Ouch! Poor thing--never able to find love!

Well, Nikki's shooting and reconciliation was still Bell/Alden but she did write the climax of that story and most of the Katherine/Jill one. It's shocking to remember a time when Y&R was the best and with as little hype from its writers as possible.

1973 Summary

Fantasies of starting over with a completely new life are rarely fulfilled, but Dr. Brad Eliot was swept into his without forethought.

Distraught because the son of his fiancee, Barbara Anderson, died while he was operating on him, Brad Eliot walked away from his medical practice as a psychiatrist and neurosurgeon. Brad was actually the boy's father. As he left Chicago, circumstances went from bad to worse when his car and wallet were stolen. In a haze, he wandered into Genoa City with nothing more than the dirty clothes on his back. Then, after enjoying a meal at Pierre's restaurant, he had to admit he couldn't pay the tab. That's when Brad's luck actually changed for the better.

Stuart Brooks, the owner/publisher of The Genoa City Chronicle, overheard Brad's conversation with waitress Sally McGuire. Trusting his instincts that this was no ordinary panhandler, Stuart gave him a job. Fate continued to nudge Brad into a new life when he saw a news wire story declaring that Dr. Brad Eliot had been killed in a car accident. Clearly, the thief who stole his car and wallet had been killed and mistakenly identified, giving the real Dr. Eliot an opportunity to start his life over.

Stuart Brooks and his wife Jennifer had four daughters: Leslie, a rather shy pianist; Lauralee, called Lorie, an adventurous author; Chris, a journalist; and Peggy, a college student. Although Brad clearly chose to keep his past a mystery, he proved himself likable, helpful and basically honest. It was easy for Stuart to encourage a budding relationship between Leslie and Brad.

Before Brad came into her life, Leslie was totally absorbed in her music. She never dated and was far more comfortable at her piano than with men. But she was drawn to Brad and fell in love with him as he supported and encouraged her career, which took off beautifully. For the first time in her life, Leslie found the promise of happiness professionally and personally.

While Stuart approved of Brad's interest in Leslie, he was not thrilled when local medical student Snapper Foster (William Foster Jr.) caught the eye of his trusting daughter, Chris. Stuart was less offended by Snapper's blue-collar roots than by his indifference to Chris. (Snapper was so-named due to his tendency toward irritability and to "snap" at people.)

Handsome Snapper was not only putting himself through medical school, but being "man of the family" after his dad deserted them seven years earlier. The eldest son, Snapper was helping his mom Liz, a factory worker, put his brother Greg through law school and keeping a big-brother eye on his sister Jill who dreamed of being a fashion model while working as a beautician. Liz wished the best for all her children and encouraged Snapper to pursue a nice, well-bred girl like Chris. However, with enough obligations already, Snapper preferred to keep his freedom. Snapper was also seeing Sally McGuire, a waitress at Pierre's.

One evening, Chris invited Snapper to the Brooks home for dinner but he didn't show. After a day at school and work he had visited Sally, fell asleep and she conveniently forgot to wake him as he had asked. His half-truth--that he fell asleep after a full day--satisfied Chris enough to get her through the hurt of disappointment.

Her dad, however, grew more displeased with Snapper. When Stuart learned that Snapper was seeing Sally, he was quick to tell Chris that Snapper was cheating on her. Chris moved out and went to work as a secretary for Greg Foster, unaware that her dad had financially helped his new law practice in return for her employment. When she found out, she angrily quit. Greg was especially saddened because he had fallen in love with Chris.

One evening after an unsuccessful day of job hunting, Chris stopped by a local bar and met George Curtis who bought her a drink, seemed pleasant enough, and offered to escort her safely home. Once there, however, he raped her.

Jill was unhappy working at the salon, but wouldn't take Snapper's advice about going to college to broaden her chances for a career that would bring her the lifestyle she dreamed about. Instead, she won the trust of a rich, powerful and temperamental customer, Kay Chancellor. When Kay, an alcoholic, fired her personal secretary, Jill took the opportunity to enter the world she dreamed about. She convinced Kay to hire her.

