DE did an epilepsy ep too, an epileptic mime at that. Arnold and Sam come home slapping their knees about the seizure she had whilst street performing and Pearl the maid scolds them, "Because *I* have epilepsy too!"

BTW, what a great forgotten thread.

I wouldn't really call it bizarre or tasteless, but I was always oddly depressed by the episode where the overweight girl guest-starred, constantly making jokes about how grotesque she was. Punky and Henry encouraged her to accept herself and admit that she was only encouraging fat jokes because she hated herself.

The coda for the episode had her coming back and showing how much weight she'd lost.

I felt like they were somehow afraid of sending a message that someone overweight needs to accept themselves, because they were afraid of sending a message that it's not that easy to lose weight. So they got the happy ending, with the weight loss. I thought it send out a dubious mixed message, somewhat harmful. Even if you do like yourself, that doesn't mean you suddenly lose weight.

I should also mention that Good Times episode with the cousin who was a closet drunk because her parents had encouraged her to drink during the holidays. Never really got that one.

The episode is hilarious, but they were apparently trying to teach us something. I sometimes wonder if the writers just wanted to have a good laugh and passed that under the guise of social issues. That's probably the only social issues episode of Good Times that I didn't really get. Most of the others that I can remember worked (I guess the most frightening was when James went beserk).

Yeah, GT always brought it when it came to social issues. I fully intend to show "Florida Flips" to my students when we get to the feminist movement. The Naomi ep was definitely off-key, though, and it seemed like a lot was crammed into an episode.

Speaking of which, the episode where Keith gets violent is even more WTF for me than James's violent outbursts.

Believe it or not, David Dukes' character's assault on Edith Bunker (in "Edith's 50th Birthday") was originally developed as an idea for "One Day at a Time"'s Ann Romano. I've no idea why Norman Lear switched the story over to AITF.

Thanks to TVLand and WEtv, I'm able to watch the entire, nine-year run of "Roseanne"; and let me just say, they certainly were no stranger to bizarre, outlandish and tasteless episodes. (And that's not even including the abysmal, it-was-all-a-big-dream final season.) Off the top of my head: Roseanne's fantasy about having some peace-and-quiet alone in the bathtub that turns into a murder trial; "Sherwood Schwarz: A Loving Tribute," where she imagined all the regular cast members as castaways from "Gilligan's Island"; the black-and-white "That's Our Rosie!" episode; the one where Roseanne plays the Most Obnoxious Gay Wedding Ever for Leon and his fiancee; the severely disjointed Halloween show where Roseanne gave birth to her youngest child, Jerry; and the one where Roseanne and Jackie attempt to sabotage a new restaurant opening across the street from the Lanford Lunch Box. (Roseanne getting stuck inside an oven vent? That never would have happened under showrunner Bob Myer's watch.)

I remember cringing at a lot of that. Donald Bogle wrote about the horrible treatment of Thelma and for some reason it reminds of that episode, although she did stand up for herself and had some good material. I think, beyond some of the acting issues with Keith, it just showed how much had changed - if you were going to have Thelma get slapped, you have to have more than just Michael and JJ around to be horrified. At first I wasn't quite sure JJ even noticed.

I always "Pffft!" and roll my eyes/shake my head when Naomi's dad (who would more famously return as Balderman Davis) says, "I thought she was on drugs...". Uhh, okayyy, and yet...? We always used to joke over at IMDb about how GT characters would hilariously rattle off statistics in pure PSA fashion.

Naomi was like the Lynn Milgrim to Henrietta's (Debbie Allen) Claire Bloom.

Don't forget Debbie Reynolds as Dan's now comic relief psycho mother, completely ruining a touching story from the first season.

I know she did the gay wedding episode as a screw you to ABC for their objections to the lesbian story with Sandra Bernhard and Mariel Hemingway. But spending most of your show in a grudge match with your network is not exactly entertaining. I try to forget the last 3-4 years of that show existed.

Which is why I, like yourself, tend to prefer the seasons of "Roseanne" where people other than Roseanne herself were in charge. (That would include seasons 1 through 5.) Even without Tom Arnold, I felt as if her tastes in comedy ran often to the tasteless and objectionable.

Best part: when Willona was caught in a tug-of-war between James and Michael (or was it James and J.J.) as they were sitting down at the table to eat. I think it was all Ja'Net DuBois could do to keep her wig on (and keep it straight).

