Seriously? What's manufactured? Melissa Archer auditioned (along with a lot of other actresses) for the role of Natalie Buchanan who was conceived by the writing team and created as a member of the Buchanan family. I think it's been well documented that she was almost out in 2004(?) before she capitulated and accepted the offer that was on the table. If she had not, tptb would have recast the role because the character was central to their storylines. The way they'd recast Jessica, Tina, Kelly, Kevin, Joey, Viki, Dorian, Blair, Clint and a host of others at different times. Unless by "chosen ones" you mean she was chosen over her competition for the role, I don't think I understand you. I think the term "chosen ones" applies more accurately to those actors who were sought out and hired and THEN the writing staff was charged with creating a role to accommodate them. Farrah Fath is an example. Renee Goldsberry is another. And to a lesser extent because she was a returning character, Gina Tognoni and I only say that because there was no real need for Kelly (at least that was what FV said when Heather Tom's contract was not renewed). and it seemed obvious to me for well over a year they had no idea what to do with her. When I think of the many capable actors who have come and gone in the 10 years since Melissa joined the show, many have left of their own accord to pursue other opportunities (Melissa Gallo, Jessica Morris, Erin Torpey, Tika Sumpter). Others were not satisfied with the contracts they were offered. And then there were others who were let go for budgetary or storyline driven reasons.

All the characters are manufactured. They're fictional so they're somebody's creation. How it's determined which are central to the storylines shifts over time, and yes there is a certain amount of good fortune involved, I guess.

Re: Cheap's post, I was looking back at the last ten years or so and riffing with the idea that some characters seem to get inexplicably handpicked for these lengthy soap careers when they aren't much different from the many others who hit the revolving door. Natalie came to town with the "Viki's REAL daughter" s/l and if there are any characters I expect to have some longevity on this show, it should be Viki's children. I think Natalie's brother/not-brother/brother Rex is a *chosen one* moreso than Natalie. David is similarly a favorite who got incorporated into the show's main family. Then there are characters like Cristian and AMC's Aidan where one wonders why the show kept them around for so long, And then there's someone like Ford who is the best/worst example of them all.

Peter was Irene's brother/Todd's uncle who raised Todd.