1974 Summary

Chris Foster was still traumatized by her rape and refused to have sex with Snapper even though she loved him very much. Snapper showed a great deal of patience and respect for Chris, offering her emotional support but finding his own sexual pleasure with Sally McGuire.

Sally had fallen in love with Snapper, too, and was desperate to keep him. She saw in him the decency and security she wanted in a husband. Her own family life had been rough. Her father died an alcoholic and her mother committed suicide. Sally was already an unwed mother.

In spite of her friend Brad Eliot's advice that she'd only end up getting hurt, Sally decided to use a desperate single woman's oldest trick. She threw away her birth control pills and got pregnant by Snapper.

Meanwhile, Snapper was growing more and more fond of Chris. He broke off with Sally without knowing he would be the father of her child. With Snapper's encouragement, Chris was able to file charges against her attacker. Unfortunately, because of lack of evidence, he was not convicted. Determined all the more to stand by her side, Snapper proposed marriage. It took him a long time to get her to accept, but Chris finally did and they became engaged.

Sally was devastated when she found out about Snapper's engagement. She took a drug overdose, but Brad saved her life when he found her and rushed her to the hospital. When she was out and about again, Sally told her boss, Pierre Roulland that she was pregnant. He was in love with her and offered to marry her and give the baby his name. No one would have to know he was not the father.

Sally intended to tell Snapper that he had gotten her pregnant, hoping he would break his engagement to Chris and marry her instead. When Snapper's mom, Liz, found out, she did her best to change Sally's mind about interfering with Snapper's future. Liz's counseling worked. Sally accepted Pierre's proposal and they eloped a few days before Chris and Snapper's wedding.

Although Snapper overheard the conversation between Sally and his mother, Snapper had no intention of changing his plans. He and Chris had a lovely wedding. Even Chris' sister Lorie returned from Europe for the celebration. Except for the continuing jealousy and rivalry between Lorie and "preferred child" Leslie, it was a happy family occasion.

After an uneasy sexual start, Chris and Snapper worked through her problems and were happy together, living in a small apartment. When Chris became pregnant, however, Snapper's pleasure was tinged by fears that having another responsibility might hinder his medical career aspirations.

Lorie, found a way to ruin her sister Leslie's happiness when Leslie confided that she was in love with Brad. Undermining that relationship became Lorie's goal. She took a job at The Chronicle and worked closely with Brad, using the proximity to feed him misinformation about how Leslie felt about him. Lorie led Brad to the conclusion that music was more important than any man to Leslie and that to try to win her would only impede her career. Lorie also made Leslie believe that Brad was losing interest in her.

Meanwhile, Jill Foster was immersed in her rich surroundings. Kay was good to her new paid companion and trusted her, too. Jill was fairly understanding of Kay's drunken mood swings and realized the woman was very unhappy. She was rich, but her marriage was a sham.

Jill and Phillip Chancellor became closer through Kay, each helping the other deal with her alcoholic outbursts. The two fought their growing attraction for each other, but soon, their mutual attraction was undeniable. It didn't matter they were from different worlds. They fell in love but kept it a treasured secret.

When Brock Reynolds, Kay's son from a prior marriage, arrived at the Chancellor home, a new element was added to the mix. After living a fast lifestyle of drugs and sex, he wanted to help his mother find herself, and God. The attractive young man, who had once spent plenty of party time with Lorie Brooks in Paris, had given up many bad habits, but still had an eye for woman and Jill's good looks and comparatively innocent nature caught his interest. She, on the other hand, wanted only Phillip.

1975 Summary

On the night of a major piano concert in Detroit, Leslie Brooks received a devastating blow. Anxious for emotional support from the man whom she loved, Leslie sent word to Brad, inviting him to attend. But her letter was intercepted by Lorie, who quickly hatched a nasty scheme to steal the spotlight from her sister. When a disappointed Leslie phoned Brad after the concert to ask why he didn't show up, Lorie answered the phone. Lorie was at Brad's apartment, receiving assistance on a book she was writing. Cunningly, she led Leslie to believe that she and Brad were lovers. Later that night, Lorie seduced Brad and proposed marriage. Believing that Leslie wasn't interested in him, Brad married Lorie. When Leslie learned of the marriage she had a nervous breakdown and wandered aimlessly through Central Park, where all her identification was stolen. She was admitted to a mental hospital as "Jane Doe."

