I forgot all about the Ronn Moss shot at B&B from Ron and Frank. Thank you for reigniting this painful memory.

You're welcome (and my apologies, lol).

I guess Ed Sheeran wanted too much money?

But seriously. I felt truly sorry for the members of Player, because, to me, the whole thing smacked of humiliation at their expense. If I had been one of the other band members, I so would've kicked Ronn Moss' ass for agreeing to the gig.

Meh? Wasn't their song used in a mop commercial around this time? I have seen way more embarrassing things happen to people on GH. The cast at least pretended they were into it.

Frank thinks his inside jokes are so clever and if we don't laugh we don't get it. I get it...I don't want to. Watching the Player stuff makes me so irritated the show spent so much time and effort on a bunch of kids. I am surprised I didn't see Child of the Corn Joss glowering in the background. Emma/Spencer/Cameron literally turned out to be nothing in the scheme of things although I don't rule it out when the show eventually brings back Cam and Spencer.

This weekend, I watched a couple of late June 1993 episodes.

The show has decent energy in all the stories, even in the news I don't like (Victoria / Bill / Holly). In my opinion, the strongest material surrounds Karen and Jagger. It should be clear to the audience by now that Ray Conway sexually abused Karen as a child. That dramatic tension builds nicely in scenes. I appreciate the work that was done to make Rhonda a human being compared to the cariacture we were introduced to in 1992. Rhonda has a bad history with men, exhibited by her experiences with Frank (Gary Hudson) the cop during the May episodes. I can see why Rhonda (foolishly) wouldn't understand why Karen wouldn't want to see Ray after explaining how so many guys she went out with bolted the minute she revealed she had a kid.

Rhonda's relationship with Alan Quartermaine is also so much more complex than I would imagine. Two broken people looking to connect with an undercurrent of sexual tension that both, in previous lives, would have acted upon. In these episodes, Rhonda was gushing about how Alan had popped by Karen's graduation party. It's these relationships that make the little episode by episode moments rich.

There is tension between Karen and Jagger due to Karen's secret, who, like Rhonda and Alan, are also two broken people hurt by the past.Jagger's broken home (he has located Gina, but she wants nothing to do with him). There is a little moment where Jagger is showing Ruby the newspaper ad for the fight and how he was hoping that Mike would see the ad and contact him. It's a tender moment and Ruby reassures him it's still possible. Karen's neuroses involving the men in her life seem grounded in her abuse and her inability to process this. There are a lot of little moments I appreciate where Karen tries to explain why she has abandoned Ray's locket (a graduation present) and trying to maneuver Rhonda so that she doesn't have to be alone with Ray.

In other stories, there is nice movement. Sean confronts Jessica about the possibility of Jessica being pregnant with Jessica saying she doesn't want to know whether or not she is. Andreef plays it less as an act of manipulation, but rather a realization this could upend her world in so many different ways involving both Sean and her career.

With Tracy on the run, Jenny starts to feel guilty about keeping the truth about Tracy's role in the accident secret. There is a nice scene with Jenny and her visiting mother, Angela, talking over Jenny's decision regarding the secret citing how she had ruined her marriage to Ned because she just didn't tell the truth. I know people don't have much use for Paul and Jenny, but it was one of my favorite scenes in these episodes. Carol Lawrence plays all the versions of Angela Eckert so well, but I do love this sorta social climbing menace who meddles in her kids lives the most. Bill also got harassed by her in her visit, which gave some nice insight into the Bill / Sly dynamic.

The Bill / Victoria / Holly stuff is of little interest to me. I don't know what the long-term plan was here had Genie Francis not returned as the Summer in Provenance stuff had been going on since October, 1992, and I think they revealed the Victoria angle by February. With that said, the script writing is stellar and the calculating moves by both Victoria and Holly to win Bill is well done, but would have been better suited for Katherine / Scotty / Lucy.

There was a little bit of Katherine planning on returning to New York and Scotty wanting to go with her. Lucy, of course, is jealous. It's all a nice continuation of Scotty's grief and the pregnancy, but I do wonder what would have happened with Katherine had Levinson stayed.

