo, Gonzalo, and Rodrigo had a drug induced threesome which led to the events of the car accident. While I’m not thrilled with the whole gay / suicide angle, the show balances it out with Mauricio’s mother’s acceptance of Mauricio when he says ‘law and the society will not accept my love.’ Mauricio’s mother informs him it is fine if he is gay unaware he pines for his teacher who is a decade older than him.

Hopefully, some others are watching.

Do you watch it without the subtitles? I'm really hoping there's a way to fix that problem because I'd really get into it more if I knew everything they were saying. LOL. That kinda stuff just drives me crazy. I need to learn Spanish!

I dont use the subtitles..I understand spanish...hehe..and speak it. I am about to see last night's episode.

Can't say I really know what's really all going on thought yet, LOL. Apparently, Telemundo provides English subtitles on the "CC3" closed caption setting, but when I set it to that I don't see anything. I tried the "CC2" setting though & they have English subtitles, but they go SO freaking fast & sometimes the wording is all jumbled sad.png Meanwhile, the "CC1" setting (which is in Spanish) goes by swiftly...LOL.

One of the first times I watched, the show's captions were all messed up, but they settled. I watch it on CC3, and the captions are clear.

I was happy Sebastian / Ale didn't kiss. Sebastian's philosphy about kissing Ale was very modern. Also it would have been unfair to Ale because he does really care about Sebastian. The stuff with itgetsbetter.org was a bit PSAy, but I like that it was included. The show broaches so many subjects, but I wish they approached them in a less preachy manner.

The picture arc is rather weird. I like how they have driven Miranda / Mauricio apart, but I wish they would build up J.P./Daniel and Miranda in the process. J.P.'s backstory is so soapy and his former father-in-law is much different than I imagined. Less cartoony and more human.

I guess I feel a little bad Max gets beat by his father, but he is such a sh%^% I feel awful for think it is a little bit deserved.

Watched the latest episode. I guess it's not too bad with the subtitles not fully working. The show is still more interesting than the U.S. soaps I watch. LMAO

I'm giving this format another shot. I loved the English language novelas on MyNetworkTV. I tried to watch 'Sin Limites,' which was a Spanish version of 'Watch Over Me.' Univision/Televisa novelas just don't appeal to me.

I like Cassius a lot - what did those two bullies exactly make him do? Those guys are hilarious with their little hand shake laugh.png "We rock!"

Gonzalo and Max made Cassius report Ana, the history teacher, for the comment she made in class about the Civil War. Ana said if it wasn't for Lincoln, there wouldn't be a black student in the class. The students harped on the comment. Cassius went to Teresa, the director of the school. Teresa has launched an investigation.

It is so funny how they have the theme song play more than once during the episode, they even play it during montages laugh.png I'd normally find that annoying but I actually don't mind that motif with this show.

I do like the song. In the 1980s, 'Guiding Light' used variations of the theme song, 'My Guiding Light,' throughout various episodes.

Max and Gonzalo shoving Cassius in that washing machine laugh.png That was so cruel but I was still laughing.

Really, when you get suspended at Cervantes Academy, all your parents get is an email about it? Thought that was pretty unrealistic. And Max & Gonzalo's parent's didn't even know what they did. LOL. The scenes with Gonzalo and his parents were very hammy, the guy playing his dad was especially bad. The best acting in those scenes was from the girl playing the little sister laugh.png

I do feel bad for Max, knowing what he has to go through at home w/his dad threatening to beat him. I liked the developments at the end with his dad talking to him about how he's the next heir to the family business.

The Mauricio/Ms. Miranda/JP drama was good. Mauricio and Ms. Miranda are cute & it feels like they will be together in the end, but I actually like her & JP together more. She doesn't seem that into him though.

Yup...last night's show was rather slow.

I love the pace of the show!

Thanks for that info. Hopefully the captions straighten out on my end as well...

ITA with you about the itgetsbetter.org stuff.

I'm new to the telenovela format and I'm regretting not getting into it sooner.

I already love the song. It's amazing! laugh.png

La Casa del al lado ended on Monday with a 8.9 rating for its last show.

Relaciones Peligroasas started ok on Tuesday for it's first episode but have dropped every since. It's averaging a 4 in the ratings...not very good considering how well La Casa del al lado and other soaps in that timeslot did. I think the reason people are turning out is because of all the racey stories going on. I guess people aren't ready for them whether it's on daytime or primetime.

So Diego sure talks about Alejandro a lot for a guy that doesn't like him. In fact his line about Sebastian on a date with "Alejandra", I almost detected a bit of jealousy. Lol

Was hard watching Diego get his ass kicked even though he's been kind of an a hole.

And Alejandro finding Diego and taking him to the hospital, and so it begins...

I see the shower scenes continued on Wednesday's episode. I saw Diego giving Alex a look...it wasnt of hate but of ummm..he looks good look....lol

I absolutely love how a naked picture of Ms. Miranda drives almost all the stories on this show.

LOL at Cassius Photoshopping pictures of all the teachers/staff. That was a clever way to get Ms. Miranda out of hot water. It was so funny watching everyones reactions. The principal laugh.png

Mauricio beat Diego's ASS! That was so brutal, I thought he was dead when Mauricio slammed him on that tree! What's the history between Diego and Alex? I think I wasn't watching during their episodes yet.

The guy playing Mauricio is actually a really good actor!

No history...of course they go to the same school and he teases Alex for being gay and loving Sebastian. He calls him Alejandra.....everytime he sees him. I remember Alex staring at Sebastian naked...lol...too funny and Diego caught him looking...lol
