It's weird how, in the January 6 episode, Michael Brainerd's Joey is being so goofy, a little similar to RPG's take on the character (although nowhere near as hammy or tic-laden). He's so believable as the bratty little brother.

Those flashbacks of "scary" Eddie Dorrance kind of cracked me up. Based on his other soaps it's tough for me to see him as a villain.

I know that Dixie loved Will, but wasn't she on very bad terms with him when he died? Why was Janet such a trauma to her for so many years? Wasn't a part of her relieved Will was gone?

How far did the Janet/Tad thing go?

Definitely not, it's just weird how they would go on about Janet as her worst nightmare, etc.

That scene with Billy Clyde and the machine gun is so hilariously WTF. 1989-1990 seems like such a weird period for the show.

I don't think it was weird. Dixie loved Will a lot, and Janet brutally murdered him.

As for Janet and Tad: I believe Janet (when she was still 'Jane') worked as an accountant for Orsini. She developed a crush on Tad, and she flirted with him, ect. It didn't last long, if my memory is correct.

I guess in the context of soaps, where so many insane things happen, and are forgotten, it's strange to me that it was still brought up so often, especially since the show had made Will into the evil of evils and Janet seemed more sympathetic.

This episode also has a flashback to when Jeff proposed to Mary. That must have been 1973, 1974? Is that episode out there? Was it ever on WOST?

I loved seeing the brief moment from Erica's disco. Phoebe and Langley dancing the night away while Charles and Mona sedately stroll.

I think I asked this years ago but don't remember the answer. Did Kate Collins ever do Mirror Janet?

Oh yes! She invented mirror Janet.

I don't know if that Jeff/Mary episode was on WoST, Eric will remember. But WoST did have a partial early seventies episode in color.

Yeah, I love that disco clip and I think the original music played was Staying Alive. Would love to see them grooving to the real thing. Erica kills me with the disco whistle. Eric, are you listening our local disco expert? What was the deal with disco whistles, how did they become a thing?

Do forgive me if I mix anything up in reference to the anniversary episodes because I haven't fully rewatched yet, I'm working from memory... 17 years ago! wacko.png I got the AMC coffee table book as a gag gift from a friend for Christmas, can you believe?? I guess I had it all of ten days when the first anniversary episode aired.

I think I first read that book a few months after it came out - I got it at the library. That was my only real window into AMC, along with a VHS weddings tape. It's such a great book. That seems like a whole other universe, doesn't it?

Was this Langley's last episode? In that last bit he seemed a little envious of Verla laugh.png

Yeah. That's the January 6 episode. It's around 24 minutes in. At first I thought the snow was part of another flashback!

I'm trying to remember when that fox hunt story was. Was that when Alex Hunter was killed?

At least later in the episode the Mary/Jeff scene had some dialogue (not sure why they showed the scene with and without dialogue but who cares). The way he looks at her, with such starry-eyed devotion, I can kind of see why he was the only Jeff fans liked. I also wonder how much real life feelings between the actors were bleeding into the scene.

Wow there's a Paul/Anne clip too. Wasn't expecting that.

What a feast this must have been for viewers back then.

I can't even remember what they did for the 30th anniversary.

I think this was his last appearance. I remember seeing ol' Lang another random time before this and I honestly that may have been in '92 or something and we made a big deal about seeing him. I just remember that he was in a turtleneck and blazer and he had gained weight, or at least looked fuller in the face. When I saw him on that Shelley Taylor Morgan/Michael Logan E! show he was rather thin, I think that's when he was sick. They talked about his Nobody Cares About Langley album. tongue.png

With AMC and OLTL both, after their 25ths I tend to confuse the anniversary specials with the ten thousandth episode specials and the like. They had some slogan for thirty, or was it 35, and the three-zero/five was displayed in their graphics, like when giving the next day preview.

Edmund gave the poem on one occasion and I want to say that was the thirtieth anniversary or the ten thousandth episode.

Was that when they had that Crystal Ball (or whatever it was called) for a few years?