There was a lot of stuff about the boxing match coming up between Jagger and AJ. I don't necessarily understand where any of this is going. The summer had a lot of animosity between A.J. and Jagger as I seem to recall (or at least I imagine there was issues with Jagger and the Q boys when they were slut shaming Karen). Maybe they were heading for some sorta of Jagger / Brenda / AJ / Julia / Ned scenario with Karen and Stone/Mike. I don't know. The rivalry is decent, but I am often left wondering if A.J. doesn't want Jagger for himself. Also worth noting, I saw some scenes before Paul and Tracy's wedding from 1991 where Gerald Hopkins' A.J. was putting the moves on Julia, pre- Nancy Eckert.

May sweeps was so strong and so much story climaxed that there is a bit of a lull as the new stories are being set in place, but I still find it all very interesting.

I always love when you post your thoughts on old episodes. You bring depth especially to stories I ignored or didn't care for lol. I agree Jagger/Karen are strong in this period. The story is heavy and I think it's a lot for two teenagers, but I understand why Jagger/Karen are so popular. I still don't like Karen though lol.

I was always curious about the boxing story as well. I thought it was fun although I had no idea why it was happening. Was there a popular movie about boxing at the time? Was it a thing? I never exactly understood the AJ/Jagger rivalry either. Sure, Jagger could be mad at AJ for slut shaming Karen, and AJ could be mad at Jagger for stealing Karen from Jason, but the stakes weren't that high and they hated one another so much. I can't really see a long-term plan for this story even if you were going to set up Brenda/AJ or have Julia/AJ/Ned re-ignite. I suppose it did set up the mob/Sonny story when Jagger refused to throw his fights.

I don't think the boxing story was meant to reference any recent movies. There was 1992's Gladiator, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Marshall, but that wasn't a hit. I suspect that GH's story was playing a little bit of follow the leader with DOOL's then-recent boxing story involving Austin.

This might be more appropriate for the DOOL history thread, but I want to know if early Austin took some inspiration from Mark Wahlberg. Boxing's featured in the "Good Vibrations" video, Austin's introduction has him stripping in public, Austin boxed as "Boston Austin" ... it's probably a coincidence, but maybe it isn't. And to tie it back to GH, ASJ followed Mark as Calvin Klein's lead male model.

I actually did think it was a thing because of the Austin plot as well. I figured I was too young and missed some sort of boxing phenomenon. It's a good way to get guys half dressed I suppose.

This is neither here nor there really but I was watching the Caroline/JfK jr. story and they make it seem like the Baywatch guy/Caroline's boyfriend was the next CK model. And I was thinking it was ASJ that succeeded Marky Mark.

Yeah, I guess the writers were like, "Well, we can't make them models ..." (Even though I don't think B&B had male model characters around this time.)

I think you have the correct progressions, yes. Marky Mark to Antonio Sabato Jr. to Michael Bergin.

They could have made Jagger a model though. He was in campaigns with Brenda with that boxing stuff. Maybe that's too on the nose or something, but ASJ was more believable as a dumb model himbo than an actual cop lol.

Thank you! Because I was like the show is clearly erasing ASJ as a Calvin Klein model, which fair. It's not even a narrative point and ASJ is, well, you know. I just remember him getting way more popular during his run on GH due to that and his Janet Jackson video.

I think Bergin was before Antonio. A google search has Antonio taking over as the main image in 1996, which lines up with my memory. He didn’t do it until after GH. So the show may be wrong about a lot, but I think it got how big a deal it was for Bergin to get that contract when he did as Marky Mark’s successor to CK. CK was incredibly significant at that time for men’s fashion when it came to pop culture.

Turns out you're correct. Michael was the direct successor to Marky Mark, in 1994, and then Antonio took the reins in 1996. What threw me is that when Antonio was announced, he was described as the "first celebrity model since 1992." True enough, since Antonio and Mark were famous before their model gigs, while Michael became famous from his.

@carolineg

On an unrelated note, here's a tangent from my notes for this week's episodes in 1986. It turns out that Laurelton is in South Carolina and you actually can't get there from Port Charles with a direct flight. Jennifer was planning to take the shuttle from PC to New York (specifically LaGuardia) and then down to Laurelton. This renews my annoyance at how earlier in the year, the Laurelton-PC journey seemed to be able to be completed in near-consecutive scenes. Then again, it was 1986 and flying was much different then.