Pierre confirmed that his sister Marianne's suspicion was true--Sally was pregnant with another man's baby. In a case of tragic bad timing, Sally had finally learned to appreciate Pierre for his generous, unselfish nature and had fallen in love with him. But Pierre was killed by a robber at the restaurant. Sally wanted to leave town. However, Snapper urged her to stay until the baby was born. Eventually, Snapper confessed to Sally that he wanted to keep an eye on her because he feared that her unborn baby might have been injured by her recent suicide attempt, which occured when she found that Snapper had proposed to Chris.

Sally gave birth to a baby boy, Pierre Charles. Feeling sympathy for Sally's plight of raising a baby alone, Chris encouraged Snapper to spend time with Sally and her baby. However, Chris eventually realized that Snapper was the baby's father and Snapper confirmed Chris' fears. Distraught, Chris suffered a miscarriage. Soon after, she separated from Snapper and accepted a job as a social worker in Legal Aid working for Greg. Meanwhile, Sally moved to Chicago. With Sally gone, Chris and Snapper soon reconciled.

Greg overcame his feelings for Chris, and fell in love with Gwen Sherman. They planned to wed, but shortly before the ceremony, Greg discovered that Gwen was a prostitute. They postponed their marriage and Greg tried to help lead Gwen out of prostitution. But Gwen's pimp used physical force to pressure the terrified young woman into continuing to accept clients. Greg finally persuaded Gwen to press charges against her pimp. With prostitution behind her, Gwen experienced a spiritual awakening and devoted her life to God as a nun, leaving Greg once again a loser at love.

Snapper finally convinced his mother, Liz, to have his dad, Bill Foster, declared legally dead. Unknown to Liz and her children, Bill was alive in a town nearby. Meanwhile, Liz fell in love with Sam Powers and they became engaged. While Liz was looking forward to her new life with Sam, Bill resumed contact with the family, via a letter, after he was diagnosed with cancer. With the exception of Snapper, the entire Foster family embraced Bill's return. Liz even invited Bill to move back into the house. Although Bill realized that he still had feelings for Liz, he put her needs ahead of his own and encouraged Liz to continue with her plans to marry Sam. But Liz broke off her engagement to Sam because, as far as she was concerned, she was still a married woman. This turn of events delighted Jill and Greg, who hoped Liz and Bill actually would resume their marriage.

Kay realized that her son Brock was attracted to Jill and that he wanted to pursue her. Meanwhile, Phillip was anxious to divorce Kay, but Jill discouraged Phillip from taking any action until after Kay sought help for her drinking problem. Sensing a closeness between Jill and Phillip, Kay started keeping a closer eye on them. Soon after, she stumbled upon them kissing. Kay's feelings for Jill immediately turned hostile. Obsessed with finding out more information about the clandestine lovers, Kay arranged to have an elaborate bugging system installed in her home so that she could keep constant tabs on Phillip and Jill. When Phillip and Jill made plans to spend the night at a small, remote cabin to consummate their love, Kay followed them.

Shortly after, Jill discovered she was pregnant. Worried that she would lose Phillip to Jill, Kay offered her son a fortune to seduce Jill and marry her. Brock accepted the offer because he thought it would finally bring an end to the tension between Kay and Jill. Meanwhile, Jill accepted Brock's proposal so that her baby wouldn't be born illegitimate. Brock, a self-ordained minister, performed their wedding ceremony himself and they set up housekeeping in a small cabin. The only thing missing from their marriage was lovemaking. When Kay learned that Brock had actually married Jill, she was initially horrified. But her horror quickly turned to relief when Kay realized that Jill was no longer a threat to her own troubled marriage. Kay relished the second chance that she had been given to correct the problems in her marriage to Phillip.