When I first got into Dark Shadows, one of the books on the show mentioned Louis being on AMC. At the time I assumed he must have a big role, but now I realize by then he barely featured.

    • She didn't want a hotel room; doubt she's going to want the apartment room, either. There was no reason to re-arrange the other one. This was the most logical move.
    • I just hope they don't move that lady in their apartment. Same. And Mike seemed to enjoy those scenes.

    • Bill and Smitty was the best part of today. I like the parallel that was drawn between them as "Dupree outsiders." It's similar to Bill's friendship with Ted and I enjoy both of the relationships that Bill has with them. I seriously wonder if anybody behind the scenes thought that the character of Bill was going to be as well liked as he is.  Btw, I see that they're not covering up Mike Manning's tat

Pamela talking like Bernadette Peters isn't really working for me though lol neither is Naomi and Jacob's part in June's storyline.  But I am interested in what's going to happen once Jacob gets Leslie to the police station.

date: Friday, May 16 | Gregori J. Martin, Lynn Martin | Phideaux Xavier Anita and Vernon versus Bill – I love it. Is Vanessa a dominatrix? That's kind of kinky, and Cody seems to love it, too! I love seeing Dana and Ted's dynamic right now; you can sense some kind of passion, and it's differing on both sides. I appreciate us building a connection between Bradley and Nicole. So, we've got the names of the Articulettes: Anita, Sharon and Tracy. A one-night-only kind of performance. Hoping they can pull this off. Dani and Pamela are a hoot together; I love their banter, and I'm so happy to see this friendship continuing to develop on screen. The anvil of Jacob and Naomi liking June being around; that's got to lead to something, no? Douglas, stop playing powerball with Joey. So Nicole wants to sell the house? Girl is jumping over divorce and right to the settling of the assets; thankfully, Vanessa has the keen sense to deny the offer to list the property. Notes: I like seeing different connections being built between characters right now: Bill and Bradley, Dani and Pamela, and Nicole and Vanessa. It's nice seeing things settling. I loved the scene of Pamela cooing over Joey's Instagram, given Cady McClain and Jon Lindstrom's real-life relationship history.
    • Boy, do I agree with this. These writers HAVE to know what they're doing when they add those "We're the Duprees" lines....at least I pray to God they do. If they don't, they're clueless. This family is -- like most families -- deeply flawed and going through it. There's something tone deaf about the "We're the Duprees" pronouncements all over the place.
    • Very interesting in what meal Anita and Tracy share.
    • Thanks for sharing your memories. It's so special to get to talk with your mother about a soap she watched when she was younger that you now watch. '70s feminism had to be much tougher, and other than maybe Search for Tomorrow (where the Kathy character is mostly unavailable in '70s form), Ryan's Hope may be the only soap that delved into this. Jill is such a fascinating character, one I'm not surprised was polarizing with viewers. So much about her probably shouldn't have worked, especially when you think of all the backstory thrown at viewers immediately (a previous love affair with Jack, being adopted and never feeling at home in the Coleridge family, being Frank's "other woman" for much of the decade). Nancy Addison was just so special, and the entitlement and arrogance of Jill felt offset by her vulnerability (which was not the case for the rest of her family).  Mary was also very important for feminist debates, and likely more popular with the audience, but I never really connected with her the way I did with Jill. Maybe because the inherent smugness of the Ryans felt like a wall.  Sometimes I wonder if it perversely helped Jill as a character that she was lumped with a complete dud of a partner for a year and a half, because it humanized her - why are you sacrificing your dignity for this loser?  @safe Thanks for reminding me of more Sarah Felder backstory. A great deal I had forgotten. I appreciate her sticking up for the Pat/Nancy story if it was struck down due to prejudice, but there was so much else wrong with that pairing (I say that as one of the few John Blazo fans). I suppose the narrative about Felder is just too easy to believe (and she never has spoken about her time on the show).
    • Leslie uses Tide with Downy and not the Tide with Oxi!
    • I am not sure either, but I'm riding with the outsiders regardless. There was an opportunity to use Anita to ground the family and make you root for them.  I wonder do they still have chemistry, I thought they did at ATWT.
