This makes me incredibly happy. I love that you guys are finding my overly excited ramblings "fun". I would have tried to make more structured reviews like I've started to do with AW, but AMC is not a show I can watch slowly. As soon as I start... I can't stop. And thank God Margaret DePriest did not last long as HW. She's not my cup of tea, although I don't know what she did with AMC.

Right now I'm in a binge again. Great karma for the bully Skye. She is in a coma. Ha! That's what happens when you act like a despicable bitch in soap operas. But I have to be honest... I preferred her awake... She is quite boring in a coma. But when you play with fire...Literally. That's what happens.

Silver is sinking more and more in her lies about the attack. Jeremy is starting not to believe her. Palmer is trying to scare Natalie in order for her to come and live with him... and is ringing her phone anonymously.

Barbara confronted Adam about his plan to axe her once she got the magazine up in the figures. It was nice seeing someone shut Adam up and Barbara did it marvelously.

I love all of it.

So, in the past 24 hours I have watched 3 episodes of China Beach, 2 episodes of 1988 AMC, celebrated my birthday,

& I'm due at a GH Jarly Zoom in an hour. This is entirely NOT usual for me!

AMC 1-5-1988

The actor Todd McKee is familiar to me because he played the youngest Capwell son on Santa Barbara. Who is he right now on AMC? Today was mostly about Julie and Nina. Ross, of course has just had the biggest change, his first day in prison. Besides the guy who led him to his cell his only contact was meeting a prisoner/chaplain who knew he was in for rape & told him about a group that meets that is Sex Offenders. Ew & Ugh. Why do I need to get to know a rapist? Oh, yeah, because I'm a US soap fan.

Okay, Julie. Love Lauren Holly! Again, she looks so freakin' young! Now, I do not understand what the relationship is between her & Ellen. Nor do I know who her "real" mother is who lied about her biological father for years & years. It seemed to me that Julie & Ellen had just had a kind of coming back together & that Julie was all set & excited to be moving back (I think) into Ellen's house. So, yesterday they said "No more secrets between us, going forward." In that spirit today Ellen told Julie that her "real" father isn't actually dead & instead is Mark, Erica's brother & Ellen's lover. To say that Julie did not take this news well would be a huge understatement! First, she flat out refused to believe it. Once convinced, she's very upset about it to the point that now she's not going to move in at Ellen's. Mark came in & tried to talk to her but it did no good. After Julie left, Ellen & Mark reaffirmed their relationship, nuzzled, kissed, etc. Julie went & talked to her boyfriend, who looks familiar but I haven't figured out who he is yet. He says she belongs with him.

The show began with Palmer on the phone, worried about Nina, who arrives just as he hangs up the phone. I guess the woman in the scene is Nina's mother. Nina is all upset because she's married both to Cliff & to Matt. She's concerned about her legal status. She loves Cliff, always has loved him, never stopped loving him. It was just inconvenient with his being dead & all, so Matt was there for her. She married him. She seems to regret it. She seems to think she never really loved him, maybe it was just gratitude & being lonely & grief-stricken over Cliff. Also she mentions a son she has with Cliff. Didn't see him & do not know his name. We did see both Matt & Cliff, no, not together. We'll come back to Nina.

Natalie! She has a meeting with a reporter. Her expectation is that it will be usual, regular, nice but it is definitely not. The reporter is rude, crude, aggressive, etc.

We saw Cliff with Doc Martin.

Then, Cliff is at Palmer's, in the front room by himself. There's a 3-4 step down from the next room, or perhaps a hall. Cliff is looking slightly up watching Nina descend those few steps down to him. The look on his face is so full of love for her. They embrace but they do not kiss. She moves on into the room & they begin to talk.

We saw Nina express that she never loved Matt & should not have married him & the scene dissolves to Matt's face. He's been daydreaming this, which does not speak well for his current frame of thought, at all!

Checked my notes & I have said everything I have to say! I'm going to give today a 9/10.

Got a bit of closing credits. Agnes Creator & Stephen Schneckel (sp?) EP.

You know I love recaps like that and I especially love you have started rating the episodes the same way I do. I am giving myself props for inspiring you.

I started watching from the January 9th, 1988 episode, so these few episodes from the beginning I skipped for some reason, I don't remember why. Maybe I just clicked on the 9th and couldn't stop watching. Who knows.

I'm interested to see if you feel the same way I do about the future episodes. Again - to me the show was likeable, but not amazing till Erica gives birth to Bianca mid February. Then it gets times and times more dynamic and interesting. And all of the stories pick up pace.

I just feel sad that we won't be watching the same episodes at the same time and comparing notes. Because of my binge-watching that is not slowing down... I'm afraid. But I'm sure you are going to be focusing on different things than me. You know me, give me am emotionally unstable woman full of jealousy and a conniving antagonist, and I'm good to go.

I'm up to April 25.

Silver has gone berserk. I love that this character that just 80 episodes ago I thought was a boring mouse... has completely surprised me. And I find this incredibly realistic - life has shown me - it's always these bland, boring people (on first impression) that snap in the end. Silver has been swallowing her anger and frustration for so long, this has been building up for so long, that it was mean to... explode.

Pamela The Viper is doing everything she can to get Travis's attention and sadly and disappointingly it seems that he is responding. I can't wait till Erica finds out who her husband's partner is - a shadow figure from decades ago. We all pay for our past.

