Reading an article on Barry leaving "Loving," it says her Isabelle replaced Celeste Holm abruptly in July, 1992, and was written out in January, 1994. The move was storyline dictated. Agnes Nixon had only been there a short while when Barry's Isabelle was axed. She'd bring back Augusta Dabney's Isabelle in the summer of 1994 for the Cradle Foundation storyline.

I disagree with Barry's assessment of Viola. While she was a survivor, she was intended to be a character of a certain stature who would have followed certain rules. Viola would have married a man she hated to support her family, but I don't think she would have operated her own business. How would that have appeared?

Anyway, I think Barry won in the end. Didn't Viola open up a second-hand store or something along those lines with Josie Saxton. Or am I confusing my 1970s NBC soaps?

Since we are talking "Loving" and "For Richer, For Poorer," I wonder if Millee Taggert wrote for FR,FP or if Tom King consulted with Taggert in her 1992-1993 run. The Brewsters of Corinth are basically a carbon copy of the Brewsters of Point Claire. Both were mother-daughter duos who had been rich, but lost there money with the mothers encouraging their daughters to marry wealthy men. The mother figure was even absent in the early months and had heart problems.

I just found this thread and have been reading it and enjoying every minute. I watched Lovers and Friends / For Richer For Poorer at the beginning, I was in my early teens. I always remembered the "Connie" character and really enjoyed reading the old recaps, I remember Connie's fake suicide that almost worked and her waking up in "heaven" (?) wearing a white dress with everything around her in white and then hearing Bill's voice calling to her which made her decide to return to life. I don't recall ever seeing that actress in anything after the show, I thought she was good. It's funny how some things stick in your mind and other things don't. I remember all these details from a soap in the seventies but couldn't tell you what I had for dinner last night. Sorry I was late to this party but I sure enjoyed reading all this.

The actor playing Jason, wasn't he Iris' stepson, Ted?

Richard Backus came back to AW after FRFP was cancelled to play the second Ted Bancroft, a few years after Eric Roberts had first played Ted in 1977. Actually a number of the other actors from the cancelled show were taken on to play other characters on AW under Rauch and Lemay.

Backus went on to play Barry Ryan for a few years on RH, and later wrote for a number of soaps. I have a memory of him playing a minor character on ATWT, maybe one of the management consultant clients of Walsh or Montgomery, but it's not listed at imdb.

He played two characters on ATWT.  He was Dr. Russ Elliott, who found Betsy after her accident  (Meg Ryan)  and she resembled his late wife, Kate. Betsy ( now Lindsay Frost) after her bandages came off. He attempted to keep her from her life, but she made her way back to Oakdale.

His second character, Karl Eldredge, was a cousin to Scott Eldredge, Lisa's son  from her time on "Our Private World".   He was an attorney that eventually married Monika Lawrence, an M&A client, as well as one of James Stenbeck's  former lovers.

    • My comment has nothing to do with cast resentment, but does relate to the Finland location shoot: It may be a coincidence, but Jim Matthews died in Finland in 1982.  Hugh Marlowe's final episode was in April 1982, but the character probably didn't die untll May or June. (I'm unable to find the character's date of death, only the date of Marlowe's final episode). SInce Jim and Rachel had very little interaction after around 1975, it is unlikely Jim's death in Finland had any connection to Rachel's potential visit, but the choice to have Jim die in that location at that time is a head-scratcher.  I'm sure the writers sent Jim on an extended trip (and off-screen) because of Marlowe's illness.  But Finland seems like a strange choice considering the (then) recently cancelled location shoot.
    • I totally understand your sloths concern about it and I agree with you. Let’s hope the show plays it’s cards right.    Further comments about the last few episodes: - I liked that one of the attendees was filming the scene. That’s realistic. I wonder if the writers will follow up with that.  - Martin and Smitty trying to drag Leslie out was very heteronormative, so perfectly in line with them two as characters lol.    As for the future: it’s obvious the Duprees will come to accept Eva one way or another, but the rivalry with Kay should be here for the long term   On the topic of acting: the only bad actors I’m seeing are Ted and Derek. Tomas hasn’t proven to be either good or bad, so far, but he’s certainly mediocre and uncharismatic. He sucks the energy out of the scenes and I don’t see any couple of women ever vying for him.
    • I’m trying to think which actors VW were working with at the time, and none of them had been there for a while. Even like Mac and Ada didn’t have that big of a part in Rachel’s storyline.  And Jamie was involved with all that movie stuff.
    • Brooke did ads before ATWT too. That probably helped get her the job. After ATWT she seemed to branch more into hosting, along with ads.  I think I saw Kelley in an ad or two, but you're right she wasn't on as much.
    •   Thanks for sharing these. I wonder if Charles might have been in the running for Adam. I know Preacher was a bit of a bad boy at times on EON, but Neal seemed to be a step down, and Robert Lupone had played a similar part on AMC. Given the huge cast turnover at this point I wonder who thought they had been there long enough to go.  Laura Malone/Chris Rich would get a remote within the next year.
    • Interesting.  It seems to allude to that statement that Warren Burton made around that time about some AW actors getting special treatment.  I wonder who was resentful about not getting to go.
    • Good morning, boys!  I figured that it was time that our Gio was introduced into the hotness thread

    • Under all of Madonna's social media today there is this wave of negative, toxic, absurd comments by Lady Gaga fans telling her how Gaga surpassed her in concert in Copacabana. I mean... Who the hell cares? Why are these fan communities so freaking toxic??? I'm sure Madonna doesn't care... But still. Have some respect for M. Leave her social media alone. Go cheer Gaga and be happy. Why come and spew hate on M??? Crazy world.
    • FYI, again, Ruth/Letitia is not in either of these 2 episodes. So that concludes the 4 episodes I had from Nov. 1983. I don't have the October episodes.
    • Eddie has begun uploading the 1990 episodes. I'm so happy about that. I was mindfully taking a break till there's plenty of episodes I can binge watch when I feel like it. Now that 1989 is complete... I can't wait to press play on February 1989 and resume where I left off.