Turning over a new leaf, Katherine joined Alcoholics Anonymous and laid off the booze. Meanwhile, Phillip was saddened to hear that Jill was pregnant because he assumed that the baby was Brock's child. But when Jill revealed to Phillip that he was the baby's real father, and went on to tell him her reasons for marrying Brock, Phillip decided to finally divorce Kay. He flew to Haiti, where he obtained a quickie divorce, and then rushed back to Genoa City so that he could marry Jill.

1976 Summary

The Brooks family desperately tried to locate Leslie, who was still tucked away as "Jane Doe" in the New York mental hospital. Lorie, however, wasn't shedding any tears for her missing sister. She was too busy making plans to marry Brad. At the New York mental hospital, Leslie's doctor accidentally ran across her photo in an old newspaper. The doctor phoned Stuart Brooks, who caught the next flight out of Genoa City. In New York, Stuart was delighted to discover that 'Jane Doe' was his daughter, Leslie.

With Leslie back in Genoa City, Brad discovered that Lorie had manipulated him into marrying her. He immediately broke off their engagement. Thanks to Brad's loving support, Leslie recovered completely from her ordeal and they made plans to marry. Leslie also arranged to buy Pierre's nightclub from Sally. She renamed it the Allegro and began performing regularly at the club.

Brad opened up to Leslie about his past life in Chicago. HeÕd been a neurosurgeon and had engaged in an extramarital affair with a nurse named Barbara Anderson. That affair had led to the birth of a son, who eventually died. At the time of his son's death, Brad was performing surgery on a patient. Overwhelmed by grief, Brad had given up his medical career, left Chicago and eventually ended up in Genoa City. Leslie agreed to keep Brad's secret and they married.

Katherine was devastated to discover that she and Phillip were no longer married. Putting the pieces together, Katherine realized that she had been drinking heavily on the night Phillip left for Haiti. In a drunken stupor she signed consent papers that opened the door for Phillip to divorce her.

Trying to maintain a calm exterior, a panicked Katherine met Phillip at the airport and offered him a ride home. But while they were driving, Katherine could no longer contain her false facade. She pleaded with Phillip to resume their marriage. In a heightened emotional state, Katherine lost control of the car and it careened off a cliff. They were rushed by ambulance to the hospital. Katherine sustained serious injuries and Phillip was in critical condition. Worried that she would lose Phillip, a tearful Jill kept a constant vigil at his bedside, praying for him to recover. Meanwhile, Bill Foster arranged for Phillip and Jill to be married at the hospital. After the ceremony, Jill quickly headed home to make plans for her life with Phillip. By the time Jill returned to the hospital later that evening, Phillip had died. After Phillip's burial, Jill's grief quickly turned to open hatred against Katherine, whom she held responsible for Phillip's death.

Now that Jill was Mrs. Phillip Chancellor, and had access to everything that belonged to her dead husband, including his money and home, she devised a scheme to punish Katherine. With little notice, Jill threw Katherine out of the Chancellor estate. Jill then arranged for her family to live with her in the plush home. Initially, Jill's family felt awkward, being taken care of by servants. Eventually, they began enjoying their comfortable new life. Meanwhile, Katherine was hell-bent on winning back her home. With that goal in mind, she devoted her time to proving that Jill and Phillip weren't legally married. In an ugly courtroom battle, Katherine testified that she had been coerced into signing the divorce papers while under the influence of alcohol. The judge ruled in Katherine's favor, making it possible for her to regain possession of Phillip's home. Jill, who was no longer recognized as Mrs. Phillip Chancellor, realized that her son would be born illegitimate. Although Katherine was the victor, it gnawed away at her that Jill was carrying Phillip's baby. She offered Jill a million dollars for legal custody of the unborn baby and Jill eventually accepted. But after giving birth, Jill had a change of heart and refused to turn her baby over to Katherine. Instead, she petitioned the court for part of Phillip's estate to go to her son. But the court rejected her petition.