    • Thank you for the info about SFT related to EON. I thought about adding SFT to my watch list, but I don't know if it's the kind of soap for me. I know very little about it except for a few of the actors and that it was on two different networks. I also know based on this board or somewhere else that the two Lizas both died young from cancer. Warms my heart to see so many EON people on SFT because they are such good performers and I wish they had been moved to other shows. Perhaps, they were and I'm just not aware of it.
    • There was a few times when Silk Press Sheila came into her apartment after going grocery shopping.. she could have been unloading her items as she talked to Eva or Ted and saw a few of the products on the counter that are P & G products.
    • I enjoyed today's show. I liked seeing Mona again and her confronting both Eva and Leslie. I did feel for Eva, especially at the end of their confrontation, when Mona said "Good", when Eva mentioning losing everybody she cared about. Though, I can understand Mona's anger and Leslie deserved every bit of her ire. Both Leslie/Eva betrayed her especially Leslie. Mona put her both her professional and personal relationships with the Duprees on the line and what Leslie/Eva did put her in an awkward position. Speaking of Leslie she continues to act trifling and caring only about herself and her needs. At this point, it only seems like she cares about herself and wanting Ted for herself. I'm not even sure how if her feelings for Mona were even sincere, though she called out about people turning against her after Mona left. I have yet to see Leslie really display that she sincerely cares about anyone, and I do think that needs to change at some point. I enjoyed Nicole and her scenes today with Leslie/her children. I also like that Martin took a more sensible approach regarding how the family should handle Eva. He did straight up acknowledge she was his sister, and it seemed like he was opened to up to accepting her. I think he will be among the first in the family to soften towards/accept her. And in spite of the way she was introduced into their lives, he will end up being happy to have two little sisters. I wonder again about Kat/Eva being twins/Eva being Nicole, when Martin/Kat brought up them being the same age and Kat even used the word "twins" in disbelief, when Martin suggested they shared a connection from the beginning.
    • LOL! They did show a Pantene and Dawn commercial today. Image them incorporating those into the show.
    • He joined Julian in Bermuda when he getting a divorce from Ivy. And, was the one who tricked Theresa and Julian in to believing that they had gotten married there. That would be nice.  That was such a good book, and it was too bad that the show retconned it so much. I still have my copy somewhere.
    • Instead of Febreze, Eva pulled a few tissues of Puffs and cried into them. Hayley comes in with a pack of Always and is like "Well, Bill turns out I'm not pregnant." Andre and Derek sharing a bottle of Pepto after eating Ashley's cooking. Vernon and Anita drinking up their Metamucil.
    •   I liked the actress who played Tina. She was not the typical soap hire. I hadn't thought of her in many years until I saw a Spauldingfield video of her. It makes sense if they were planning to make her Frank's daughter as she was tied to the Coopers and nothing else was done with her beyond singing and the relationship with Marcus that Rauch never cared about. David was hurt by Monti Sharp leaving the role. I don't blame Monti for leaving, as he was getting less and less to do, but Russell Curry was a very generic actor was too old for the part. Yes, black don't crack, but he was nearly 40. When David returns at the end of the decade they cast an actor who was a little too young, which just shows how little interest the show had in the character or black characters in general (and random recasting would return with the Boudreauxs). Marcus is a character who got a lot of buzz early on and then the show lost interest (again).  Anyway, if you stay watching, be warned that the Hart/Dinah/Roger stuff gets worse and worse. Luckily you don't have the same lengthy ties to the show so it may be OK for you. It made me feel a bit sick at the time. Thanks for giving more info. And to @DeeVee and @P.J. as well. I suppose there were tiers of people who were seen as disposable, and Eve was shielded for a time due to that tier. Once they were clearly getting rid of characters like Justin or Amanda, then she was also on that list (I know she left before they did but it wasn't that long before). Characters like Eve, quiet, able to be used in many avenues, are important for community, or they should be, although she had clearly reached a natural end. The problem is no one really replaced her - all the characters who were likely seen as dull were shipped out from 83-85, and we were left with an unbalanced canvas (and characters who were meant to be exciting but were still dull, like Calla, Simon, et al).

    • I just find her obnoxious and I need somebody to start checking her (other than Bill) without couching it in you’re so strong and wonderful and Bill did you so wrong. Even Anita pulls punches with her. Her personality would definitely rub some people the wrong way and I hope once the canvas evolves beyond Dupreeland, she gets some adversaries who aren’t villains or 90-lb. weaklings like Haley.
    • Wow.... Anita and Dani are the ultimate symbol of mean girls.   I hate to tell this to Dani... but Eva's ability to do hair is a much more coveted job and skill than Dani's modeling.   I doubt Dani could cut it if she lost her money and was truly forced to start over from square 1.
