Cancelled Soaps and the Witness Protection Program

I thought it could have been an interesting idea with any of the cancelled soaps had they used the WPP to springboard an existng character onto another soap. The way it would be set up is if said character was killed off on soap A months before the finale. However on the final episode, we learn the character is alive and given instructions and a new identiy as they are about to enter the witness protection program. Next time we see the character they are on soap B under a new name, persona and are like a new character on the show but we the audience know its all a lie. It would be interesting to see the struggles that go along with trying to maintain a lie that big as well as forming new relationships and connections under a false identity, knowing one cant reconnect with their old loved ones out of fear of bringing harm to them.

The timing is perfect for something like this to have been done with TSJ's Victor from OLTL and I think it could have been a cool scenario. I rememebr there were rumors of possibly NBC/CBS taking on ABC/CBS but that was pretty implausible. What if they just bought the rights to one character and had something like this done instead? What of any of the other past soaps? Anyone think this could have worked and been an interesting concept? Any characters/actors you think this would have been interesting with?

This is a great idea and could work in other ways too: witness protection or even characters on the run... with the prison break coming up there are lots of opportunities for established characters to flee to another town/soap. It could work for characters like Matthew, Jack, or Todd (running from the law); Tess (tho I'm not sure I'd wish Bess on any other soap); or almost any character in something like Viki's first trip to Paris, TX (just to get away). A character in hiding/on the run makes the most sense tho & has the most potential for good drama

It would have to make sense for the character and, more importantly, for the soap where the character lands.

Yeah, I think this is a cool idea. I got a similar vibe when Alex Devane and Ian Thornhart came on the scene, it's like we all knew there was a connection there but it wasn't immediately addressed on the show. OLTL kind of did something similar with Lee Halpern

I wouldn't mind even AMC characters being on there. If they save Robin and keep Anna, I would like to see David Hayward on the show trying to win her back. Though I want to forget the orphious project completely if they DO kill Robin then Anna will have to rely on David for that. But not killing off her HIV either.

theres actual rumors of John McBain making his way to GH

I think the hospital staff are an obvious route. I could easily see someone with no ties like Griffin or Cara making a move over to Port Charles working on a case. Frankie as well either seperated or with a recast Randi. Had Zach not been resurrected, he'd have been a good candidate for the witness protection route (but then again TK most likely wouldnt join a west coast soap)

haha, speak of the devil! With the news that OLTL characters are going to GH, I think a remix of this will happen with Todd going to GH under a new identity as he goes on the run for murder. For all we know Victor is being kept somewhere over in Port Charles. Im definetly excited to see how this plays out

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.

    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