Angered, Jill plotted revenge against Katherine. She led Katherine to believe that Phillip was still alive, and that she still suffered from a drinking problem. Although Katherine had actually gotten sober after Phillip's death, Jill deliberately left a bottle of booze where Katherine would find it. Distraught, Katherine began drinking again. When Liz realized what Jill was doing, she insisted that her daughter stop. Jill confessed her dirty scheme to Katherine, but it was too late. Katherine was already off the wagon.

Jennifer Brooks made plans to divorce Stuart and marry her former lover, Dr. Bruce Henderson. But Jennifer postponed her plans when Stuart suffered a heart attack. When Stuart recovered, Jennifer asked for the divorce and then flew to Chicago to be with Bruce. Soon after, Katherine discovered that she had breast cancer. After her mastectomy, Jennifer, abruptly broke off her relationship with Bruce, believing that no man could really love her because she was disfigured. Stuart, meanwhile, continued to love Jennifer. After dealing with her insecurities about the mastectomy, Jennifer reconciled with Stuart.

After Lorie was dumped by Brad, she fell for Jed Andrews, a married man. When that relationship ended, Lorie found herself attracted to Bruce's son, Mark. They fell in love and planned to marry. But shortly before the wedding, Jennifer revealed to Mark that he and Lorie were half brother and sister. Jennifer explained that Bruce, not Stuart, was Lorie's father. Mark quickly broke off the engagement, leaving Lorie confused. When Jennifer finally confessed the truth to Lorie, she lashed out in anger.

Brad discovered that he was going blind. Fearful that he would be a burden to Leslie, Brad deliberately began neglecting her so that she would fall out of love with him. With his eyesight nearly gone, Brad left Leslie and moved in with Lorie, who looked after him. Soon after, doctors found a cure for Brad's blindness. But by that time, irreparable damage had been done to Brad and Leslie's marriage. They divorced and Brad left town.

Bill and Liz Foster remarried. But Bill's cancer progressed quickly. The doctors doubted that he would live out the year. Bill was eventually hospitalized and kept alive by machines. He pleaded with Liz to pull the plug. Not wanting to see her husband suffer, Liz agreed to his wishes, but she was so traumatized by the incident that she suffered a stroke and forgot her actions. Meanwhile, Snapper was accused of killing his father. With Greg's help, Snapper was cleared of murder charges. Soon after, Jill fell for David Mallory, a young man who had been blind until a cornea transplant restored his vision. The eyes he received were from the deceased Bill Foster.

1977 Summary

Lance Prentiss found a summer home for his mother, Vanessa, in Genoa City. Vanessa wore a veil over the lower part of her face, supposedly to cover a horrific scar that she had received while rescuing Lance from a fire five years earlier. Embarrassed by her condition, Vanessa never ventured into public. When Lance found himself intrigued by Leslie Brooks, Vanessa feared that she would lose her son to another woman.

After Leslie's divorce from Brad, she fell into a deep depression. Leslie continued to perform piano concerts and was surprised that a wealthy admirer, Lance Prentiss, followed her from town to town, faithfully attending every concert. Lance revealed to Leslie that he loved her. In a desperate attempt to forget Brad, Leslie had an affair with Lance. But when she realized that her heart still belonged to Brad, Leslie broke off the affair. Soon after, Lance fell for Lorie, who was still nursing a broken heart after her break-up with Mark. After being romanced by Lance--who thoughtfully arranged intimate dinners for them in such cities as Chicago, New York and London--Lorie gave into his charms. Lorie, however, was confused by Lance's mysterious behavior whenever she visited his home. He specifically forbade her from entering one particular room in the house. She also couldn't understand why she was constantly running across scarves monogrammed with the initial "V."

Vanessa was none too thrilled by Lance's involvement with Lorie and quickly developed a strong dislike for both Lorie and Leslie, both of whom she continued to view as a potential threat.

