Yes - Lorraine discussed starting out as an assistant under Agnes - her first job was opening fan mail.  She said it was invaluable experience to hear directly from the audience.

That's delightful. I have always liked her so very much. And, thanks for replying.

The episodes I'm watching from 1988 are written by Lorraine Broderick. That's my first taste of her writing. And so far... I'm impressed.

Which of the Lincs is this in the early episodes posted recently? It's not James Karen but both this guy and Joanna Miles(?) come off like they're in a downmarket Noel Coward revival - too haughty for the room.

Them aside, the show, especially in its early days and various glory periods, always comes off like a warm embrace or apple pie. You can see why it rocketed off. I really liked the scene with Joe and First(?) Kate, however unsteady she was. The writing for her was fun.

That’s Paul Dumont. It’s hard to find much information about him online, but his Linc reminds me of what Peter White’s Linc would be, in mannerisms and presence at least.

This recent trip down early AMC memory lane has solidified my appreciation for the era, and I almost want to call it the “P&G era” because of how heavily influenced it is by Agnes’s experience with GL and AW. The two-family focus, more doctors and lawyers than what AMC would later have, the eccentric grandparent, Phoebe and Charles as more menacing figures, etc. I would say it took until 1974-1975 for it to come into its own while retaining those earlier influences.

Jack and Erica were fine in the late 80s/early 90s...but their affair causing her to lose custody of Bianca should have been the thing to end them as a couple.

Only reason the show kept reviving them.as a couple was due to Jack not sparking with anyone else.  And as a stop gap before Erica got her next love interest.

The show tested him with Natalie, Barbara, Angelique, Laurel, Gloria, and Carmen.  None of them took.

I admit to being amazed that anyone was tested with Laurel. The majority of AMC fans that I knew were in total agreement in their hatred of all things Laurel. I just remembered that there were fans who wouldn't even write out her name instead just typing "L*". It makes me wonder if she was as bad as we were sure she was.

On my last few eps from January 1988... well... Skye is so stunning. But she has sort of an ugly personality. The best combination. What strikes me is how not a single character can be described as only good or bad. Everyone has nuances.

Oh, that's such a lovely compliment to Broderick & also to Nixon.

Is this Skye a redhead? I ask because more than one actress inhabited the character. Of course I'm not sure Robin Christopher always was a redhead, so I may be leading you into a blind alley.

Yup, she is! And I love her in every single scene so far. One of the characters I'm most drawn to. 🙈   Here is a clip from the last episode I saw.

That's one of the best parts of those years.

I don't remember if they ever gave Skye enough motivation for getting so involved in going after Cindy, even with her love for Stuart.

Robin Christopher was at her best as Skye when she was softer (like here) - she became much too hard later on.

I hope I have a long good period to look forward to. I am actually planning to binge watch all of it... from 1988 till the end... but what year would you say things go... sour.  And do they improve after that? ❤️

It's hard for me to say exactly - I think the show becomes more generic but there's still mostly moments to enjoy, even if things can get dull at times. The biggest changes will kick in around 93/94 into moving AMC away from what suited it.

Thank you! Hearing that I still have maybeee 5 years to go before that happens is... well... encouraging. The storytelling quality is great so far. I am yet to encounter a cringe scene or stupid dialogue. Which is very shocking to me. I'm used to nit-picking and finding faults. And nearly a month in, with the help of google, I think I'm finally connected to who is who and what is happening in 90 percent of the storylines. I still think some people's sisters are their ex wives, but I'm learning. 🙈

Yes, Robin Christopher, AMC's Skye Chandler, later on AW Lorna #2 & also where she met her husband, IRL I mean.

*Of course, Susan Lucci's the type to have chemistry with just about any man.  I still remember fondly when Drake Hogestyn was one of her co-hosts at the Daytime Emmys one year, and thinking, "Damn, somebody's gotta get that man off DAYS and on AMC pronto!"

At 92nd St Y, Kelly Ripa marveled the same - she said Susan had chemistry with a doorknob !
