I forgot that Jax came on while Ricky Martin was still on this show!

He didn't. Miguel left in 1995. Jax first appeared in early '96.

As for an older woman I'm pretty sure you're referring to Ruby Anderson, Luke and Bobbie's aunt and surrogate mother. The madam of a brothel who raised them after their parents died. She ran Kelly's for many years and was a regular character after first appearing in 1979. The actress, Norma Connelly, died in 1998 as did Ruby not long after.

Pretty sure the woman on the beach with Sonny is Brenda.

Ahh, thank you! For the older lady, she's first in the opening at the 12:44 mark (and a few others). I just looked up the character of Ruby and that is her - thank you :)

You're right! I just looked it up and Ricky Martin left GH in October 1995 and Jax came on in January 1996. It's strange though because the one version starting at 7:15 has both characters in the opening. It goes Jax, Brenda and then Miguel (7:44 to 7:46). I guess they didn't take Ricky out of the opening for a few months after he left, interesting.

Thanks again! I just love that opening of GH.

I believe Ricky Martin was let out of his contract early to do Les Mis on Broadway, so he might appear in the credits for a bit after he left. They didn't always update them that quickly.

And, the internet does not back me up on this, but I remember Miguel making a quick cameo after he initially left when Sonny/Lily are about to get married. Brenda calls him to get him to help break up the wedding and he declines and tells her she's being a crazy person. This does not deter Brenda however. I hope someone else on this board remembers this and I am not having Miguel Morez hallucinations.

And, yes, it's Brenda/Sonny on the beach. Them jumping off the tram and them on the beach appeared for years in the credits-long after VM left. I would almost say all the way through the Faces of the Heart opening era.

After the initial couple of updates, they were not always very quick with the changes later on. It was one of the complaints you would see in soap magazines about these kinds of openings (how quaint that sounds now lol), that they didn’t update them enough.

Lucy with the eyebrow, and Lois with her nails in the shot are two of my favorites, as was the shot with Robin and Stone turning to camera and smiling. I loved those Puerto Rico insert action shots, Jason and Robin on the beach, the triple L diner blowing up, Bobbie, Amy and Dr Hardy with the gurney. It was great opening for that era. For all the faults I had with JFP, the last few updates looked better than the opening had looked in a long time. Skye has a great shot, as does Dillon. I also loved the overlapping shots of Scotty, Laura, Luke in the later era. Poor Mac and his turtleneck though, he never got an updated shot.

He came back as you said, I also remember it. I wonder if he was given an out, and when he was due back Guza was there and had no interest in the character, so they let him out permanently. I know that HW team set up Brenda/Jax trying to make Sonny jealous, and falling for each other for real, and had a roadmap to clink/boom pretty early on.

It's been so long, but I think Riche let him do Broadway with the intent of bringing him back if necessary. I don't think Miguel's tour was more than a few months. I assume Jax was an easy filler for the spot Miguel could have played in the Clink/Boom arc, especially since Jax/Brenda were much better received than Miguel/Brenda were. Although on paper, Miguel being the father of Lily's child/ex-fiancé would make the stakes higher since Jax really couldn't care less about Lily.

Considering Jax was initially for Lois and Rena decided to leave the show probably shuffled some things around to make it work. Besides no one was really clamoring for a Miguel return and I feel like ABC daytime was really obsessed with Australian actors in this era lol.

That shifted pretty quickly because Rena didn’t decide to leave until later on. That whole HW transition is very interesting, because MVJ and Guza both said Labine was very good to work with as far as letting them set stuff up so they hit the ground running. Carly being one thing we now know Labine didn't create. I would love for MVJ to speak about Jason’s accident and Jax, because I still have questions as to who set both in motion and when.

Guza had no problem setting things up and tweaking things very noticeably before his name hits the credits on several of his tenures at GH.

Well, I don't think a pregnant Lois hanging around Jax would have been the best look regardless. Obviously I have 0 problem with Jax ending up with Brenda. I like the idea of introducing a new character and having them chemistry test around town instead of having a super set plan.

Honestly Jason's accident and Jax feel very Guza to me. I have no idea though. While Labine loved some depressing stories Stone dying on top of Jason being in an accident feels like too much for Labine. How much more can we hurt Robin? Lol.