Peggy Brooks fell for her college teacher, Jack Curtis, a married man. Jack had a wandering eye because his wife Joanne suffered from an eating disorder and was overweight. Peggy was stunned to discover that Jack was married. Furthermore, he refused to divorce Joanne because she was emotionally dependent on him and he feared how she might react if he suddenly dumped her for a younger, more attractive woman. Nevertheless, Peggy held out hope that Jack would eventually divorce Joanne. Peggy even tried to help the disturbed woman gain self-confidence. One evening, Peggy, who was still a virgin, was raped. Chris, who had also been raped several years earlier, believed that Peggy's attacker was Ron Becker, a married man who had previously been charged with rape. Chris knew about Ron because she had lent assistance to his family through her work at Legal Aid.

At Chris's urging, Peggy filed charges against Ron, even though she wasn't absolutely convinced that he had raped her. Thanks to a weak case, Ron was acquitted. But Ron's wife Nancy discovered that he was the rapist. The revelation traumatized her and she became schizophrenic. Soon after, Nancy was committed to a mental institution. Good-natured Chris, who was experiencing difficulty having children, decided to seek custody of Nancy's young daughter, Karen, even though Snapper feared that it would eventually lead to heartache for her. Ron agreed to give Chris and Snapper custody of Karen, believing that his wife would never recover from her mental illness. Ron also promised to stay out of their lives.

Nancy did recover and was released from the mental institution. She quickly set her sights on regaining custody of Karen. When Chris saw Nancy and Karen together, she realized that Karen still considered Nancy her mother and she reluctantly let the child go. Soon after, Nancy legally petitioned the court for custody of Karen and won. She then left town with her husband and daughter. Chris was so heartbroken that she separated from Snapper and also left town.

Eventually, Joann divorced Jack and became friends with Katherine Chancellor. The two women shared an immediate bond. Katherine enjoyed Joann's companionship and showed her appreciation by buying Joann gifts and a new wardrobe. Brock became alarmed by the attention that Katherine showered on Joann and warned that it was unhealthy.

Joann, who had finally gained self-confidence, lost weight . With a slimmer figure, she opened herself up to the possibility of meeting a new man, which disturbed Katherine. The two women planned a trip together to Hawaii, but just before they were about to leave, Brock confronted Joann with the truth about his mother's true feelings for her. Joann canceled the trip and distanced herself from Katherine.

At the same time, Peggy, who was still suffering from the aftermath of her rape, found it difficult to have sex with Jack. Eventually, she ended their relationship and moved back in with her parents. Jack found himself dazzled by Joann's new confidence and realized that he still loved her. When Jack proposed marriage again, Joann agreed to remarry him.

Jennifer died from cancer, leaving the Brooks' daughters without a mother, and Stuart without a wife. In time, Stuart turned to Liz Foster for companionship. Initially, the death of their respective spouses was a reason for bringing them together. But as Stuart got to know Liz better, he realized that he was developing romantic feelings for her.

Jill, who was once again financially broke, accepted a job as a manicurist at a barbershop. When Snapper overheard a customer proposition Jill, he insisted that she quit the job. Soon after, with Brock's help, Jill landed a job at a beauty salon managed by Derek Thurston. Jill quickly found herself attracted to Derek, who was handsome and charismatic. Ironically, Katherine Chancellor was also romantically interested in Derek.

Katherine used her money to try and buy Derek's affection. After she set him up in his own salon, Derek agreed to marry her. But there was a stipulation. The marriage would only last a year and, when it ended, he'd be sole owner of the salon.

Derek confided to Jill that he had no intention of marrying Katherine--he was only interested in her money. Katherine, however, was determined to make Derek her husband. One night, she deliberately got him drunk, and then arranged a quick wedding ceremony. The next day, Derek was flabbergasted to discover that Katherine was now his wife. When Derek told Katherine that he planned to get an annulment, the stinging rejection prompted her to try and commit suicide. Fortunately, Katherine was rescued by Derek and Brock. Soon after, two thugs arrived in Genoa City with a vendetta against Derek. They wanted revenge for a business deal that had gone bad. They intended to murder Derek, but Katherine saved his life by shielding his body with her own. Katherine was shot and, after being rushed to the hospital, doctors revealed that she was paralyzed. Derek promised to stay with Katherine until she was able to walk again. He then told Jill he had decided to honor his arrangement to be Katherine's husband for one year. Jill was mortified.
