I grew to LOVE Lisa Peluso in the part. But for me, the true Ava began and ended with Roya Megnot. I actually sort of viewed Ava as a completely different character at that point, though I do admit I actually found her far more entertaining. It helped that my grandmother loved her so much. I remember watching with her one day and telling her I didn't really like the new Ava and asking her if she did. She reminded me that it was the same actress who played Wendy Wilkins on Search For Tomorrow years before. Search was my grandmother's one and only soap- she faithfully watched it from beginning to end. So for her, seeing Lisa scheming again on Loving made the show feel like home. I didn't understand until 5 years later, when Marcy Walker joined 'AMC' (I picked it up after SB's cancellation).

Either way, I grew to love Lisa, but my memories of Roya were never erased. Frankly, I actually think that Lila Roberts on AW was Peluso's defining role.

And ITA that she needs to come back to daytime, stat! She'd ABSOLUTELY be an asset to any show she joined. She's a gem.

Yeah, her opportunity on OLTL was wasted. I feel like OLTL, even moreso than AMC, was the perfect spot for so many talented AW and Loving/The City vets.

I'm not blessed with the abundance of Loving memories that Juniorz had, but he is dead on about the change in the tone of Ava despite the success of Peluso. Peluso felt more polished and not that Ava was ever dumb but Peluso seemed to have smartened her up, she didn't have that endearing naive vixen who makes mistakes inspite of herself quality. I also think that in terms of looks, Roya was a real find, one of those special darkly exotic soap actresses. Imagine if Amanda Setton's Kim and SMG's Kendall were the same character, compare and contrast the way in which they'd be depicted. I would also agree with Juniorz that Lila was more Lisa's signature role, even if not on paper. Like Marj Dusay's Vanessa.

"Lisa Peluso will return to play Ava very soon." That is hilarious, I never caught that but I do remember when she came back. That sounds like a very polite way of saying, "Now will all yall pressed [!@#$%^&*] stop blowing up our damn phone at this here studio!?!?"

I remember some photos of Roya and other women in the Wild West outfits for some fantasy or dream sequence Loving did. Was that before she had left the show in 1988?

Oh, and I love the story about your grandmother liking Peluso because she remembered her from SFT. While the conventional wisdom is often that actors can never translate from one big role to another, it's easy to forget how often that isn't true. That was great your grandmother was so devoted to SFT. If they had paid more attention to fans like her, perhaps they'd still be on the air.

Over the years, I've come to appreciate the rapport between ANOTHER WORLD's Ada and Rachel. Ada always loved Rachel, but she didn't take any b.s. from her (or anyone else). And even though Rachel mellowed over time, that no-nonsense grit nevertheless carried over into her relationships with her own children.

Also, Helen Gallagher and Kate Mulgrew were/are so similar both in appearance and disposition, their on-screen mother/daughter relationship as RYAN'S HOPE Maeve and Mary, respectively, was lifelike to the point of being eerie. Watching the reruns on SoapNet, there's a uniqueness in their bond that's simply missing when Mulgrew's revolving door of successors were in the role.

The biggest letdown with Maeve and Mary also happened to Maeve and Siobhan - they stopped giving mother and daughter scenes together, unless they were tedious recap scenes, like the agony of blonde bimbo Siobhan wailing snot-nosed to her mother about "Joeeeee." When Siobhan first started she had some incredible scenes with Maeve, some of the most complex and real ever for a mother/daughter on soaps.

You have to wonder what might have happened to the Rachel character if Constance Ford hadn't cared so much about the work and done so much to help Robin Strasser. I don't know if Victoria Wyndham also had her help, as VW was a seasoned soap actress, but she did seem very fond of Constance, as did everyone else in the Davis/Cory family.

    • John Black actually was the ultimate good guy soap hero. So I don’t mind the town gushing over him. It’s deserved.
    • Be glad it wasn't a Perry production.

    • The whole town gushing over John Black as if he was a saint is eye rolling.  I guess death really colors people's memories over his many flaws, but I guess that is normal and human nature. I'm still confused as to why Leo hasn't been written out.  The actor stank up two soaps with his sub par acting, what does he have on TPTB's to remain on these soaps.   What's the point of Cat?  I hope the new head-writers figure out her purpose and develop her character. And I much prefer scenes not focusing on John's death because life does go on for the world when someone passes.
    • Wasn't there a break in Zaslow's first run? I thought Roger was off-screen for a while, and when Zas came back, Roger was hiding at the boarding house and Nola figured out there was something hinkey about him. I'm pretty sure Simon chose to leave the first time and was replaced by RVV. I don't want to assume Jordan's issues played a role in his first departure, but Maeve said in an interview that at some point, it became very hard for her to work with him and she asked to work with him less. That seems to fit 1986, where suddenly Vanessa is essentially Ross' law clerk and not at every Lewis family moment.
    • He needs to divorce her arse with her constant cheating.   She's no better than Doug... she's F*cking pathetic.
    • I didn't know of any interruptions for Maeve Kinkead after her 1997 return. Her runs would then be 1981-1987, 1989-1996, 1997-2000, short arcs until the end. I knew Maureen Garrett second run was interrupted from a 2009 interview but I couldn't recall the exact year. Her runs would then be 1976-1980, 1988-2000, short arcs until the end.
    • As I said in May, I have no problem with Martin and Bradley being married. You can still do all the fun introloper storylines with them as you do everyone else. Both men of a certain age, and it is very believable for them to have either a first love or have been previously married. And, you can do it without either of them cheating!

I said something similar during the premiere week. Bill was the perfect age to play Martin as Vernon and Anita's child. I would've much preferred this version, but oh well.
    • I don't know how you want to count Maeve. She "retired" in '00, but would come back for appearances. I don't know however if she made an appearance in '01 or '03. In '02 I believe she came back for Josh and Reva's wedding. I assume she came back when Gina Tognoni took over the role of Dinah. And I know she was back for Ross' memorial service. Maureen Garrett was around until at least '00. I don't think Holly was in town when Ben returned though. I just got pissed off about Jerry all over again.
    • So, pretty sure Zaslow, Garrett, Kinkead, and Newman all chose to leave the first time. (If that's wrong, please correct me). Bernau - not sure why he left the first time. Was it voluntary? Or did they decide to write him out? They were writing so many out during that time period. It always seemed odd to me that they introduced Alex, FINALLY giving him someone he could talk to, and then he was written out. Or maybe that's why they made Alex his sister, so she could take his place as the head of the Spaulding family? Would love more intel on that if anyone knows. Simon - was he replaced by RVV? Or did he voluntarily leave the first time? It seems to me like one of those times TPTB decided to sex up or glamorize a character (and it clearly flopped). If he was fired, interesting he came back. Again, would love if someone could spill the tea. Clarke - I've always assumed he left because of his personal issues, but not sure if that was the case the first time.