Speaking of Erica - she is touring with her circus in New York and trying to pitch that "Ruin-Natalie's life idea" unaware that while she is so focused on ruining Natalie... her own private life is at risk. Love the irony.

The show is on FIRE.

Wow. she's mesmerizing!  so much acting in 30 seconds of facial expression.
I gather that's the character Silver Kane?  Not a character I remember well.
But how could I have forgotten this scene? Maybe it's an episode I never saw.

This must be the same actress today:

    • Thank you @dragonflies ! Appreciate you finding this. There's a lot in the article about Black representation on soaps, history, quoting quite a few people. I replied on the behind-the-scenes thread here: https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/66310-btg-history-behind-the-scenes-articles-photos/?do=findComment&comment=2023349
    • Lemay came on in 1971, Rauch in 1972. From 1971-1974, they pretty much continued the show as it had been under Agnes Nixon, with its escapist star-crossed love triangles. But then in 1975, with the expansion to an hour, it seemed they were given permission by NBC or Lin Bolen, to do more of their own thing. They did and transformed the show into a high-brow theater hour, focusing on their favorites and on psychological conflicts. It was good from 1975-1979, but it was a bit overhyped and wasn't sustainable.  Lin Bolen was into psychological, realistic drama, as seen from the failed soap opera she developed  and pushed from 1974-1975, How to Survive a Marriage. I wonder how much of the new one hour AW in 1975 was Bolen encouraging/ordering Lemay and Rauch to incorporate some elements of her How to Survive a Marriage. Or perhaps Lemay and Rauch were fans of How to Succeed, and incorporated elements of it on their own?
    • Thank you to dragonflies for finding this article. Victoria Rowell says was asked to audition for Anita Dupree https://apnews.com/article/beyond-gates-renewal-d7369f7a60a0a992483294acb950ef6d  And more about the article:  Discussion of Black representation and history on soaps. Colorism.  Fan engagement.  Quotes from Victoria Rowell, Darnell Williams, Veronica Redd, some professors, and some viewers.  (And a quote from George Cheeks from last year). Ms. Rowell is interviewed and talks about her history on Y&R and how a character can inspire viewers. Regarding BTG After “Beyond the Gates” was announced, Rowell says she received a letter from CBS acknowledging her place in the show’s DNA. “I have been contacted with great respect from the powers that be at CBS, thanking me for all of my hard work, recognizing the work that I have done that has influenced this moment and I appreciate that,” she said. She was “astounded” to be asked to audition for the matriarch role of Anita Dupree, but says she didn’t hear back after submitting her tape. The role went to Tamara Tunie, whom Rowell describes as “a brilliant actress.” CBS did not respond to a request for comment. Great article.  The same Associated Press author Alicia Rancilio did some nice interviews for the GH 60th anniversary in 2023.  Typed articles on the AP website and also video interviews on AP youtube.
    • Agreed that Phillip most definately needed to stay on the canvas if GA was going to play him. Too much history going back to the Dobsons there. Also, they were not hamstrung on Phillip/Beth the way they were on Jeva, so the characters had room to move on to others logically and stay in each others orbits...(I am not saying what they chose to do with Beth in Ruachieville was good but..) I think Reva should have been brought back to cause trouble for Josh and Annie, go through angst, get together with Josh and leave town together. There was no where else to go with them after that as post Annie is when all the ridiculous things happened to keep them on screen.   But Zimmer had been in Hollywood where a Khan said about O'leary..."Realized they couldnt get arrested" lol and she was bound and determined to keep going (not that I blame her, a check is a check) and the Jeva nuts (prompted by Zimmer and Newman at times) would scream if they were off screen for 5 minutes.  The only possible story for Reva was for Josh to be killed or for him to finally have enough of her and leave town. I thought Reva was most interesting during that weird post RN period when she broke up with Kyle and was living with Cane...she had jobs, she was involved with a lot of different people and was not always the center of the story.
    • I think Ms. Rowell should be one of Anita's former bandmates... maybe the one that still harbors resentment over being abandoned. I think the Articulettes probably started out more like The Supremes.. and probably when the other bandmates wanted to go in a more funk/synth pop direction (as what happened to groups in the late 70s/early 80s)... I could have seen Anita bail and forge a solo career since perhaps that genre was not to her liking... and the group disbanded. Wasn't Ms. Morgan also doing another project when the show was casting?  Maybe one day she'll join the show when a role opens up and her schedule is open.     I don't mind the set, but is it a hip place.. or a more upscale after work/weekend night spot.   I'm not sure what vibe it's trying to go for. Orphey Jean's is my favorite... it's a great gathering/neutral meeting place where people of high incomes, middle incomes, and working class can all gather and hang out.
    • Oh, see, I love it; it feels very east coast, and I've been in places like it before. It's unique. And ugh, anyone but Victoria Rowell. Please, anyone but her.
    • It's not going to change, as said plenty of times.

Without a proper person to come in and not be afraid of pissing audiences off, it isn't going to happen. Okay, no, per Zach Tinker there seems to be no investment, not needed, and HELL NO!
    • God forbid someone is upset with their spouse for not being honest with them.   I swear... Misandry is so rampant nowadays.