The way it immediately impacted the Q’s feels very Guza to me too because it quickly stops being about them. One thing Labine did was center the Quartermaines, and we would have seen more of Monica and Alan in relation to Jason than him immediately being shifted towards Sonny, Robin, and helping to bring Carly onto the scene. We did see them, but the story quickly shifts away from the family as the focal point.

At the time I did think it was a good move for Jason as a character. Looking back, Idk? He always should have gotten his memory back. I do think they tried to keep Jason in the mix with Emily and Lila, but Monica/Alan did get shifted on the story.

Y'all - the mid-late 90's/early 00s GH opening is Top 3 for me and I found this 30 minute video of every single iteration of the theme. I'm obsessed and this brings back so many wonderful memories.

Gosh I miss AJ and Jason as brothers (Kanan's version of AJ). That storyline really grabbed me and made me interested in GH as a young teen (can you guess why haha). My parents only watched AMC, so when I was home alone during the summers, I thought it was a sin to watch GH and others when they were at work LOL.

I forgot that Jax came on while Ricky Martin was still on this show!

I love Lucy's eyebrow raise in those first few years.

I didn't realize Rick Hearst joined GH that early enough to be in this opening, I love it. For the life of me, I don't remember Faith, Summer, Lydia or Cameron. Who is the older lady that opens it for a while in the middle? Thank gosh Tracy and Sam make it to this opening before they change it.

I need to do a 90s GH watch in my retirement. Who is that running with Sonny on the beach in most of those openings? I love how Felicia and Mac ended the opening most years, they were so sweet.

I need to do a top 10-20 soap opera opening thread at some point.

It's amazing how young all these characters look and how rich the characters are compared to now.

The Luke & Laura shot of them hugging cringes me out now. I prefer their solo shots especially as stated with the overlap of Lucky, Scott, Laura & Luke.

Did it mean anything being at the end or was there no point. I always wondered if Felicia & Mac rounding up the intro was significant in anyway.

One wonders how you'd do a new version of that with the cast of now. Who'd start, who'd finish, how you order the characters, any recurring characters jump on like Ned or Kevin or Scott maybe.

Yes! I love the Lois one and the Scotty/Laura/Luke overlapping that closes it out. I thought Sonny looked really good in his first intro too. Oh and Jax at the 23:07 mark of that video was his best look ever, very handsome.

I liked when they added the names too. I remember AMC started doing that as well and it just helps.

On the Miguel thing, I get not having the time or maybe even budget to make timely updates (GL just stopped having their characters in the intro altogether in the mid-90s partly bc of that I think, which made me so sad)... but they took the time to update it by adding Jax but not removing Miguel, so I'm guessing the idea that he was still on contract technically but was written out early so he could do his play makes sense.

Good question! I always assume the opener and closer are significant characters to the show. I come from AMC and you always had Erica Kane close out the intro, which made sense. I think Felicia and Mac were pretty popular in the 90s.

Gosh, GH's current opening is seizure-inducing to me because it's so quick. I know they have a ton of characters, and they include their recurring characters too which I love, but man it moves too quickly. I think now there is no current method to their order, they have several variations of it and the characters just seem to be in randomized order for each. I would probably have Tracy and Sonny open/close the intro given their status on the show. Carly, Jason and Alexis could also lay claim to those spots too I guess.

When this intro premiered, Felicia and Mac were doing a lot of heavy lifting storywise, and Felicia was solidly a lead character who was front and center in an umbrella storyline, Ryan Chamberlain. I think their placement reflected that for the time. They were both very central and had a slow burn romance going when Riche stabilized the show those few months before Luke and Laura returned.

I don’t think he should ever get his memory back. What I resented and still do not like is they treated his feelings about the Quartermaines at that time as the actual truth, instead of showing Jason more deeply seeing the flaws of his dangerous life with Sonny sooner as he grew and developed. The Jason that woke up was kind of a rebellious teenager. The Jason that existed from the time he claimed Michael onward was a young adult that spent too long defending Sonny when he was clearly worse than the Q’s.

The entire AJ/Carly story should have played out differently. But I am also not a fan of Sonny/Carly in any version, and think the writers focusing so much on them and propping them destroyed the show in a way it never fully recovered from.

To me, the way Jason acted when Alan died (which was a huge mistake anyway), the genuine remorse and things he said should have been a turning point. He had endured AJ being killed, and Sonny’s relationship with Emily, and not long after Michael being shot. The break with Sonny was set up and never fully enacted.
